The Child's Evening Prayer, ‘•Who, that has lived through years of careless gayety or sorrow, or crime, has forgotten that little prayer so often murmured at the mother’s knees: Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep; If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.” The origin of this stanza it is difficult to trace.—. It appeared in the New England Primer” more than four score years ago. and was probably then as many years older although some have ascribed it to Dr. Watts. Mr. Tower, in his ‘‘Pictorial Reader,” mentions as a fact related to J. Q. Ad- ams. that during his long life, he never retired to bed without repeating the above prayer of his childhood, which, learned from his mother’s lips, he had been early taught to lisp. The prevailing sentiment, so sublimely simple, however child ishly expressed, so effected some poet of latter days as to originate one of the most touching little poems in our language. The name of the author is not now remembered; but the beautiful produc tion ought to be immortalized by general repub- lication every year. The dreamy night draws nigh; Soft airs delicious breathe of mingled flowers, And on tlie wings of slumber creep the hours; The moon is high— See yonder tiny cot, The lattice decked with vines—a tremulous ray Steals out to where the silver moonbeams lap, Yet pales them not! Within, two holy eyes, Two little hands clasped softly, and a brow Where thought sits busy, weaving garlands now Of joys and sights For the swift coming years! The farmer’s toil, the farmers fare, and best Of earthly luxuries the farmer’s rest;— But hark! a soft voice steals upon his heart— “Now say your prayer, my son before we part.” And clasping his great hands—a child once more, Upon his breast, forgetting life’s long wat— Thus hear him pray:— “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep; If I shoul die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.” Providence.—“Wiiat a strange Providence, that a mother should be taken in the midst of life from her children!” Was It Providence? No? Provi dence had assigned her three score years and ten; a term long enough to rear her children, and to see her children’s children; but she did not obey the laws on which life depends, and, of course, she lost it. A father, too is cut off in the midst of bis days. He is a useful and distinguished citizen, and eminent in his prolcssion. A general buzz arises on ev ry side. “What a strikiug Providence!” This man has been iu the habit of studying half of the night—of passing his days iu his office or in the courts; of eating luxurious dinners and drink ing various kinds of wine. He has every day violated the laws on which healtn depends. Did Providence cut him off/ The evil rarely ends hers. The diseases of the father are often transmitted, and a feeble mother rarely leaves behind her vigor ous children. It has been customary in some of our dries for young ladies to walk in thin shoes and delicate stockings in mid-winter. A bsaltby blooming young girl thus dressed iu violation of heaven's laws, paid the penalty—a checked circu lation, cold, fever, and death. “What a sad Prcvi- dence!” exclaimed her triends. Was it Provi dence; or her own folly? Look at the mass of diseases that are incurred by intemperance in eating and drinking, in study or business, by neg lect of exercise, cleanliness, and pure air; by indiscreet dressing, tight lacing, <&c.; and ail it quietly imputed to Providence. Is there not impiety as well as ignorance in this? Were the physical laws strictly observed, from generation to gereration, there would he an end to the frightfnl diseases that cut life short, and of the long list of maladies that make life a torment or a trial. It is the opionion of those who best understand the pnysical system, that this wonderful machine, the body, this “goodly temple,” would gradually decay, aud men would die as if failing asleep.-— Miss Sedgwick.
