extraordinary invention oi a young A-
mciicati, native oi' >,Tnv Ilamjcshire and
which is now being for the tirst time exhi
bited to the public, at the Fair of the A-
merican instrlute, ISiblo’3 Garden, de
serves more than a passing notice.-—
There are circuinstances connected with
it, which give it a peculiar, it" not roman
tic, interest i.i the history oi the arts in
unr eountrv. Ii' any were wanting a-
midst the multitude of extraordinary in
ventions which have, tor the last half
centurv, been recorded in the archieves
uf on/patent oiiicc, to illustrate and es
tablish the pre-eminent claims ot our
countrymen to aenius of a high order, it
would’be that which forms the particular
subject of our remarks,
Mr. Cochran’s lather \yas a lawyer,
and atlerw. vdr a merchant of eminence
in E: die Id, New Hampshire; and the son,
John W\ duster Cochran, was born there,
and has invented the species ot liie arms
in quesfhin, wai brought up to no parti
cular business. At the very early age,
however, ( ,f sixteen, iie discovered a
strong taste and passion lor mechanical
experiments, and was constantly occupi
ed" in the construction of machinery,
which his fa then approving of, unlike ma
ny other fathers, encouraged, and to fur
ther the wishes ol Ins sc.i,, ettpended sev
eral thousand dollars iu his behalf, in the
cost of the diifeient kinds cf apparatus
required.
When only eighteen, he ma.U the dis
covery m question, but did not perfect *t
until three years after. H~ then wept to
France and Eugjand, and exhibited his
model C’Uif.qii to'Louis Philippe an.I W ll-
liam the Vvdfde at 1‘aris in 1S33
'at, he was requested by the Turkish
Ambassador to explain it to the Turkish
Minister at Loudon, and accordingly went
tu Woolwich, and performed a series of
experiments before the latter personage,
which give so much satisfaction that lie
timed Mr. C. to visit the Sultan at Cou-
st./uinopfe, ap.d for that purpose provid
ed him wilh the most fluttering recom
mendations lo the Court of the Sublime
Porte. Mr. Cochran arrived at Constan
tinople, February 11th, 183*3, was receiv
ed with great d/imci-hin, ar.d introduced
to the Sultan by fife Grar/lYizet. His
'i'urkrsli Majesty was highly pleased with
the expeiTuki,:.;- h;ade wiili'die model
tuhl Mr. C. he was satisfied it would be
gen “rally adopted, and requested him to
cast twelve pounders ou the same princi
ple. He was provided with elegant a-
partments in Pern, raised to the dignity
of Master of Cannon, and furnished with :
as tnauv workmen as he required for die
accomplishment oi his tusk, ihe treat
ment in fact, which ha received, was c-
quivah'ut t<o that of i!,e rank of an am
bassador.
Mr. Cochran, ! f i,\ r 'ever, hutting there
was no good foundry qr njechannics, was
obliged to undertake the work with las
own liands; and though not brought up to
the business of making npichmery ol any
kind, by dint ol’ much labor and perse
verance made himself all the accessary
implements, the augers ami the wooden
apparatus for boring with horse power,
add the preparations required for procur
ing proper castings. Iiy good fortune he
succeeded entirely to Us wishes,. and
cgst and bored three cannon, two of opft
pound each, and the third a twelve jjouii-
,,/-/*, which last war finished in a style as
perfec t as he could have desired. On the
1.4th of September following, he proved
this lust piece to his entire satisfaction, in
the presence ot all ihe chief officers ot lue
Turkish government, who wero 4 c! jght' J
with its execution, and made a highly
fluttering report to the Sultan. He bred
it oil* in tlie presence of those officers to
their utter astonishment one hundred
times iu fifteen minutes. The Sultan
when lie beard of it would segreely bo :
lieve :t, and directed Mr. G. to [tCtipirij
the same experiments in his presence.—
The most extensive preparations wen;
accordingly made for Ibis important trial,
which \vaS to take place at 'Faracne, on
the European sideot the Bosphorus.
No less than throe thousand troops were
assembled ;g this seat. The Sultan at
the hour appointed came over tiom his
summer residence on the Asiatic ilioie
rowi-d in one of his splendid cniquc.*, and
preceded hy a long line of other boats ol
(lie same description- d’lie one which an
nounced the approach of the Sultan was
foot, announced tu him With fegling nf ex
ultation that could scarcely be repressed,
the wonderful success of the machine can-
nun, as they appropriately named it.—
The Sultan arrived at his tent, then sent
for the master of'the cannon, the title which
was given to Mr. Cochran, and after a
short conference} with him, in which Mr.
