THE STATES AND UNION.
The Cheapest Paper in the South*
ONLY ONE DOLLAR TER ANNUM.
FOR
TIIE WEEKLY EDITION.
On the first, day of October next, we will com
mence the publication of our paper, on .new,
large, and legible type, under the title of
TIIE STATES AND UNION
“The Union” is a name that is endeared to the
editor of The States by many agreeable recollec
tions. He brought it with him to Washington
from Nashville, where it was the title of the home
Tgan of General Jackson and Mr. Polk, (with
which he was editorially associated,) and mainly
adopted, at his instance, by the lamented Mr.
Ritchie, the then Nestor of the American press,
as an appropriate name for the Democratic jour
nal which they jointly established, and the first,
number of which was issued on Jefferson’s birth
day in 1845. It is a name that was beloved by
such sterling patriots and Democrats as General
Jackson, James lv. Polk, Mr. Ritchie, General
Armstrong, and their contemporaries, and a name
graven on the hearts of the Democratic party.
When the journal which it represented found
that its interests would be benefited by easting
it aside and substituting another, we then resolved
that, as it had been thus repudiated, we would
take it up, and place it at the head of our own
columns, as soon as a suitable period arrived.
The States and Union will be conducted with
an exclusive regard to the principles of the State-
Rights Democracy, will be independent of sac
lions, and unbiased by partial interests. We may
add, that several of the ablest contributors to the
Union during the time we were connected with
it., have voluntarily promised to write for Tuf.
States and Union, in behalf of the cause in which
♦ve are enlisted, as they did in by gone years.
Jt will be furnished to subscribers at the low
price of
ONE DOLLAR PER YEAR.
This is but, barely remunerative; but we bare
placed it thus low in order that it may be within
the reach of every Democrat and others who are
inclined to read it. It will contain all the lead
ing editorials which appear in the daily editions,
as well as a large amount of general intelligence,
embracing much valuable information relating to
the affairs of government, and matters of interest
appertaining to Literature, Agriculture and Coin
merce. It will also contain all
THE GOVERNMENT ADVERTISEMENTS
and official notices.
The events which will transpire during the
next twelve nonths will make a paper published
at the seat of government of more than ordinary
interest.
The States and Union, during this period,
will contain a perfect history of the proceedings
of the
NEXT CONGRESS,
which will, perhaps, be of more interest to the
nation than any previous Congress which Las as
sembled at Washington since the formation of the
government.
It will embrace the whole political canvass
for the
NEXT PRESIDENCY.
up to the day on which the election takes place;
iu fact, it may be regarded as the
CAMPAIGN PAPER,
and the cheapest paper of the kind ever issued.
We see no reason why its circulation shouM not
be extended to fifty thousand in a few months.
The indications are favorable to such a result from
the substantial manifestations which we receive
day by day in the large number of subscribers.
A remittance may be made for a single copy by
carefully wrapping up a GOLD DOLLAR and
enclosing it in an envelope.

HOSTETTER’S
STOMAGH BITTERS.
Tlio proprietors and manufacturers of IIOS
TKTTKIUS UKLKIIP*ATKD STOMACH IUT
TKIIS can appeal with perfect confidence to
physicians and citizens generally of the United
States, because the article has attained a repu
tation heretofore unknown. A few facts upon
this point will speak more powerfully than
volumes of hare assertion or blazoning puffery.
The consumption of Hostetler’s Stomach Hit
ters for the last year amounted to over a half
million bottles, and from its manifest steady
increase in times past, it is evident that during
tlie coming year the consumption will reach
near one million bottles. This immense amount
could never have been sold but for the rare
medicinal properties contained in the prepara
tion, and the sanction ot the most prominent
physicians in those sections of the country
where the article is best known, who not only
recommend the Hitters to their patients, but
are ready at all times to give testimonials to its
efficacy in all cases of stomnchic derangements
and the diseases resulting therefrom.
This is not a temporary popularity, obtained
l>v extraordinary efforts in the way of trum
peting the qualities of the Hitters, but a solid
estimation of an invaluable medicine, which is
destined to be as enduring as lime itself.
