they in truth div< sled of foolish prejudices, they might, per-

physician's. Tiny would llicit hnrnthat it did differ, and
very vviit< ly, and with most happy results, loo.
If they pursued their enquiries still further, they would

A GOOD VEGETABLE MEDICINE is just the re
verse of all this. For hnndrrds of years heflire that scourge
of mankind, “Merrurv,” was employed in the healing art,
Physicians used nothing hut simple herbs. Even the Bible
recommend as ihe "skilful physician” he who prpparcth his

Witness Eeclesiaslieu.'t. Chap XXIII.
V. 3. Tht skilful physician shall lift up his head; and in
the sight of the p rent no n he shall be in admiration.

MOFFAT'S VEGETABLE LIFE MEDICINES pos-
Besses qualities of he most mild and beneficial nature.—
They are composed of orlieles the most ami putrescent,

produced cither from cold, obstruction, bad air, swampy nad
damp situations, or pulric miasma, whether malignant or
epidemic, or hy other causes, these medicines are certain in
Iheir operation or effect*. They are possessed of peculiar
qualities, which not only < i|iel all disease, hut at the same
lime restore and invigorate the system. When first taken
into the stomach, they ivunediately diffuse themselves like
a vapor through every pore, producing t ff els at once de

begins to grow dim, the ein illation languid, and the facili

From the l-enisville Journal, Oct. 13
At the sol vital ion of an old friend, we publish vviih pleas-
nre. in this day’s paper, a letter from Mr O. L. Smith, of
jhe firm of Smith, Kiddle St Co. of tliis city, to Mr. Moffat,
*if the city ot New York, proprietor of the "Life Fills and
Finn nir Fiitti rs.” In litis letter, Mr. Smith gives an account
of his sufferings from a severe ntlack of chronic rlieuma-
■tism, under w hieli lie labored fir more than three years,
ant! of his speed if cure by the use of the aforesaid medicines
A certificate, coming frum so respectable » sourer, cannot
fail lo have its weight in this community. If ibis medicine
is found by experience to effect so immediate a cure of a
complaint so painful and distressing, it would he highly val
uable to persons engaged in navigating steamboats on our
Wokleru rivets. From their constant exposure to the in-
,rlcmaney of ttie-wt alher.antl from the rapidity of their tran-
ssition from a told lo nsarm t liinale.and )'tun a warm toa
cold one, they ore peculiarly liable to i her malic attacks. To
them this medicine may prove an invaiuahle remedy—one
•which they can always keep on hand for Use as occasion
imay require.
It it t:n ; d that a single dose of three pills, or two doses nt
most, will relieve a common cold. The proprietor of the
Medicine, through a friend, was so kind, a few weeks ago,
ne to send us a l oti o of the hitters, and a box of the pills;
and vvle n nffl-eled with a severe cold, we have derived ap
parently grt at lit tit-fit from their use. We do not believe
that any medicine ever has been or will he discovered, which
in serious complaints, will supercede the necessity of the
pin sieian's serv ices, yet we have si rongi reason to hope that
the medicine, of which we have been speaking, will prove
of great u.iiity lo the community.
LETTER FROM O. L. SMITH.
Louisville, Get. 1st., 1337.
Mr. John Moffat.— Upwards of four years ago i was at
tacked with a violent chronic then mill ism, by which I was
much reduced and crippled. I applitd to the IipsI physicians,
hut without receiving any relief. I have passrd two months
in Louisiana, and one in the West Indies, being advised that
She climate would effect mv cure.—During one summer I
■visited the Hot Springs in Virginia, but nil fniletl to relieve
me. Some time in July 1 was advised hy a friend, recently
fri m New York, to try the effect of your Life Fills and Phc-
nix /Jitters 1 began Intake them reluctantly, and without
having any faith in their efficacy whatever, and was truly
astonish'd to find that I grew better every day. I continued
to use lie in fur about twenty days, in which lime the use
of iny limb* were completely restored, anti I now consider
myself in us good health as I ever before enjoyed. 1 feel it
■a duty which I owe to you cm! the publicly generally, lo
give you ibis cert-'Scale of the effects of your valuable med
icines on m", in a case which was believed both hy my
self and my ti tends, to he almost incurable. I will say in
-additionto this, that I have recommended your medicines
to several of my acquaintances, who are u.-irig them with
•every appearance of receiving the same btnefitand relief.

