POINTS ON THE SUN.
The snn is 32 ,000 times as largo
as this earth.
The snn is 400 times as far as
the wood.
A lady who weighs 10) pounds
here wonlj weigh 2,700 pounds if
on the surface of the sun.
The beat given off by the sun
would melt 287,000 cubic miles of
ice every second.
The diameter of the earth bears
the same relation to its distance
from the sun as the breadth of a
hair 125 feet.
A railroad train, traveling with
out stops at the rate of forty miles
an hour, would get to the sun in
263 years.
The nn is beleived to become
some 200 feet smaller every year.
The contraction would be suffic
ient to generate the enormous
inanity of heat which it radiates.
Another theory is that comets
and meteoric matter falling into
the sun may he its aliment offset
the tremendous loss which com
bustion certaiulv involves,
It would reqnre the combustion
of thirty feet of coal over the en
tire surface of the suu every sec
ond to generate the same heat.
The stars are supposed to aver
age larger than onr sun and to
have planetary systoms like his.
The nearest star is 250,000
times as far off as our sun.
It takes light eight minutes to
come from the sun. but it most
have required 50.000 years to
come from the farthest visible
stars.
Win n eleven year storms on the
sun occur, the magnetic needle on
the earth is varible and some
times considerably deflected.
The earth is flying round the
the rate of 1,000 mi'es a sun at
minute.
The sun and all the stars are
moving through space uccompain
ed bv their planetary systems, at
rates varying from 20 to 200 miles
a second.
Some of the sun spots (craters)
are 100 thousands miles in diame
ter, and one of them would easily
swallow up the whole of the plan
ets Jupiter himself making only a
monthful.
Meedler’s curious and brilliant
■peculation is that the star A ley
one is the central sun of our uni
verse, and that our suu and the
visible stars are swinging around
it iu orbit measured by millions of
year*.
TRUST,
Life would be impracticable un
less it were tho primary rule to be
liove what iu told ns. There is
n< A a single relation in adult life in
which we are not compelled to
depend upon the word of a hus
band a wife, a friend, an agent.
We 1 relieve certain things repre
senting them—their horn r, their
chastity,their affection, their faith
fubness. To what kind of condition
would life be reduced if we apply
to these mutters ‘the universal du
ty of questioning all that we be
lieve?’ In some, at all events, of
these relations, it may be observ
ed, it is in nature of the case im
posihle that we should have suffic
ient evidence’ for our belief. It
is an unquestionable fact that ma
ny a man who has been trusted,
and who has for years borne an
uccxceptional character, has prov
ed faithless; and it is quite impos
sible I can be sure upon grounds
of evidence respecting any partic
ular man that ne is in capable of
this baseness. But the first con
dition of a genuine and honorable
friendship is to believe this, to re
fuse to eutertain a doubt of it, and
if need be to uphold a friend’s
honor until he is absolutely prov
ed dishonorable. With respect to
t fist exercised in commercial rela
ticfhs, it might perhaps be said
that it is a mere application
of the principle of probabilites.
Asa matter of experience,
if customers are trusted, the ma
jority of them will fulfil their en
gagements. It may be doubted
whether tradesmen really do act
in practice on this mere calcula
tion of probabilities; at all events
the principle ikies not apply to the
other relations of life just referred
to. It would be an insult to a friend
to say you trusted aud loved him,
because you thought k more prob
able he was true than that he was
false. He expects from you, as the
primary oondition of true friend
ship, that you believe firmly con
cerning him that of which you
eanuot possibly have certain evi
dence.
Said old Mrs. Philanthropy the
other day, accosting a precoeious
urchin iu the street with a war
drobe remarkably for its veutiia
ting advantages, ‘Hubby, why
don’t you go heme aud have your
mother sew up that awful hole in
your trowsers?’ ‘O, you git eout,
old 'omhii,' was the respectful re-
Ilr, ‘our folks economizing, and u
ole will last longer thau a patch
auy day.' The old lady's hose**
sympathy was wasted, while
youngster beat a tetreat around
the corner, displaying a flag of
trace in the tear. •
Hippolyte Lucas, a serious wri
j ter in whom criticism finds no
cause of attack but a iong nose,
was playing chess tho other day
j with Louis Lesnoyers, at a
! moment when he was suffering
from a cold in the head.
‘Blow vour nose, my dear fel
low,' said Lesnoyers, with consid
erable good humor, as he saw him
losing.
‘Blow it yourself,’ said Lucas,'
‘it’s nearer yon than me.’
The courtship of the last but
one Earl of Pomfret, and the heir
i ess he afterwards married was
' conducted after the following fash
ion:
Do you like buttered toast?’
‘Yes.’
Buttered on both sides?’
•Yes,’
‘Bo do I; don’t yon think we
had better be married?’
‘Yes.’
Tne lady’s fourth ‘yes’ was pro
nounced before the altar.