Hostetler’s Stomach Hillers have proved
a Godsend to regions where fever and ague
and various other bilious complaints have
counted their victims by hundreds. To be
able to state confidently that tho “Hitters”
aro a certain cure for the Dyspepsia and like
diseases, is to the proprietors a source of un
alloyed pleasure. It removes all morbid matter
from the stomach, purifies tlie bh>ou, and
imparts renewed vitality to the nervous system,
giving it that tone and energy indispensable
for the restoration of health. It operates upon
the stomach, liver, and other digestive organs,
mildly lmt powerfully, and soon restores them
to a condition essential to the healthy discharge
of the functions of nature.
Elderly persons may use the Hillers daily as
per directions on the bottle, and they will find
in if a stimulant peculiarly adapted to comfort
declining years, as it is pleasant to the palate,
invigorating to the bowels, excellent ns a tonio,
and rejuvenating generally. We have the evi
dence of thousands of aged men and women
who have experienced the benefit of using this
preparation while suffering from stomach de
rangements and general debility: acting under
the advice of physicians, they have abandoned
all deleterious drugs and fairly tested the
merits of this article. A few words to tlie
gentler sex. There are certain period* when
their cares arc so harassing that many of them
sink under the trial. The relation of mother
and child is so absorbingly tender, that the
mother, especially if she be young, is apt to
forgot her own health in her extreme anxiety
for her infant. Should the period of maternity
arrive during the summer season, the wear of
body and mind is generally aggravated. Here,
then, is a necessity for n stimulant to recupe
rate the energies of the system, and enable the
mother to hear up under her exhausting trials
and responsibilities. Nursing mothers gene
rally prefer the Hitlers to all other iiivigora
tors that receive the endorsement of physi
cians, because it is agreeable to the taste as
well as certain to give a permanent increase
of bodily strength.
All those persons, to whom we have particu
larly referred above, to wit: sufiorers from
fever and ague, caused ly malaria, diarrhoea,
dysentery, indigestion, loss of appetite, and
all diseases or derangement* of the stomach,
superannuated invalids, persons of sedentary
occupation, and nursing mothers, will consult
their own physical welfare by giving to Hos
tel tor’s Celebrated Stomach Hitters a trial.
CAUTION. —Wc caution the public against
using any of tlac many imitations or counter
feits, but ask for Hostkttkr’s Cki.kukatkd
Stomach Hitters, and sec that each bottle has
the words “Dr. J. Hostetler** Stomach Bitters”
blown on the side of the bottle, and stamped
on the metallic cap covering the cork, and
observe that our autograph si gnu lure is on tho
label.

Scrofula, or King’s Evil,
Is a constitutional disease, n corruption of tho
blood, by which this fluid becomes vitiated,
weak, and poor. Doing in the circulation, it
pervades the whole body, and may burst out
in disease on any part ot* it. No organ is free
from its attacks, nor is there one which it may
not destroy. The scrofulous taint i> variously
caused by mercurial disease, low living, dis
ordered or unhealthy food, impure air, tilth
and iilthv habits, the depressing vices, and,
above all, by the venereal infection. What
ever be its origin, it is hereditary in the con
stitution, descending “from parents to children
unto the third and fourth generation ; ” indeed,
it seems to he the rod of liim who says, “1
will visit the iniquities of the lathers upon
their children.”
Its effects commence by deposition from the
blood of corrupt or ulcerous matter, which, in
the lung , liver, and internal organs, is termed
tubercles; in the glands, swellings; atul on
the surface, eruptions or sores. This foul cor
ruption, which genders in the blood, depresses
the energies of life, so that scrofulous constitu
tions not only suffer from scrofulous com
plaints, but they have far less power to with
stand the attacks of other diseases; conse
quently vast numbers perish by disorders
which, although not scrofulous in their nature,
are still rendered fatal by this taint in the
system. Most of the consumption which de
cimates the human family has its origin directly
in this scrofulous contamination; and man)
destructive diseases of the liver, kidneys, brain,
and, indeed, of all the organs, arise from or
nre aggravated by the same cause.
