TIIE STATES AND UNION
“I he Union” is a name that is endeared to the
editor of The States by many agreeable recollec
tions. He brought it with him to Washington
from Nashville, where it was the title of the home
*rgan of General Jackson and Mr. Polk, (with
which he was editorially associated,) and mainly
adopted, at his instance, by the lamented Mr.
Ritchie, the then Nestor of the American press,
as at appropriate name for the Democratic jour
nal which they jointly established, and the first
number of which was issued on Jefferson’s birth
day in 1845. It is a name that was beloved by ;
such sterling patriots and Democrats as General
Jackson, James K. Polk, Mr. Ritchie, General
Armstrong, and their contemporaries, and a name
graven on the hearts of the Democratic party.
\\ hen the journal which it represented found
that its interests would be benefited by casting

that, as it had been thus repudiated, we would

HOSTETTER’S
STOMACH BITTERS.
Tlie proprietors and manufacturers of lIOS
TKTTKU'S CKLKBKATKD STOMACH BIT
TKII Scan appeal with perfect confidence to
physicians and citizens jrcnetiilly of the Initial
States, Because the article has attained a repu
tation hereiol'ore unknown. A few tacts upon
this point will speak more powerfully than
volumes ot bare assertion or blazoning puffery.
Tito consumption of Hostetler's .Stomach Bit
ters tor the last year amounted to over a half
niilliou Bottles, a ltd from its manifest steady
increase in times past, it is efnttnt that during
the coming year the consumption will reach
near one million bot tles. This immense amount
could never have been sold but for the rare
medicinal properties contained in the prepara
tion. and ilit* sanction oi* the most prominent
physicians in those sections of the country
where the article is best known, who not only
recommend the Bitters to their patients, but
are ready at all times to give testimonials to its
efficacy in all cases of stomachic derangements
and the diseases resulting therefrom.
This is not a temporary popularity, obtained
by extraordinary efforts in tin* way of trum
peting the qualities of the Bitters. But a solid
estimation of an invaluable medicine, which is
destined to he as enduring as time itself.
Hosteller's Stomach Bitters have proved
a (lodsetui to regions where fever and ague
and various other bilious complaints have
counted their victims by hundreds. To be
able to state confidently that the “Bitters”
are a certaiu cure for the Dyspepsia and like
diseases, is to the proprietors a source of un
alloyed pleasure. It removes all morbid matter
from the stomach, purifies the Mood, and
imparts renewed vitality to the nervous system,
giving it that tone and energy indispensable
for the restoration of health. It operates upon
the stomach, liver, and other digestive organs,
mild'y but powerfully, and soon restores them
to a condition essential to the healthy discharge
of tho functions of nature.
Elderly persons may use the Bitters daily as
per directions on the bottle, and they will find
in it a stimulant peculiarly adapted to coinfort
declining years, a* it is pleasant to the palate,
invigorating lolhe bowels, excellent as a tonic,
and rejuvenating gem rally. We have the evi
dence of thousands of aged men ami women
who have experienced the benefit of using this
preparation while Mistering from stomach dc
rangetnents and general debility: acting under
the advice of physicians, they have abandoned
all deleterious drugs and fairly tested the
merits of this article. A few words to tlie
gentler sex. There are certain periods when
their cares avc so harassing that many of them
sink under the trial. The relation of mother
and child is so absorbingly tender, that the
mother, especially if she be young, is apt to
forgot her own limith in her extreme anxiety
for her infant. Should the period of maternity
arrive during tlie summer season, the wear of
body and mind is generally aggravated. Here,
then, is a necessity fora stimulant to recupe
rate the energies of the system, and enable the
mother to bear up under her exhausting trials
and responsibilities. Nursing mothers gene
rally prefer the Bitters to all other invigoa
tors that receive the endorsement of physi
cians, because it is agreeable to the taste as
well as certain to give a permanent increase
of bodily strength.
All those prisons, to whom we have particu
larly referred above, to wit: sufferers from
fever and ague, caused by malaria, diarrhoea,
dysentery, indigestion, loss of appetite, and
all diseases or derangements of the stomach,
superannuated invalids, persons of sedentary
occupation, and nursing mothers, will consult
their own physical welfare by giving to Hos
tetler's Celebrated St<nincli Bitters a trial.
CAUTION.—We caution the public against
using any of the many imitations or counter
feits, but ask for Hostutthu’s C:i.ki:i?atki>
Stomach Ifirmts, and see that eacli Lottie has
the words •‘Dr. J. Hostettcr’s Stomach Bitters”
blown on the side of the Bottle, and stamped
on the metallic cap covering the cork, and
observe that our autograph signature is on the
label.

