G0HG TO C OI RT.
BY ALICE CARY.
The farm-lad quaried from the mow
The golden bundles, hastily,
And, giving oxen, colt and cow
Their separate portions, he was free.
Then, emptying all the sweet delight
Of his young heart into his eyes.
As if he might not go that night.
He lingered, looking at the skies.
The evening’s silver plow had gone
Through twilight’s bank of yellow haze,
And turned two little stars thereon—
Still artfully he staid to praise
The hedge-row’s bloom—the trickling run,
Tbe crooked lane, and valley low—
Each pleasant walk, indeed, save one,
And that the way he meant to go!
In truth, for nature’s simple shows
He had no thoughts that night, to spare,
In vain to please liis eyes, the rose
Climbed redly out upon the air.
The bean-flower, in her white attire
Displayed in vain her modest charms,
And apple-blossoms, all on tire,
Fell uninvited in bis arms.
When Annie raked the summer bay
Last year, a little thorn be drew
Out of her white hand, such a way,
It pierced his heart all through and through
l’oor farmer-lad! could ho that night
Have seen how fortune's leaves were writ,
His eyes had emptied all their light
Back to his heart, and broken it.
Hr. BUfkin's Baby.
That first baby was a great institution.
As soon as he came into this “breathing
world,” as the late W. Shakespear has it,
he took command in our house. He was
the balance wheel that regulated every
thing. He regulated the temperature, he
regulated the food, lie regulated the ser
vants, lie regulated me. For the first six
months of that precious existence he had
me up on an average six times a night.
“Mr. Blifkins, says my wife, “bring that
light here, do ; the baby looks strangely ;
I’m so afraid it will have a fit!” Of
course the lamp was brought, and of
the baby lay sucking liis fist like a
little witch bear; that he was. “Mr.
Blifkins,” said my wife, “I think I feel
a draught of air; 1 wish you would get
up and see if the window is not open a
little, because the baby might get sick.”
Nothing was the matter with the window,
as I knew very well. “Mr. Blifkins,”
says my wife, just as I was going to sleep
again, “that lamp, as you have placed it,
shines directly in baby’s eyes—strange
that you have no more consideration.” I
arranged the light and went to bed again.
Just as I was dropping to sleep again,
“Mr. Blifkins,” said my wife, “did you

man, who has arrived at the lionor of a live
baby of bis own, sleep, when be don’t
know that tbe dear creature will live till
morning!” I remained silent, and after a
while, deemed that Mrs. Blifkins bad gone
to sleep, I stretched my limbs for repose.
How long I slept I don’t know, but I was
awakened by a furious job in tbe forehead
by some sharp instrument. I started up,
and Mrs. Blifkins was sitting up in the
bed adjusting some portion of the baby’s
dress. She had, in a state of semi-somno
lence, mistaken my head for the pillow,
which she customarily used for a nocturnal
pincusliian. I protested against such treat
ment in somewhat round terms, pointing
to several perforations in my forehead.
She told mo that 1 should willingly bear
such trilling things for the sake of the
baby. I insisted upon it that I didn’t
think my duty as a parent to that young
immortal required the surrender of my
forehead as a pincushion. This was one
of the many nights passed in this way.
The truth was, that baby was what every
other man’s first baby is, an autocrat-
absolute and unlimited. Such was the
story of Blifkins as related it to us, the
other day. It is a little exaggerated
picture of almost every man’s experience.

\fgro Mechanics.
Tho Columbus Jbnepuirer quotes ap
provingly an article ou this subject from
the Canton, Miss. Citizen, protesting
against teaching the mechanic trades to
negroes, and insisting that laws should be
enacted to prevent it in future. The
Montgomery Mail endorses the Citizen’s
reasoning and recommendation. Gov.
Adams, in his message to the legislature of
S. C. assumed the position that free labor
and slave labor was necessarily antagonis
tic to each other. If his doctrine is cor
rect, then, with the Enquirer, as a matter
of right as well as of policy, “Slavehold
ers ought to reflect upon the policy of
continuing a system which may prejudice
any class of white laborers at the South
against its peculiar institution, and ought
readily to concur in the prohibition of the
practice in the future;” for one class of
persons in a community have no moral
right to do that which necessarily arrays
another portion—an entire and large class
—in antagonism to the institution of the
State. Some legal rights should be yield
ed for social good. This was required of
the printer when he was prohibited from
teaching liis slave to set type. If making
mechanics of negroes necessarily makes
this class of community antagonistic to
the institution, why not guard bylaw
against it.
If the position of Gov. Adams is cor
rect, to make mechanics of slave both de
grades and demoralizes the white mechan
ic: Is there any moral warrant for this?
Xo one questions any man’s legal right in
this matter. It is now a question of moral
reciprocity—of moral obligation; of doing
unto others as we would be done by.
"We believe the following paragraphs
from the Citizen, express the views enter
tained by many good citizens, and are en
titled to the calm consideration of those
whose will is law in this matter.
The policy of teaching negroes the va
rious trades, instead of putting them on
the plantations, where they belong, tends
to make the rich richer, and the poor poor
er, or by bringing slave labor into eompe-
tion with white labor, and thus arraying
capital against labor, (for the negro is capi
tal) and this will produce a spirit of antag
onism between the rich and the poor.—
Such a policy, in our opinion, tends to ele
vate the negro at the expense of the poor
white man; and makes the poor mechanic
at the South the enemy of the negro and
of the institution of slavery.
We are quite sure, if the rich man’s nc*
