Thanks for a fine melon from a friend
knows what we like.
Thanks. —We extend thanks to the
teftimnittpe .on invitations, to the Anim
al Picnic at Davisboro, for not leaving
ns off of their list of preferred friends.
Sorry we could not attend, but the
speaking in this place by Col. J. J.
Jiickinan prevented.
® Daring. —A short while ago there
was. a few men fishing in Rocky Comfort
Creek, above Clarks Mill, when an ali
► orator was discovered in the water, about
jfve feet long. Mr. Wiley Kitchens,
one of the party went into the water,
and held the dangerous biped
rfiitil the others, by repeated blows,
1 brought Ins life to an untimely stand
still. 4
ATTENTION GOOD TEMPLARS.
All members of Milledge Murphy
kuftge are earnestly requested to meet
Lodge Room in Bethany, at 8
BWbek -p. m., "on Saturday the 28th
[ inst.. Business of importance will be
brought before the Lodge. Remember
your obligation and be on hand.
B'exj. Carswell, AV. C. T.
Married. —At this place, on the
njglit of the 17th inst, at the residence
olthe brother-in-law, J. J. Keith, Miss.
• OpheliaSeekinger to Mr. Wm. Watkins,
hf the Rev. E. J. Burch.
- There was not a shadow on the young
nride’s face, and not a cloud on the
brow of the gallant groom, and while
assembled guests were jovial, and
■ileasant converse on appropriate themes
made the occasion one of festive joy ;
still in some laces could be discerneaa
i half sad, but not regretful expression;
and in their eyes a lingering, unsaid
that they did not wish to say to
of the youthful friends. How
natural!
Hh may the bow of promise span
'1 heir pathway through this hie ;
As they, march together hand in hand,
iue loving husoand, and the hopeful
wife.
Thrilling Incident. —Fred Oscar,
• a son of Judge Joua \Y. Brinson,
ris the name of tne youthful liero and he
has seen hut two summers. It happen
ed a lew days since in Jetferson county.
Curiosity, mischief, or something else
prompted the little fellow to lift a loose
> plank that covered the well, llepeeped,
lie saw—-uttered a scream and plunged
t'uil thirty feet down, through the water,
*To the bottom, which is rock, bumped
him on the forehead and stopped his
wild career. But he "fell to rise again,”
Ile bounced to the surface, shook the
water from his flaxen curls, and .made
„ for the pump tube. When his niivigfet
iVl parents reached the spot he was
'/holding hi3 grasp, bearing his lace
above tiie water and manfully calling
"help ! buddy, help ! In a few seconds
a little brother, 1 2 years old, sliding
down a rppe, reached him, placed him
snugly in a sugar box, and his father
drew him to .the top, with hardly a
lonise. Little Frail was soon as jolly
*s ever and the next morning was p til
ing at the same, plank for another frolic.
Improvements. —lt may be that the
■times are hard, that money is scarce,
that provisions are high and that the
crops are not of the most encouraging
character, still nevertheless, there are
Wj'provements going on in this place
to an extent not known at any time
since the war. Mr. J. 11. \Y iikins lias
nearly all the buildings on his hand
some lot repainted in tiie most approv
ed modern style, lie lias had erected
a large and commodious stable, with
extensive and roomy stalls. On this
stable is a fine piece of workmanship
in the way of a cilpulo. This is set otf
by a bronze horse iixed on a lance, so
arranged as to turn with the wind, thus
M-nab ling one to determine from what
direction it blows at any time. It is a
building that displays much taste and
lyrood workmanship.
Mr. Harlow, our jeweler and gun
smith has had his store repainted, which
adds much to its”appearance.
Dr. Powell is Having some stores or
a house built, rather, that will embrace
two store rooms under one roof. This
is being built on his lot, by tlie side of
a; very Handsome store room that lie had
put, up iastyeiir. On the whole Fine ills
Btuck is right in the business part of
ffciwn, and makes a radical improve
ment.
.Little & Cos. have nearly completed a
large Ware House, just back of his Gro
cery (store. It is a large, roomy house.
Tue lower part will be used in storing
bagging and ties, and heavy groceries;
the upper part will be divided into rooms
, for rent, as sleeping apartments, or for
r offices.'
Cain & Polhill have had erected in
rthe court-yard, opposite to Mrs. Kelly's
as neat a Law Office as you will find in
a week’s ride. Its cost was about $12,-
00 00. It is as cozy as it is conven
ient, and it is paid for which makes it
ihore attractive, still to the contempla
tive mind. lis occupants are men who
Brork for their clients, and are true,
men and unflinching advocates
jt of the law.
, The store occupied by Messrs. Cheney
(fc Fay has been recently repainted,
and presents anew appearance, much
enhanced by the style of coloring dis
played.
r Prof. Holcombe is having a house
erected near the Academy, on a lot he
from Judge Diehl, lie will
soon have it finished, and it will add
much to that part of town, and be
very convenient to his popular school.
Dr, Hunter has had his drug store en
larged and lengthened, and it adds
very much to its appearance, as" well as
the commodiousness of the store.