CL couycrsed chiefly in the Turkish lan
guage, which lie partially acquired, the
dultan renewing his expressions of kind
ness requested him to perform the experi
ment iu his presence. His majesty plac
ed himself within a few feet of the piece,
and Mr. Cochran commencing rather
sooner than was anticipated, the bultaa,
then with his back towards the cannon,
was at first somewhat startled at hear
ing the explosions suddenly succeeding
each other with such inconceivable rapi-
dity. The camion was fired one hun
dred times as before iu fifteen minutes,
during which the barrel acquired six hun
dred and Iiliy degrees of heat, wb die
revolving cylinder which contained the
charges was comparatively cool, bcingon-
ly two hundred and fifty degrees ol tem
perature. The Sultan’s cxclainauon ex
pressive of his delight was “God save
the Americans—if such boys as you are
(Mr. C. being then but twenty-cne) can
invent such things, what cau vour men
do!”
He then asked him for the bill of ex
penses, and being told by Mr. C. it was
left to his own pleasure, he went the next
day at the request of the Sultan to visit
him at his palace. The bag oi gold he
there received was truly an imperial pre-
suit, and enough to make his fortune.—
The amount would be scarcely believed
should we name it, and we do not feel
ourselves authorized to specify the sum
more distinctly, than rqay fie inferred
from what we have said.
Mr. Cochran soon after returned to A-
merica, with the understanding that he
should have a contract for supplying a
large number of cannon of the pattern
exhibited, whenever it could be agreea
ble for him to execute it.
These adventures of Mr. Cochran, yet
a youth, seeking iu a foreign laud that
patronage and encouragement which
were the proper measure and apprecia
tion justly due to his pre-eminent talents,
and which it is MmentaLic to Le obliged
to confess, his own countrymen would not
have bestowed upon I/un, recall the simi
lar examples ol \\ cst, Fulton, .Perkins
and others, and are calculated to reflect
discredit upon our national reputation, in
asmuch as Americans ought to be the first
to reward those inventive powers which
are so emphatically characteristic of, as
well as honorable to, the genius of our
people.
Dcacrif/lion of the Invention.—The in
vention of Mr. Cochran is adapted to
every species of fire arms. The articles
at present being exhibited by him at the
lair, are a model cannon, similar to that
experimented upon bclore the Turkish
Emperor, and anile complete, which we
shall now proceed to describe. He has
fired this rills twelve hundred times, five
hundred of which dischangos were fired
iu rapid succession, and without pro
ducing any expansion whatever iu the
chambers of the cylinder, or giving to it a
greater temperature than cue hundred de
grees of Fahrenheit. As many as two
thousand discharges are required before
the rifle will have been properly tested
after the rule of the war department. Mr.
Cochran is ready at any time to fulfil this
j complement ap4 g‘> beyond it. This
a'llm'.ioon he will fife it at Niblo’s Garden
five hundred limes iu succession, 'ihe
cylinder is a solid piece of iron, revolving
iii the plane of tiie boriel, and occupying
a position directly at the base of the barrel
which it is in close contact with. The
dimensions of the cylinder arc in diame
ter about four inches, and in thickness
soven-cigths of an inch. There are
this one nine open chambers for the
charges, which chambers are perforated
upon the periphery and converge lik
radii uqon the centre. The. cones on
which the percussion caps are placed
form another series of radii concentric and
within the circuit oi the chambers—a
soli:! metallic partition dividing all the
caps from each other. Each cone for the
cap communicates with its appropriate
chamber, and opens'in the centre of the
chamber, so that the whole charge of
powder is ignited at once, by which the
explosion of all the powder is made in
one half the time of ordinary rifles, and
therefore so much the more force given to
it, mill consequently a muni less charge
is required—the weight of the charge ba-
ing only one gru.) u.M <* ludj. As. each
chamber in iti revolution comes in tin
exact line with the tube of the barrel, ihe
cock strikes the percussion cap and the
explosion takes olace instantaneously.
