of justice. ,
Chief justice Coke, whose memory will live
in after ages with undimiiusiicd lustre, was
thrown into prison by Janies I, for bis unceas
ing efforts to redress the grievances, and sup
port the rights and liberties of the pdpple; and
because, when he was called upon .by the King
to pronounce an innocent man guilty before he.
was tried, he replied, “he had already chosert
his motto, Lf.\ Qcitissima Cassis (the law {s'the
safest shield) and that he was only a Judge in a
court but not in a Chamber.”’ [Sec Coke’s bi
ography, Reece’s Cyclopedia.]
Chief justice Hale had the universal charac
ter of one of the ablest and most upright Judges
that ever adorned the English bench. And be
cause he rigidly maintained the dignity of the
laws and the rights and-liberties of the people,
he was insolently told by Cromwell, the usurp
er, “that he was totally .unlit Ibr a Judge,” which
drove him from his office, and Bradshaw was
put on the bench, who was ready to dip his bands
in blood at the bidding of- his master, who had
already involved the nation in a civ ii wario fa
cilitate his march to the thrown, [See Hale's
biography, Repce’s Cyclopedia.]
Chief Justice liolr was memorable among
the English Judges, for a thorough knowledge
of the laW, with an invincible firmness arid're-

Robespierre protatsed the people Fo'give them

no control but the control of his own party.—
The historian who has recorded the enormities
