WASHING-DAY.
BY MRS- BARBAULD.
Come, Musa, and sing the dreadful Washing-Day.
Ye, who beneath the yoke of wedlock bend,
With bowed soul, full well ye ken the day
Which week, smooth sliding after week, brings on
Too soon;—for to thnt day nor peace belongs
Nor comfort;—ere the first gray streak of dawn,
The red-armed washers conic and chase repose.
Nor pleasant smile, nor quaint device of mirth.
E’er visited that day: the very eat,
From the wet kitchen seated and reeking hearth.
Visits th- parlor,—an unwnted gu“*t.
The silent breakfast-meal is soon d**.-.patched;
Uninterrnpted, save by anxious looks
Cast at the lowering skye, ifsky should lower
Front that evil, O preserves us, H. avi ns!
For should the skies (tour down, adieu to all
Remains of quiet: then expert to lt-*ar
Of sad disasters,—dirt and grave] stains
Hard to efface, and loaded lines at one?
Snapped short,—linen-horse hy dog thrown down
Anil all the p tty miseries of life.
Saints have been calm whilestretrh. dju; on ih? rack.
And Guathnozin smiled on burning coals;
But never yet did housewife notable
Greet with a smile a rainy washing-day.
But grant the welkin fair require not though
Who call’st thyself perchance th* muster there.
Or study swept, or nicely dusted coat,
Or usual ’tendance;—osk not, indiscreet,
Thy stockings mended, th >ugh th? yawning reals
Gape wide as Erebus; nor hope to find
Some snug recess impervious: shouldst though ir?
The customed garden walks, thine rye shall rrr-
The budding fragrance of thy tender shrubs,
AlyrlJ? or ros**, all cjashed beneath the wight
Of coars - checked apron,—with impatient haul
Twitched off .when showers impend: or crossing lint
Shall mar thy musings, as the wet cold she -t
Flaps in thy face about. Woe (to th? friend
Whose evil stars have urged hbn forth to claim
On such a day the hospitable rights!
Looks, blank tit best, and stinted courtesy,
53hali he receive. Vainly h * feeds hi* hopes
With dinner of roast cltick'-ns, savoury pie,
Or tart or pudding:—pudding he, nor tart
That day shall cat; nor, though th** husband try
?*Ier:ding what can’t be h-lp-d, to kindle mirth
For cheer deficient, shall his consort’s brow
Clear up pruptiious:—th ■ unluckly gu -st
In silence din.*s, and early slinks away

MILITARY SCENES.
FROM. TOM CRINGLk’s LOG.
Cut wo carried oa until we came to a lar^e
open space fronting a beautiful piece of water,
which 1 was told was the Alster. As I walk
ed through tlie narrow streets, I was struck with
the peculiarity of the gables of the tall houses
being all turned towards the thorough fare, and
with the stupendous size of the churches. Wo
halted for a moment, in the porch of one of them,
and my notions of decency were not a little out
raged, by seeing it filled with a squadron of dra
goons, the men being in the very act of cleaning
their horses. At length we came to the open
space on tlie Alster, a large parade, faced by a
street of splendid houses on the left hand, with
a row of trees between them, and the water on
the right. There were two regiments of foot bi-
vuoacking here, With their arms piled under th*:
trees, while the men were variously employed,
some on duty before the houses, others cleaning
their accoutrements, and others again playing
at all kinds of games. Presently we came to a
crowd of soldiers clustered round a particular
spot, some laughing, others cracking coarse jests,
but none at all in the least serious. We could
not get near enough to see distinctly what was
going on; but we afterwardssaw, when the crowd
had dispersed, three men in the dress oi' respecta
ble burghers, hanging from a low gibbet,—so
low in fact, that although ihcir heads were not
six inches from the beam, their feet were scarce
ly three from the ground. We soon arrived at
the door of a large mansion, fronting this pa
rade, where two sentries were walking back
wards and forwards before the door, while five
dragoon horses, linked together, stood in thf
middle of the street, with one soldier attending
them, but there was no other particular bustle, to
mark the head-quarters of the General coin-
mandiir*’. We advanced to the entrance the
sentries°carrying arrris, and were immediately
ushered into a targe saloon, the massive stair
winding up along tlie wails, with the usual heavy
wopden ba ustrade. We ascended to the first
floor, where- we were encountered by three
aides-de-camp, in full dross, leaning with tucir
backs against tlie hard-wood railing, laughing
and joking with each other, while two wall-
lamps rigiit opposite casta bright flashing light
on their splendid uniforms. They were all de-
■core with one order or another. We approach-

of them, a handsome young man, anparclit y