Scrofula, or Singes f^il,
is a cotisti'.ulhmal disea •*, a corruption of the
blood, by which this lluid becomes vitiated
w eak, ami poor. B ing in the circulation, it
pervades the \vh 1 • body, a nil nm v burst out
m dis. asv* on any part of it. No organ is free
from iti attacks nor is there one which it may
not destroy. The scrofulou.. taint is varioudy
causal by mercurial ik-iaso, low living, dis
ordered or unhealthy food, impure air, filth
and filthy habits, the depressing vices, and,
above all, by the venereal infection. What
ever be its oiig.n, it is luti dihiry in the con
stitution, descending “from pan nts to children
unto the third and fourth ;; nerniion;” indeed,
ic Svcms to be the rod of Him who says, “I
will visit the iniquities of the fathers upon
their children.”
Its clFcets commence by and *po-ition from the
blood of corrupt or ulcerous matter, which, in
the lung , liver, and internal organs, is termed
tubercles; in the glands swellings; and on
the Mtrfac *, eruptions or fores. This foul cor
ruption, which g. ml. is in the blood, and pre.-ses
the energies of ii c, .o that scrofulous constitu
tion* not only siiilVr from scrofulous com
plaints, but they have far less power to with
stand the attacks of other diseases; conse
quently Vast numbers peri-h by di orders
which, although hot .scrofulous in their nature,
are still rendered fatal by this taint in the
system. Most of the con umption which de
cimates the human family has its origin directly
in this scrofulous contamination; and main
destructive diseases of the liver, kidneys, brain,
and, indeed, of all the organs, arise from or
are aggravated by the same cause.
One quarter of all our people arc scrofulous ;
tlicir persons are invaded bv this lurking in
fection, and their health is undermined by it.
To cleanse it from the system we must renovate
the blood by an alterative medicine, and in
vigorate it by healthy food and exercise.
Such a medicine wc supply in
AYER'S
Compound Extract of Sarsaparilla,
the most effectual remedy which the medical
skill of our times can devise for this every
where prevailing and fatal malady. It is com
bined from the most active remcdials that have
been discovered for the expurgation of this foul
disorder from the blood, and the rescue of the
system from its destructive consequences.
Hence it should be employed for the cure of
not only Scrofula, but also those other affec
tions w hich arise from it, such as Eruptive
and Skin Diseases, St. Anthony’s Fire,
Hose, or Erysipelas, Pimples, Pustules,
Blotches. Plains and Boils, Tumors, Tetter
and Salt Rheum, Scald Head, Ringworm,
Rheumatism, Syphilitic and Mercurial Dis
eases, Dropsy, Dyspepsia, Debility, and,
indeed, all Complaints arising from Vitia
ted or Impure Blood. The popular belief
in “ impurity of the blood ” is founded in truth,
for scrofula is a degeneration of the blood. The
particular purpose and virtue of this Sarsapa
rilla is to purify and regenerate this vital fluid,
without which sound health is impossible in
contaminated constitutions.
Ayer’s Cathartic Pills,
FOR ALL THE PURPOSES OF A FAMILY PHYSIO,
arc so composed that disease within the range of
tliv.ir action cau rarely withstand or evade them,
their penetrating properties search, and cleanse,
and invigorate every portion of the human organ
ism, correcting its diseased action, and restoring
its healthy vitalities. Asa consequence of these
properties, the invalid who is bowed down with
pain or physical debility is astonished to find his
health or energy restored by a remedy at once so
simple and inviting.
Not only do they cure the every-day complaints
of every body, but also many formilla! le and
dangerous diseases. The agent below named is
pleased to furnish gratis my American Almanac,
containing certificates of their cures and directions
for tlicil* use in the following eouipluintw : Ovoti ve
il css, //( a/ thorn, I imdac/ie arising from disordered
Stomach, Xuwicn, Indirection. Pain in and Morbid
Inaction of the Houck, flatulency. Loss of Appe
tite, Jaundice, and other kindred complaints,
arising from a low state of the body or obstruction
of its functions.
Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral,
FOR THE RABID CUKE OF
Coughs, Colds, Influenza, Hoarseness,
Cioup Estonchitis, Incipient Consump
tion. and for the relief of Consumptive
Patients in advanced stages of the
disease.
So wide is the field of its usefulness and so nu
merous r.re the eases of its cures, that almost
every section of country abounds in persons pub
licly known, who l'.ave keen rrston and from alarming
ar.u even desperate diseases of the lungs by its
use. When once tried, its superiority over every
other medicine of it- kind is too apparent to escape
observation, and where its virtues arc known, the
public no longer hesitate what antidote to employ
for the distressing and dangerous affections of the
pulmonary organs that are incident to our climate.
While many inferior remedies thrust upon the
voinmunity have failid and been discarded, this
has gained friends by every trial, confi rred benefits
on the al'flirted they i-an never forget, and pro
due* *i ernes too numerous and too remarkable to
be foigotten.

