THE STATES AND UNION
“1 lie Union “ is a name that is endeared to the
editor of Toe Staves by many agreeable recollec
tions. He bvongfrt it with him to Washington
from Nashville, where it was the title of the home
■rgau of General Jackson and Mr. Polk, (with
which lie was editorially associated,) and mainly
wloytcd, at his instance, by the lamented Mr.
Ritchie, the then Nestor of the American press,
as an appropriate name for the Democratic jour
nal which they jointly established, and the firsl
number of which wns issued on Jefferson’s birth
day in 1845. It is a name that was beloved by
Bucli sterling patriots and Democrats as General
Jackson, James K. Polk, Mr. Ritchie, General
Armstrong, and their contemporaries, and a name
graven on the hearts of the Democratic party.
When the journal which it represented found
that its interests would he benefited bv casting
it aside and substituting another, we then resolved
that, as it had been thus repudiated, we would
take it up, and place it at the head of our own
columns, as soon ns a suitable period arrived.
The States and Union will he conducted with
an exclusive regard to the principles of the State-
Rights Democracy, will he independent of fac
tions, and unbiased by partial interests. We may
add, that several of the ablest contributors to the
Union during the time we were connected with
it, have voluntarily promised to write for Tur.

ns well as a large amount of general intelligence,
embracing much valuable information relating to
the affair* off government, and matters of interest
appertaining to Literature, Agriculture and Com
nrercc. It will also contain all
THE GOVERNMENT ADVERTISEMENTS
and official notices.
The events which will transpire during the
next twelve nonths will make a paper published
at the seat of government of more than ordinary
interest.
The States and Union, during this period,
will eoutuiu a perfect history of the proceedings
of the
NEXT CONGRESS,
which will, perhaps, be of more interest to the
nation than any previous Congress which has ns
setnblcd at Washington since the formation of the

It will embrace the whole political canvass

are roady at all time* to give testimonials to its
efficacy in a cases of stomachic derangements
and the diseases resulting therefrom.
This is not a temporary popularity, obtained
by extraordinary efforts in the way of trum
peting the qualities of the Ritters, but n solid
estimation of an invaluable medicine, which is
destined to he as enduring as time itself.
Hostetler's .Stomach Miners have proved

And varitme other bilious complaints have
counted their victim* by hundreds. To bo
able to state confidently that the ‘'Bitters 0
are a certain cure for the Dyspepsia and like
diseases, is to the proprietors a source of un
alloyed pleasure. It removes all morbid matter
from the stomach, purifies the blood, and
imparls renewed vitality to the nervous system,
giving it that tone and energy indispensable
for the restoration of health. It operates upon
tlie stomach, liver, and other digestive organs,
mildly but powerfully, and soon restores thorn
to ucondiiion essential to the healthy discharge
of the functions of nature.
Elderly persons may use the Ritters daily ns
per directions on the bottle, and they will find
in it a stimulant peculiarly adapted to comfort
declining years', as it i* pleasant to tho palate,
invigorating to the bowels, excellent as a tonio,
and rejuvenating generally. We have the evi
dence of thousands of aged men and women
who lmve experienced the benefit of using this
preparation while suffering from stomach de
rangements und general debility: acting under
tlie advice of physicians, they have abandoned
all deleterious drugs and fairly tested the
merits of this artiefc. A few words to the
gentler sex. There are certain periods when
their cares are so harassing that them
sink under the trial. The relation of mother
and child is so absorbingly tender, that the
mother, especially if she he young, is apt to
forget her own health in her extreme anxiety
for her infant, fthoftfd the period of maferwity
arrive during she summer season, the wear of
body and mind is generally aggravated. Here,
then, is a necessity for a stimulant to recupe
rate the energies of the system, and enable the
mother to hear up tinder her exhausting trials
and responsibilities. Nursing mot hers gene

well as certain to give a permanent increase
of bodily strength.
All those persons, to whom we have particu

fever and ague, caused by malaria, diarrhoea,
dysentery, indigestion, loss of appetite, and
all diseases or derangements of the •stomach,
superannuated invalids, persons of sedentary

Scrofula, or King’s Evil,
a constitutional diswso, a corruption of the
blood, by which this fluid hut •tunes vitiated,
weak, ami pour. Bring in the circulation, it
purvndus tho whole body, and may burst out
ill disease on any part of it. No organ U free
from it> attacks, nor is there one which it may
not and froy. Thu scrofulous taint is variously
caU'cd by Mercurial disease, low living, dis
ordered or unhealthy food, impure air, tilth
and filthy habits, the V pressing viees, and,
above all, liy the venereal infection. What
ever bo its origin, it is hereditary in the con
stitution, descending “ from parents to efiiklivn
unto the third and fourth Kcftcrirf ion ;hi deed,
it seems to hr ffo* rod of Him who says, rt 1
will visit the iniquities of the fathers upon
their children.”
Its effect* commence by depo ition from the
blood of corrupt or ulcerous matter, which, in
the lung , liver, and internal organs, is termed
tubercles; in the glands, swellings; and on
the surface, eruptions iff sfmat. This foul cor
ruption, which genders in the blood, depresses
the energies of life, so that scrofulous constitu
tions not only suffer from scrofulous com
plaints, but they have far loss power to with
stand the attacks of other diseases; conse
quently vast numbers perish by disorders
which, although not scrofulous hi their nature,
arc still rendered fatal by this taint in the
system. Most of the consumption which de
cimate* the human family has its origin directly
in this scrofulous contamination; and many
destructive diseases of the liver, kidneys, brain,
and, indeed, of all the organs, arise from or
are aggravated to tho same cause.
One quarter of nil our people nrc scrofulous;
their persons are invaded Pry this forking in
fection, and their health is undermined by it.
To cleanse it from the system we must renovate
the blood by sm alterative medicine, and in
vigorate it by healthy food and exercise.
Such a medicine wc supply in

bined from the most active remedial, that have
been disemveretl for the expurgation of this foul
disorder from the Mood, and the rescue of the
system from its destructive consequences.
Hence it should be employed for the cure of
not only Scrofula, hut also those other affec

in “ impurity off the Irluwl” is founded in truth,
for scrofula is a degeneration of the blood. The
particular purpose and virtue of this Sarsapa

without which sound health is impossible in

every section of country abounds in persons pub

use. When once tried, its superiority over every
other medicine of its kind is too apparent to escape
observation, and where its virtue* ore known, tho

