make that department more interest

than ever before.
li’ any of the readers of the Report -
EB'shonld at anv time desire to con
sult the ScinUijic American, they cun
do so by calling at our office where
they are kept on tile.
Tn cry is for more houses to rent.
Why don’t some of our eapitahsts
meet the increasing demand by erect
ing a lot of nice cottages in the dif
ferent portions of town ? Tin -re is no
investment that pays better.
We with pleasure call attention to
Aggie Sapp’s notice of her restaurant,
and from what we have heard others
sav, we feel assured that all who will
favor Aggie with a call will go aw.-;,
bearing willing testimony that they
have got full value for their money.
Already we hear of young men
ru tking application for boar.l in our
town, in order that they may atteinl
Prof. Johnson’s school. The rut-look
is certainly encouraging for once nt
tlie Quitman Academy. M >th the
proper efforts upon tho part of the
citizens, there will be no better school
iu the State than we will have here.
A Card of Thanks.
The nndersimied takes this method
of expressing his thanks to his many
friends for their unsolicited efforts in
his behalf; in the last election. They
may rest assured that such manifes
tations of kl luess are truly appre

In every direction tho music u tlm
saw and hammer can be heard ill our
town, which betokens a degree of
prosperity long looked for, and very
much to be desired. In addition to
tiie number of buildings spoken of in
our last issue in course of cons< ruc
tion, we can now add another ii'cu
is being built by that enterprising
and rising young lawyer, W. S. Hum
phreys, as a law office in the business
portion of town, on Screven street.
Wonderful Success.
It is reported that Boschee's Ger
man Syrup has, since its introduction
in the United States, reached the im
mense sale of 40,000 dozen per year
Over 6,000 Druggists have ordered
this medicine direct from the Factory,
at Woodbury, N. J., and not one has
reported a single failure, lmt every
letter speaks of its astonishing suc
cess iu curing severe Coughs, Colds
settled on the Breast, Consumption,
or any disease of the Throat and
Lungs. We advise any person that
has any predisposition to weak
Lungs, to go to their Druggists,
Jei.ks & Mabbett or H. H. Kayton,
and get this medicine, or inquire
about it. Regular size, 76 cents; sam
ple bottle, 10 cents. Two doses will
relieve any case. Don't neglect your
cough..
LOCAL OOTS.
—Dark nights, these.
—A good time now to save your
bacon.
—Less cotton and more corn and
oats this year.
—Some repairs arc being made on
the Court-house.
—Read the advertisement of splen
did plantation for sale.
—Wo will send you The Reporter
six months for one dollar.
—A now building is being erected
next door to the barber shop.
—The street lamps are quite a con
venience now to after-dark pedes
trians.
—These mornings are very cool
and frosty, but about noun it is quite
pleasant.
-The members of the new council
have been installed, and have com
menced business.
—We ask the attention of our
readers to our list of new advertise
ments in this issue.
A few bales of cotton still find
their way to tnis market. We think
t.lie supply is about out.
Ev- rvli,i Iv seems to have oats
on the brain* and we predict a large
crop the coming season.
—The county election passed off
quietly, notwithstanding a good many
candidates were in the field.
—The council appointed anew set
of night watchmen, who assumed
their duties a few evenings ago.
—A few cases of sickness tire re
ported in several localities, but good
health generally prevails throughout,
the county.
• —The Mclntosh house caught on
fire a few evenings ago, lmt the flames
were extinguished without causing
much damage.
—The big show is exhibiting
across the border this week, and en
tertained the good citizens of Madi
son yesterday.
—The amusements are not yet
over, and we learn that a regular old
fashioned candv-pulling is the next
thing in order.
Atlanticand Gulf railroad money
is not considered good in some locali
ties, just now, but we believe it passes
at par iu these parts.
—The circus and the election
brought to town tin immense crowd
of people on the 3d inst., and every
body appeared to be happy.
—From the many lend reports that
continually greet our ears, we think
the young hunters are playing sad
havoc with the robins and small birds.
—The periodical consumers of the
ardent imbibed very freely during
Christman week, and new resolutions
are now to hold good until the next
holiday.
—The . 'rent leading from the post
office corner to the depot is in a bad
condition, and becomes very disa
greeable to foot passengers during
wet wgather.
—The weather has been very
changeable for the past week or two,
and even the prophets cannot foretell
to-day whether it will be fair or
other win; to-morrow.
—The temptations to enjoy the
pleasures of the light fantastic were,
so great at the closing of the year as
to cause several to put at least one
foot out of the church.
V runaway horse created a con
siderable stir on our streets Monday,
and made tilings lively for a while.
He .as attached to a buggy, and
made a wreck of the same.
—The flying horses and the balloon
man were on the circus ground on
the day of the exhibition, and from
appearances, they raked in a good
s ipniy of the small change.
-Our v-'guiar W -hington letter
bus been crowded out for .several
weeks. We commence again this week
with a very interesting article from
that city, and our readers nmv look
fur them regularly hereafter.
—There were any number of danc
ing parlies throughout the county
during til l holidays just closed, and
we opine that many hearts were made
light and happy during the contin
uance of these social gatherings.
—ln view of the fact that the Quit
man high school begins its first ses
sion on the 221 instant, we will state
that those who propose patronizing
said institution should have their
children supplied with all necessaries
and be ready to attend.
—Howe’s great London circus gave
two performances in our town on the
3d instant. The collection of animals
was very fine, and the ring and tra
pese norformances fully up to the
standard. The five performing ele
phants did their part well, and alto
gether the exhibition was very good,
and most people seemed satisfied with
their investment.
—The fellow that mends broken
crockery was in town the other day,
and proved the value of his cement
by breaking the handle off a pitcher,
placing it back again, and then hold
ing small boys tip by the same. And
now if someone will conic along with
a patent for mending broken promises
and unsonnd resolutions, ho will no
doubt do a brisk business.
New year congratulations are about
over with.

take the liberty to suggest to our

Colquitt County Against the World.
Mr. Jesse King called upon us last
Monday and related the following
which he says is in every particular
true, viz: that four years ago Mrs-
Alexander Patterson gave birth to
two boy babies; two years ago she
gave birth to two more boy babies,
and daring the present month she
gave birth to three boy babies, mak
ing in all seven boy babies in the
short space of four years. Now if
this multiplying can be beat, we want
to know by whom, where, and when.
The seven boys are all living, growing
finely, and doing well.

Scarcity of .Money.
There is no doubt but the present

We learn from Mr. Win. Wade
that on last Saturday nitrlit two ne

portion of this ( Brooks) County, and
did take, steal and carry away about
800 pounds of pork, and about 76
pounds of lard and other tempting
articles, such as sausages etc.,amount
ing in value to over one hundred dol
lars. These bright scholars who had
but recently graduated under the j
able Faculty of rogues above
named in all the arts of villainy, j
made the trip, about fifteen miles and j
back, under the cover of night, hut to j
their chagrin and great surprise the i
Georgia boys proved more than a
match for them having, traveled the
whole way oil foot, but made good
time, recaptured the stolen articles,
and returned them to the lawful own