‘Ayer’s Sarsaparilla
A compound remedy, in which we have la
bored to produce the most effectual alterative
that can he made. Lt is a concentrated extri.et
of Para Sarsaparilla, so combined with other
substances of still greater alterative power as
to afford an effective antidote for the diseases
Sarsaparilla is reputed to cure. It is believed
that such a remedy is wanted by tho ;o who
suffer from Strumous complaints, and that one
which will accomplish their cure mu-t prove
of immense service to this large class of our
afflicted fellow-citizens, How completely this
compound will doit has been proven by exper
iment on many of the worst cases to be found
of the following complaints:
Scrofula and Scrofulous Complaints,
Eruptions and Eruptive Diseases, Ulcers,
Pimples, Blotches, Tumors, Salt Rheum,
Scald Head, Syphilis and Syphilitic Af
fections, Mercurial Disease, Dropsy, Neu
ralgia oh Tic Douloureux, Dkiiility, Dys
pepsia and Indigestion, Erysi pleas, Rose
ou St. Anthony’s Fire, and indeed the whole
class of complaints arising from Impurity of
the Blood.
This compound will be found a great pro
moter of health, when taken in the spring, to
expel the foul humors which fest *r in the
blood at that season of the year. By the time
ly expulsion of them many rankling disorders
are nipped in the bud. Multitudes can, by
the aid of this remedy, spare themselves from
the endurance of foul eruptions and ulcerous
sores, through which the system will strive to
lid itself of corruptions, if not asMstcd to do
this through the natural channels of the body
by an alterative medicine. Cleanse out the
vitiated blood whenever you find its impurities
bursting through the skin in pimples, eruptions,
or sores; cleanse it when you find it is ob
structed and sluggish in the veins ; cleanse it
whenever it is foul, and your feelings will tell
you when. Even where no particular disorder
is felt, people enjoy better health, and live
longer, for cleansing the blood. Keep the
blood healthy, and all is well; but with this
pabulum of life disordered, there can be no
lasting health. Sooner or later something
mint go wrong, and the great machinery of
life is disordered or overthrown.
.Sarsaparilla has, and deserves much, the
reputation of accomplishing these ends. But
the world has been egrcgiously deceived by
preparations of it, partly because the drug
alone lias not all the virtue that is claimed
for it, but more because many preparations,
pretending to he concentrated extracts of it,
contain but little of the virtue of .Sarsaparilla,
or any thing else.
Dining late ye;irs the public have been mis
led by large bottles, pretending to give a quart
of Extract of Sarsaparilla for one dollar. Most
of these have been frauds upon the* sick, for
they not only contain little, if any, Sarsapa
rilla, hut often no curat ire properties whatev
er. lienee, hitter and painful disappointment
has followed the u-c of the* various extracts of
Sarsaparilla which llood the market, until the
name itself is justly despised, and has become
synonymous with imposition and cheat. Still
we* call this compound Sarsaparilla, and intend
to supply tuch a remedy as shall rescue the
name from the load of obloquy which rests
upon ic. And avc think we have* ground for
believing it has virtues which are irresistible*
by the ordinary run of the di-ease*., it is intend
cl to cure. In order to secure their complete
eradication from the system, the remedy should
l>o judiciously taken according to directions on
the bottle.

CELEBRATED
LIVER PILLS,
FOR THE CURE (.?
Hepatitis or Liver Complaint,
| DYSPEPSIA AND SICK. HEADACHE.
Symptoms of a Diseased Liver.
PAIN in the right side, under the edge of
the ribs, increase on pressure; sometime*
the pain is in the left side; the patient is
rarely able to lie on the left side; sometimes
the pain is felt under the shoulder blade,
and it frequently extends to the top of the
shoulder, and is sometimes mistaken for a
rheumatism in the arm. The stomach is
affected with loss of appetite and sickness,
the bowels in general are costive, sometimes
alternative with lax; the head is troubled
with pain, accompanied with a dull, heavy
sensation in the back part. There is gene
rally a considerable loss of memory, accom
panied with a painful sensation of having
left undone something which ought to have
been done. A slight, dry cough is some
times an attendant. The patient complains
of weariness and debility; he is easily startled,
bis feet arc cold or burning, and he com
plains of a prickly sensation of the skin;
liis spirits arc low; and although he is satis
fied that exercise would be beneficial to him,
yet he can scarcely summon up fortitude
cis.-ugh to try it. In fact, lie distrusts every
remedy. Several of the above symptoms
attend the disease, but cases have occurred
where few of them existed, yet examination
of the body, after death, has shown the
liver to have been extensively deranged,
AGUE AND FEVER.
Dr. M’Lane’s Liver Pills, in cases op
Ague and Fever, when taken with Quinine,
arc productive of the most happy results. Nn
better cathartic can be used, preparatory to,
or alter taking Quinine. We would advise
all who are afflicted with this disease to give
them A FAIR TRIAL.