One quarter of all our people are scrofulous;
their persons arc invaded by this lurking in
f *ction, and their health is undermined by it.
To cleanse it from the system we must renovate
the blood by on alterative medicine, and in
vigorate it by healthy food and exercise.
Such a medicine we supply in
AYER'S
Compound Extract of Sarsaparilla,
the most effectual remedy which the medical
skill of our times can devise for this every
where prevailing and fatal malady. It is com
bined from the most active remedial* that have
boon discovered for the expurgation of this foul
disorder from the blood, and the rescue of the
system from its destructive consequences.
Hence it should be employed for the cure of
not only Scrofula, but also those other affec
tions which arise from it, such as Eruptive
and Skin Diseases, St. Anthony’s Fire,
Rose, or Erysipelas, Pimples, Pustules,
Blotches, Plains and Boils, Tumors, Tetter
and Salt Rheum, Scald Head, Ringworm,
Rheumatism, Syphilitic and Mercurial Dis
eases, Dropsy, Dyspepsia, Debility, and,
indeed, all Complaints arising from Vitia
ted or Impure Blood. The popular belief
in “ impurity of the blood ” is founded in truth,
for scrofula is a degeneration of the blood. The
particular purpose and virtue of this Sarsapa
rilla is to purify and regenerate this vital fluid,
without which sound health is impossible in
contaminated constitutions.
Ayer’s Cathartic Pills,
FOR ALL THE PURPOSES OF A FAMILY PHYSIC,
arc so composed that disease within the range of
their action can rarely withstand or evade them,
tlicir penetrating properties search, and cleanse,
and invigorate every portion of the human organ
ism, correcting its diseased action, and restoring
its healthy vitalities. Asa consequence of these
properties, the invalid who is bowed down with
pain or physical debility is astonished to find his
health or energy restored by a remedy at once so
simple and inviting.
Not only do they cure the every-flny complaints
of every body, but also many formidable and
dangerous diseases. The agent below named is
pleased to furnish gratis my American Almanac,
containing certificates of their cures and directions
for their use in the following complaints: Costive
iicss, Heartburn, Heartache artsiny from disordered
Stomach, Xamea, Indigestion'. Pain in and Morbid-
Inaction o f the Bowels, Flatulency, Loss o f Appe
tite, Jaundice, and other kindred complaints,
arising from a low state of the body or obstruction
c>f its functions.
Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral,
TOR THE It AVID CURE OF
Coughs, Colds, Inflnemsa, Hoarseness,
Croup Bronchitis, Incipient Consump
tion, and for the relief of Consumptive
Patients in advanced stages of the
disease.
So wide is the field of its usefulness and so nu
merous arc the cases of its cures, that almost
every section of country abounds in persons pub
licly known, who have been restored from alarming
and even desperate diseases of the lungs by its
use. When once tried, its superiority over every
other medicine of its kind is too apparent to escape
observation, and where its virtues are known, the
public no longer hesitate what antidote to employ
for the distressing and dangerous affections of the
pulmonary organs that are incident to our climate.
While many inferior remedies thrust upon the
community have failed and been discarded, this
has gained friends by every trial, conferred benefits
on the afflicted they can never forget, and pro
duced cures too numerous and too remarkable to
be forgotten.

Ayer’s Sarsaparilla
A compound’ remedy, in’ -Which we have la
bored to produce the most effectual alterative
that can be made. It is a concentrated extract
of ruin Sarsaparilla, so combined with other
substances of still greater alterative po’wer as
to afford an effective antidote for the diseases
Sarsaparilla is reputed to cure. It is believed
that siteh a remedy is wanted by those who
suffer from Strumous complaints, and that one
which will accomplish their cure must prove
of immense service to this large class of our
afflicted fellow-citizens. llow completely this
compound will do it has been proven by exper
iment on many of the worst eases to bo found
of the following complaints:
Scrofula and Scrofulous CoMflAtSts,
Eruptions and Eruptive Diseases, Ulceus,
Pimples, Blotches, Tumors, Salt llhkum,
Scald Head, Syphilis and Syphilitic Af
fections, Mercurial Disease, Dropsy, Neu
ralgia or Tic Douloureux, Deuii.ity, Dys
pepsia and Indigestion? Erysipelas, Hose
or St. Anthony’s Fire, and indeed the whole
class of complaints ari.dng from Impurity of
the Blood.