The chambers, ad they successively come
■ nto a line with the barrel in the revolu
tions oi the cylinder, are momentarily ie-
tained linn in this position by the regu-
I'tthvr dof£ eo . icetcd with tbu cylinder
where it joins the breach, and the pin of
which dug catches in the small perfora
tions made at equal distances io' i‘-=>
ceplion. Nor cau the cock strike the pci-
cussion cap until it is in exact, position,
for if the chamber is not in its pn-pc.
iilace, the socket into which the hammer
fifty to the pound, and the force is suffi-. would come up to our ideas of excel-
cient to perforate eight boards each of one
inch thicknesa al the distance ot sixty
feet. The arrangement of the hail is
lence, that we have long since iesolv_
to acknowledge the inventor of a free-run,
rung, liquid ink oi a g >o J color, ;n> a pu* -
another beautiful and ingenious invention, lie benefactor, and worthy oi being ran.
ov/wuuiu; u.av* ui < — -
Their diameter is exactly fiited to the
chamber, but larger than the diameter of
the tube of the barrel hy an increment
equivalent to the depth of the spiral
creases on the inside of the tube. So that
no patch is required as in other rifles, for
it is forced into the tube uf the barrel and
exactly fitted to it hy becoming compress
ed into a cylindrical shape, and its sides
grooved by the creases of the barrel,
whereby it is kept firmly in its course and
moves steadily and with such precision
and so closely wedged that there is no
ivindage can get before the ball and give
an irregularity to its motion—a serious
inconvenience to which all other rifles are
liable. The aim of Mr. Cochran’s rifle
therefore is always deadly and sure. By
this arrangement there is another addi
tional power required, for you have the
entire force of the charge behind the. ball
until it leq.yes the muzzle, and in the same
proportion is the velocity augmented, and
therefore, a less charge required on this
account as well as on account of the man
ner in which the percussion cones com
municated with the chambers as already
stated. The creases of the barrel, as we
before said, keep the ball exactly m its
place throughout its course to the'muzzle,
whereas, the patch, always used in ordi
nary rifles, is constantly liable to tear,
which causes the irregularity of the ball’s
piotion and defeats the very object for
which rifles were iigended. The manner
in which the permission cones communi
cate with the middle of the chambers,
causes the powder to explode in one half
the time it would if the ignition took
place at the end cf a:;d posterior to the
chamber.
As an evidence of the accuracy and
effectiveness of this rifle, Mr* Cochran
related a bear hum, in y/hipb he look part,
a few days since, on the Moose Mountains,
in his native State of New Hampshire.—
He fired at the animal with the rifle now
at tlif, exhibition, and lodged nine balls in
liis brain"while lie evas under full way, at
the distance of some four or five rods
from him. The bear was brought to the
ground and the nine balls recognised and
identified from the others lodged near
them, by the grooves rqage in them by
the creases ol’ the tubes and by their
cvUi-.drical shape. His brother sports
men who had until then deemed them
selves in possession of good sporting
pieces, expressed themselves in raptures
at the superiority of their young country
man’s magic idle.
Another remarkable property in this
rifle is, that it has not tiie least iecoil
whatever, so that there is not the slight
est jar or irregularity iu the direction.
The rifle will be fired at >ibio’s five
huiid'-cd times i n succession this afternoon.
The patent right for the rifle and pistol
fortlic United States, has been sold by
Mr. Cochran to the trustees of a company
n this city for three hundred thousand
dollars. Richard &: Richardson, number
forty-one south street, are the agents for
the company, and have a large iiianuiac-
torv at Springfield, Massachusetts, and
are selling the rifle faster than they can
make them.
Colonel Bomford, at the head of the or
dinance department, United States army,
who was present at the* fair, was so much
pleased with Mr. Cochran’s rifle, that he
ordered him to make one and bring it to
Washington for experiment.
Cults New Pictures.—Five remarkable
paintings, by one of our most eminent ar
tists, Cole, are now exhibiting at Clinton
Hall. They are intended as a representa
tion of the growth, greatness, decay and
destruction of a community. The first
picture shadows forth the savage state: the
time of dav is sunrise, and the early light
shows a wild uncultivated scene on the
borders of a beautiful stream, where half
clad men are chasing the deer \vith dogs,
spears and bows—their rude cabins ap
pearing in the distance. The next picture
represents the pastoral state: ihe sun has
ascended hall way to the zenith, li.c
bunks of the fair river are divested of a
part of their wood?, shepherds are tend
ing their flocks, hud the smoke of sacrifice
isZ ismg from a temple which displays the
beginnings of architecture. The third
picture shows n fjoblg city under the mid
day sun, With ranks of spacious palaces
and massive bridges, adorned for a fcslal
occasion, and the streets are filled with
gorgeous pageants gud _ prqeessiqns. In
the next the city is besieged, the enemy
have forced its gates, the inhabitants are
given up to massacre and its dwellings to
plunder and fire. The last picture pre
sents a view of deserted ruins seen m the
evening light, fragments of temples, sin
gle cobiinns, and heaps of rubbish PM;"
crown with vegetation. The observer is
made to perceive that all these changes
occur on the same spot; the same rivers
and the same mountains are always m
sight, though somewhat varied in aspect
bv slight changes of position.
