Tne indignation of the noble lord was
well justified, as the setpiel will show.
it w is well known that the Indians
were employed to light agiinst the colo
nists, and that, th y pursued a most deso
lating and indiscriminate wariare. The
euaningof thesivage was united with
the h iirod t mv bore to those whom they
considered as intruders on their soil.
The events which we are about to re
cord, are matters of history, although not
generally known by ihe public mind; yet
they nevertheless seem ro evince the stern
devotion, the cool determination, and ihe
admirable skill with which some of the
acts of that time were achieved. It will
he evident, however, that nothing but the
most exalfd pitriotism, the most cairn
determinr ition to sacrifice himself to his
country’s cause, could have induced a
man to peril his lde in the manner that
the one whom we are about to mention
ventured his life.
In penetrating through the country to
wards the northern part ol this state, it
became very necessary lbr the colonists
t > li ive a const mt vigilance upon ihe I11-
di ms, who were every night prowling
about, an 1 as will be seen in the sequel,
with but too t ital an elleei. 1 lie army
st itione i upon what was then called the
rthem lines, were ever held in constant
requisition in consequence of the activity
frugal meal—the tatt o beat, and all, ex
cept the sentinels, the guard and the ulli-
cers retired to rest.
All the camp, except those on duty,
were in silent repose, and nought was
heard but the occasional challenge uf the
sentinel to the relief of the officer of die
night, “who comes there:"
The army seemed hushed in repose;
when suddenly the crack oi a rifle alarm
ed the whole camp. The alarm spread
to the tents oi’ the officers, and th” guard
was ordered out, to ascertain horn whence
die shot seemed to have been fired, an.’

there!—fatal certainly!—they found the,.burning, he dodged behind
dead body of the deceased sentinel!! ^
It seems that his post was situafejJ
ol t’neir sivtge fie, and the restless,
along the edge of a pie *e of wood,
there was an opening about half the dis
tance ol' his beat. In passing this open
ing he had been shot by the rifle oi’ (as it
will hereafter appear) an Indian chief.—
Another sentinel was placed upon the
post, and nothing further transpired that
night, although the soldier on duty had
s range misgivings as to the mysterious
shot that had lain his comrade low!
The next night the same post was
manned by a brave soldier, and just be
fore the relief (which came every’ two
hours) appeared, another crack of a rifle
was heard in the smne direction, -11111 110
on repairing to the spot.lo!—another senti
nel had fallen.
The soldiers raised the dead body of
this second victim of Indian artifice; and
one ot them was heard to mutter in a low
tone, “I’ll revenge the death of mv two
comrades on that savage, if there's cunn
ing in a Yankee!”
The honors of war were dispensed to
the dead soldiers, t>ut the fueling of re
venge had not led the breast of the soldier
who had just ma le the above determined
menace! Still his modesty deterred him
from making application to the command
ing officer, to obtain leave to put his
threat, into execution, and another sentinel
was put upon post at the fatal opening oi’
the wimd. All was stiil at 12 o’clock—
the sentinel paced to and fro cheerfully
and iu confidence of the ultimate success
of their country’s cause, when—crack!
went another rifle from out the fatal open
ing in the wood!
Rifle after rifle now spread the report,
and a double guard, upon repairing to the
spot, found another of their comrades
dead upon the field! He too was buried
in silence, tor the whole camp was full of
sorrow, and it would seem of indignation
too, that no soldier was to be found who
could escape the unerring rifle of the Li
lian.
Early, however, the next morning, a
soldier presented himself to the sergeant
at the door oi the m irquee of the corn
ua mdant, who desired io speak with him.
1'he sergeant reported this extraordinary
visitant, and he was admitted into tne
marquee. Having saluted his comm in 1-
mg officer, (winch was of course return
ed,^ he was requested to state his busi-
ness there, so early m the* morning.
“You will excuse me, sir,” said the
modest soldier, “nut 1 have understood
ui.it you cannot get a in ,n who will ven
ture to stand or wa.K, ais a sentinel, on
that piece ol ground at the opening oi' the
wood:”

“Granted—you shill have both these
requests granted. Wh.it next?”
“ VV iiy, i must be allowed to whistle or

“ Tim devil!—that’s contrary toall rules
of military discipline!”
“V erv true, bat what rules of military
discipline will apply to such a varmint as
that, who is night after night pipking off
some of our best and bravest soldiers
and some ol my best beloved companions
m arms. I’ll tell you what it is, captain,
1 have come here to oiler inysi It a sacri
fice upon the altar ol mv country—if you
like the sacrifice, take it!”
“I accept your generous offer and now
da as you please, and command unv thing
you want in the camp to complete vour
disguise—but how long do you m au to
stand?”
“Till I kill him!”
“Well, he generally prowls about, and
has shot our men between ten and two.”
“At ten, then I will take ray post, but
let no relief oiler to come any where near
mv post until day dawns, or it will break
up all my plan.”
“Very well. Act your pleasure; only,
if you are shot, don't bi une me.”
“Not a bit of fear of*that, sir, if you
only let me whistle and sing on my post.”
“Do any thing you like, i’ll trust you;
and if you kill him, I’ll m ike a lieutenant
of you.”
The sentinel made his salute and de
parted to make his arrangements for the
tanning encounter, which he was con
vinced without the exercise of much cun
ning, would be a fearful one, and await
ed the hour of tattoo with an air of con
scions superiority •ven over Indian cun
ning.
During the hour of tattoo and tea, he
was busily engaged in browning his rifle
and in procuring the gray dress or uni
form which his captain had promised him
The object, as the reader of course will
perceive, of browning his rifle and as
suming the gray uniform, was, that his
position might not so readily be discover-
effi^!! He had shown his own > :

The wary sentinel, resting upon one

and the crack of his rifle was an wared

The guard turned out, the drums la at

tachment of soldiers, to the post of the
supposed devoted sentinel. Tin re he
stood, and saw them come. He imd now-
reloaded his rifle. “Whocome then ?”
“Officer of the day and file of m. u,”
“Advance your sergeant and give tin

The sergeant advanced, and having
given the requisite signal, the officer of
the day began to question the sentinel.