This compound will be found a groat pro
moter of health, when taken in the spring, to
expel tho foul humors which fester in the
blood at that season of the year. By the time
ly expulsion of them many rankling disorders
are nipped in the bud. Multitudes can, by
the aid of this remedy, spare themselves from
the endurance of foul eruptions and ulcerous
sores, through which the system will strive to
rid itself of corruptions, if not assisted to do
this through the natural channels of the body
by an alterative medicine. Cleanse out the
vitiated blood whenever you find its impurities
bursting through the skin in pimples, eruptions,
or sores; cleanse it when you find it is ob
structed and sluggish in the veins ; cleanse it
whenever it is foul, and your feelings will tell
you when. Even where no particular disorder
is felt, people enjoy better health, and live
longer, for cleansing the blood. Keep the
blood healthy, and all is well; but with this
pabulum of life disordered, there can be no
lasting health. Sooner or later something
must go wrong, and the great machinery of
life is disordered or overthrown.
Sarsaparilla has, and deserves much, the
reputation of accomplishing these ends. But
the world has been egregiously deceived by
preparations of it, partly because the drug
alone has not all the virtue that is claimed
for it, but more because many preparations,
pretending to he concentrated extracts of it,
contain but little of the virtue of Sarsaparilla,
or any thing else.
During late years the public have been mis
led by large bottles, pretending to give a quart
of Extract of Sarsaparilla for one dollar. Most
of these have been frauds upon the sick, for
they not only contain little, if any, Sarsapa
rilla, but often no curative properties whatev
er. lienee, bitter and painful disappointment
has followed the use of the various extracts of
Sarsaparilla which Hood tho market, until the
name itself is justly despised, and has become
synonymous with imposition and cheat. Still
we call this compound Sarsaparilla, and intend
to supply such a remedy as shall rescue the
name from the load of obloquy which rests
upon it. And we think we have ground for
believing it has virtues which are irresistible
by the ordinary run of the <li eases it is intend
ed to cure. In ord rto secure their complete
eradication from the system, the remedy should
be judiciously taken according to directions on
the bottle.

CELEBRATED
LIVER PILLS,
FOR THE CUR* CP
Hepatitis or Liver Complaint,
DYSPEPSIA AND SICK. HEADACHE.
Symptoms of a Diseased Liver.
PAIN in the right side, under the edge of
the ribs, increase on pressure; sometimes
the pain is in the left side; the patient is
rarely able to lie on the left side; sometimes
the pain is felt under the shoulder blade,
and it frequently extends to the top of the
shoulder, and is sometimes mistaken for a
rheumatism in the arm. The stomach is
affected with loss of appetite and sickness,
the bowels in general are costive, sometimes
alternative with lax; the head is troubled
with pain, accompanied with a dull, heavy
sensation in the back part. There is gene
rally a considerable loss of memory, accom
panied with a painful sensation of having
left undone something which ought to have
been done. A slight, dry cough is some
times an attendant. The patient complains
of weariness and debility; he is easily startled*
his feet arc cold or burning, and he com
plains of a prickly sensation of the skin j
his spirits arc low; and although he is satis
fied that exercise would be beneficial to him*
yet he can scarcely summon up fortitude
cn.Tigh to try it. In fact, he distrusts every
remedy. Several of the above symptoms
attend the disease, but cases have occurred!
where few of them existed, yet examination
of the body, after death, has shown the
liver to have been extensively deranged.
AGUE AND FEVER.
Dr. M’Lane’s Liver Pills, in cases or-
Ague and Fever, when taken with Quinine,
are productive of the most happy results. No.
better cathartic can he used, preparatory to.
or after taking Quinine. Wc would advise
all who arc afflicted with this disease to give
them a fair trial.