Ayer’s Sarsaparilla
A compound remedy, in which we have la
bored to produce the most effectual alterative
that ean he made. It is a concentrated extract
of Para Sarsaparilla, so combined with other
substunccs of still greater alterative power as
to afford an effective antidote for the diseases
Sarsaparilla is reputed to cure. It is believed
that such a remedy is wanted by those who
Buffer from Strumous complaints, and that one
which will accomplish their cure must prove
of immense service to this large class of our
afflicted fellow-citizens. llow completely this
compound will do it has been proven by exper
iment on many of the worst cases to be found
of the following complaints:
SeitOlTLX AND ScHOFI - 1,0 IS COMPLAINTS,
Eruptions AND EutPTIVK UISKASBS, Uuuiis,
I’IMPLF.s, Blotchks, Ti moiis, Salt Rhei n,
Scald Head, Syphilis and Syphilitic Ar-
KKonoNH, Mercurial Disease, Dropsy, Nr.c
haloia or Tic Doclourecx, Debility, Dys
pepsia and Indigestion, Erysipelas, Rose
on St. Anthony’s Fire, and indeed the whole
class of complaints arising from Impurity op
the Blood.
This compound will he found a great pro
moter of health, when taken in the spring, to
c.Apcl the foul humors whieh fester ill the
blood at that season of the year. By the time
ly expulsion of them many rankling disorders
are nipped in the hud. Multitudes ean, by
the aid of this remedy, spare themselves from
the endurance of foul eruptions and ulcerous
sores, through which the system will strive to
rid itself of corruptions, if not assisted to do
this through the natural channels of the body
by an alterative medicine. Cleanse out the
vitiated blood whenever you find its impurities
bursting through the skin in pimples, eruptions,
or sores; cleanse it when you find it is ob
structed and sluggish in the veins ; cleanse it
whenever it is foul, and your feelings will tell
you when. Even where no particular disorder
is felt, people enjoy better health, and live
longer, for cleansing the blood. Keep the
blood healthy, and all is well; but with this
pabulum of life disordered, there can be no
lasting health. Sooner or later something
must go wrong, and the great machinery of
life is disordered or overthrown.
Sarsaparilla has, and deserves much, the
reputation of accomplishing these ends. But
the world has been cgrcgiously deceived by
preparations of it, partly because the drug
alone has not all the virtue that is claimed
for it, but more because many preparations,
pretending to he concentrated extracts of it,
contain but little of the virtue of Sarsaparilla,
or any thing else.
During late years the public have been mis
led by large bottles, pretending to give a quart
of Extract of Sarsaparilla for one dollar. Most
of these have been frauds upon the sick, for
they not only contain little, if any, Sarsapa
rilla, but often no curative properties whatev
er. lienee, bitter mid painful disappointment
has followed the use of the various extracts of
Sarsaparilla which flood the market, until the
mine itself is justly despised, and has become
synonymous with imposition and cheat. Still
we ©ill (Ms compound Sarsaparilla, and intend
to supply such a remedy as shall rescue the
name from the load of obloquy which rests
upon it. And wc think we have ground for
believing, it has virtues which arc irresistible
by tho ordinary run of the diseases it is intend
ed to cure. In order to secure their complete
eradication from the system, the remedy should
he judiciously taken according to directions on
the bottle,

CELEBRATED
LIVER PILLS,
FOR TUB CURB OP
Hepatitis or Liver Complaint,
DYSPEPSIA AND SICK. HEADACHE.
Symptoms of a Diseased Liver.
PAIN in the right side, under the edge of
the ribs, increase on pressure; sometime*
the pain is in the left side; the patient is
rarely able to lie on the left side; sometime*
the pain is felt under the shoulder blade,
and it frequently extends to the top of the
shoulder, and is sometimes mistaken for a
rheumatism in the arm. The stomach it
affected with loss of appetite and sickness,
the bowels in general arc costive, sometimes
alternative with lax; the head is troubled
with pain, accompanied with a dull, heavy
sensation in the back part. There is gene
rally a considerable loss of memory, accom
panied with a painful sensation of having
left undone something which ought to have
been done. A slight, dry cough is some
times an attendant. The patient complains
of weariness and debility; he is easily startled,
his feet are cold or burning, and he com
plains of a prickly sensation of the skin;
his spirits arc low; and although he is satit
fied that exercise would be beneficial to hint,
yet he can scarcely summon up fortituda
enough to try it. In fact, he distrusts every
remedy. Several of the above *ymptoinr
attend the disease, but cases have occurred
where few of them existed, yet examination
of the body, after death, has shown (ho
liver to have been extensively deranged,
AGUE AND FEVER.
Dr. M’Lane’s Liver Pills, in cases or
Ague and Fever, when taken with Quinine,
are productive of the most happy results. No
better cathartic can be used, preparatory Er>,
or after taking Quinine. We would advise
all who are afflicted with this disease to give
them a fair trial.
