IXTCRISAL IMPROVEMENT.
I F tlii® 1® not ihe “age of wonder®*' H in at least the ehi
of enterprise and improvement. Tlie fc U W YORK
CANAL* connecting the Hudson with the great western
Lakes, lias only been completed ten fear® or little more,
when tlie growing resource® of that productive region ren
der® necessary an enlargement of ihe water communica
tion sufficient for Sieamhoais; and Kailrood® are already
being exec uted along the greater part of (lie line. That
work which was considered extravagant and visionary
wften projected by Clinton, is found insufficient lor tlie coun
try, before its gratitude ha® erected to his memory a suita
ble monument, ns a memorial of his genius aud public ser
vices.
We ace now an Ohio Canal, from that noble river to
Lake Erie, and coimmmicaiiim® proposed from Eike Mi
chigan to tlie majestic Mississippi. We have now before
us reports of convent ions of State* for a Railroad from the
Ohio to the Atlantic, commencing at Cincinnati, and end
ing at Charleston. Surveys are being made for a Railroad
from Nashville lo New Or lean*. There seems to he no
project too stupendous in its character, or magnificent irr
extent, for the genius, resources and enterprise ol*the coun
try. The history of no country in the world will furnish
such an example of improvement and prosperity.
We liave recently liecn made nctpiai'«ted with a work, for
Which without noise, puffing, or llounsh of trumpets, ihe
capita) has been subscribed in Boston, end which will as
suredly .anil certainly be executed, that lor magnitude of ob
ject and public utility, is not surpassed, pcrhn)»s not equalled,
, by any one of the great improvements Indore mentioned.—
The work to which we allude, i* the construction of a
K \ILKO \l>from BRUNSWICK HARBOUR,
on the coast of Georgia, to the Apalachk*oia River ur Bay,
in Florida. Brunswick is oscertained by a recent survey of
Col. Baldwin, (w ho is admitted to be one of the first engi
neers in the United State*) to be the best harbour on our
Southern Atlantic sea coast, and is perhaps the healthiest
place in the Southern States. This important hay ami har
bour has been neglected heretofore, hut having liillen into
better bunds, has been found to jusliSy tlie report of the
British colonial government sixty years ago. recommending
it as a Dock Yard and Naval Depot for the South Atlantic
colonies. A Canal is to he constructed to divert the trade
of the A llama ha into ill’s harbour, which oj*»ns into a large
inland sound, navigable fiir Steamboats to Charleston and
Savannah on the north, and to $t. Johns in Florida, on the
south. A uavsi Commission is now on its way, under the
authority of congress, to determine upon a site for a South
Atlantic Navy yard, which, looking to the facts diM'loscd in
Col. Baldwin’s report, must !>c at Brunswick The object
of this company, composed of our moat respectable anti re
sponsible capitalist*, is to open this canal, ami make a Rail
road to tho Apalachicola river in Florida, about two hun
dred miles. This Railroad must take nearly the whole
travel from the northern and eastern State*, a* well as of
ihc AmiiU Atlantic, to New Orleans. It wilt produce a re
volution in the trade and intercommunication of our coun
try—will bring opposite extremes together, and insure a
ready and comfortable passage from Boston lo New Or
leans in seven days. Such i* the outline of a scheme on
the eve of execution, with that noiseless, caution*, and de
ckled character of our ftopiilafon.
The author of this splendid ns well as most useful project,
is Thoms Butler King, of Georgia, a gentleman, who, hy his
amiable manners and great intelligence, lias made a most fa
vourable impression upon all who have the pleasure lo know
him, and if his valuable services to his State are appreciated
in Georgia, as such nr* estimated here, he deserves, and w ill
ret eive its highest honors.— Host on Atlas. If—13