LETTER FROM SINGLETON WILSON.
Shelby County, Kentucky, Nov. 5, 1838.
Mr. John Moffat.—Sir: In the summer of 1825, I was at-
'tat ked vv ilh a most violent enfant mis eruption; my face,
•hands, arms, ankles and feet suffered mod, though other |M>r-
tions of my body were diseased. As tbe appearance of this
•eruption strongly resembled an aggravated ease of poisoned
skin from a vine in tliis ouunlry railed Poison Oak, i ap-
f ilied the remedies usually rpsorted to for that complaint; they
lowcver produced no salutary effect, anti the disease con
tinued to rage untilthe approach of cold weather, when it
-gradually commenced dying and ultimately disappeared.
Every summer since then, this discose lias assailed me with
unmitigated violence; my face has often been so inflamed
that 1 was unable to see, ami other portions of mv body
presenietl the highest and most painful appearances of cuta
neous inflammation. I have been oflrn fop weeks unable to
leave my horn e. and during the whole of the hot seasons I
suffered unmitigated pain. Perhaps few have suffered for
the past ten years more titan I have, and you may there
fore imagine that 1 have not failed to use every remedv that
has been recommended to me from a respeclaldo source.—
finch in truth is the fact, 1 have been treated over and over
again for this disease by tbe most learned physicians in this
country, and all without effect, save a momentary rr spite,
from copious bleeding, to w hit'll I have often bt en com yelled
to re soor wear out for tbe want of sleep; rny genera!
health, in consequence of this disease, has been greatly in
jured, ami! am inclined to beilievo that a few more attacks
of it would have brought rue to mv grave.
1 am however, sir, happy to mCirm you, that in July last
your medicine v.as recommended to me by your friend Ma
jor Whcatly, of Louisville. J soon found myself much im
proved, anil in less than n month every vestige of the dis
ease was removed; my general health is also greatly- bene-
fitied. It would mu In? amiss, perhaps, to mention that,
although subject to Rheumatism, I have been entirely free
from it since I used your Life Fills qnd Phoenix Bitters.
I nrlieve my sell cured, and for a man of my age, being in my
66ih year, 1 aiu in good Inaltb.
The next summer 1 will test the efficacy of yoitr medi
cines further in my case and then you shulI hear from rne
again.

LETTER FROM J. B. BLAND. .
Louisville, Nov. 1st, 1837.
Mr. John Mo fiat—Sir: An infant son of mine, in Jnlv
last, w as afflicted w it li w hat is commonly called a bowel
complaint, termed by the Faculty, Cholera Infant am, (a dis
ease dreadfully fatal to children in the western country.;
I tried several remedies without effect. Hearing that some
ol your Life Pills were to he had in Ibis city, I procured a
box, and gave m v child a single pill in solution; it operated
well, and the child commenced eating with a tolerable ap.
petite the next evening, and speedily got well, and is now
ill perfect health Another son aged t ight years look a se
vere cold which caused him to have a high fever through
the day. I gave him two pills at night, they operated well
the next way; the fever left him, and he has ever since been
in good health. I have a servant woman aged about forty
eight years, who had been ill for many months, nnd was
greatly reduced and emaciated, so much to that I did not
expect she could ever recover her health. I cannot snv cer
tainly vvlut ihe disease was with w hich she was afflicted,
iror can t well describe the symptoms. I determined lo try
the t lh cl ol tlie P:IL and hitters both on her, merely as an
experiment, believing I hoy woultl do her no harm if they
should do no good. I gave her the Pills and Bitters agree
able to your directions, and soon found that she wes rapidly
recovering. She is now well and attend to her business as
Usual. The traits of your medicines In my family has caused
me lo speak of them in high terms of commendation; some
of my friends are rather skeptical upon this subject; I w ill
mil undertake to say certainly that your medicines cured
these three eases of illness in my family, hut 1 will say, that
in each ease the patients began lo mend almost immediately
after taking your Life Pills anti Phenix Bitters.