There are a great many other minor
going on, such as neat
Z yard railings, &c. The colored part of
■ our population arc putting up some
neat buildings for themselves near their I
churches, just below the more populous
part of town.
AVe are glad to see such improve
ments going on. It impresses l ; us with
the fact tfiat business is progressing,
and that enterprise is anything else but
on the while. AVe trufSt this may con- ;
tinue until Louisville will enlarge her j
borders on every side ; and why should I
it not be the case if the merchants will \
sell cheap and advertise freely in the j
News & Farmer, and if men every
where will work to build up the county,
tlieir town, and their paper.

NEW MEMBERS
INITIATED
Battle Oak Lodge 1. O. G. T’s..
met yesterday morning at 10 o'clock
and was largely represented by
its own membership, and we are proud
to be able to state that the members
from the several other Lodges of the
county were not sparce in their num
bers and were in full sympathy with the
Lodge here at this place. The order re
ceivod Col. Hickman at the hall in the
Court House, where he was welcomed
with warmth, and responded with equal
ardor in his rich tones, in a few remarks
indicative of high appreciation. The
march to the Baptist cimreh was con
dueled well, and the hearts of each' cine
throbbed with impulses of pure delight ,
and feelings deeper, but none the less
pure in origin or intent, actuated each
bosom, as the brass band regaled them
with charming and thrilling music, with
some of their best selections.
The procession made its way to the
church, when the lower seats were all.
filled, and tile gallery resorted to by
those who could not get Seats elsewhere.
In fact the audience was encouraging.
Col. Hickman was introduced by G.
li. Harrell, the AV. C. TANARUS., of Battle Oak
Lodge, to tiie audience, and proceeded
at once in his happy style to address
them on temperance. St anding there
in the space allotted for an alter, with
his magnificent dark eyes resting with
such a fearless, and yet so fascinating a
gaze upon his admiring heavers, he
looked the very personification of a
champion of truth, who knew his duty
and dared to do it. and with ins noble
form, and his irresistible eloquence
seemed capable of commanding the
wrapt attention of a Roma n Senate, or
•an educated assembly in the vast
halls at Athens. He commenced by
telling the people that he was not
there to make any personal thrusts;
-that the law's sanctioned liquor shops
and distilleries, and that the communi
ty in which it was sold, was to blame, if
not as much as the government a? least
in great degree ; and then he pictured in
scathing and unmerciful language—un
merciful to those who fell under the
distinctions he drew with so much truth,
how conflicting such conduct, and such
law was with the great divine rule of the
federal head, the supreme Ruler. 11 is
' appeals to Christians who were laboring
to do good at all times, and attempting
to build up the church, and to build up
society and their homes, and who were
losing sight and encouraging even the
dire manufacture and sale of liquor, was
not only potent but persuasive, lie
touched up oh our stagnant commerce,
and showed how our ships were rotting
at anchor because our vast resources in
grain were being distilled into alcohol,
and for what? To damn and destroy the
j best minds of the best citizens ove.i
| which our national banner unfurls its
stars and stripes of protective privi
! leges, and political rights—aye, more
than their minds, —their souls too;
consigning them a legacy of .eternal
death. llis speech was perhaps of an
hour's length, and when he pictured in
his own individual, burning, and irre
sistible eloquence, the different forms
of want and poverty that stalks every
where all over this broad land, there
were but few whose eyes were not brim
ing with tears.
Twenty names for application wore
taken, and twenty persons met in the
hail of Battle Oak Lodge pledging them
selves/or life to buttle against intem
perance. it was a sight calculated to
make angels weep witn gladness ; for
tuere were old men whoso locks were
frosted, and bright young faces fall of
rosy hope and budding promise, all
all turning their backs oil the hideous
malformation—destructive demon of
strong drink, and pledging eternal faith
to abstinence in tne brignt sparkling
chalice, beaming with the innocent full
ness of ’God's only beverage,’ their eyes
bright with a purpose that festooned
their future with anticipations of re
claimed manhood, and the restoration [
of shattered homes and shattered hearts.
It was aglftrious hour, :in impressive
scene, a fruitful harvest time,
and he meeting closed after much social
and innocent enjoyment, each feeling
better that’ the great temperance cham
pion had been with them, with the ex
pectation of hearing him again at night.
Speech at Nioiit—Large Attend
ance.—Col. Ilicknian spoke last night
to a largo audience and kept them spell
bound for a space of time not fully
known to us, we became so absorbed
iu his entrancing oratory* liis happy an
ecdotes, and his pathetic appeals.
Fourteen persons were added to tub
order, making in all, thirty-four who
joined the order yesterday.
A lino repast awaited the throng of
devoted Templars and cold waters and
the Chief, and such a social, festive
treat we have not sew before in a tong
time. Col. Hickman speaks at Ebpne
zer to-morrow and at 1 lud sonia on the
21st.
Bro. IHckman received a beautiful
cake from the Indies of Battle Oak
Lodge. TiurrV' •• Pution and tire
iug response will appear in our next.
