We trust that condign punishment will be
.visited upott the heads of the perpetrators of
this fresh outrage upon the constitution and
the laws. We give the, following from two
leading. Journals, by which It Wjjl be seen
that there are some at least ih tho Empire
State, who take a proper view of this offence
against the rights of the South :
From the Albany Register.
There must and will come an end to these
things Rebellion ynust and will be repres
sed, and treason punished The whole.pow
er of the government, if necessary, must and
\vi|l be u(6d for that purpose. All good men
withstand by the authorities of their countiy.
and aid them in executing the laws. And
it wilt become the people of Syracuse to see
■to ft'that the traitors in their jtnifst are. nr-
'rest'ed and punished, that treason and rebel
lion are not victorious thbro again, and thus
wipe off something of the stain 'that now dis
figures the reputation of their, city.
-From tho Albahy Argus, •
This is the first-instance of forcible resis
tance to the exebtion of the laws or the Uni-,
ted States that has occurred in .this State —
It is the first instance that ah armed mob bos
attempted, with or without success, overawe
a judicial tribunal by violence, to trample on
"the IhW, and ninltreat and defy .the constitu
ted authorities of the land. It appears to
have been resorved for Syracuse, where ab-.
•olilionistn delights to hold its periodical or-
;gies, to exhibit, these first 'fruit teachings.

Mr. Editor ;—I wislt to enquire through

travel jree of chargo over the State road as a
part of ’thelr Salary, or are such liberties giv

larger faritilies than.others; and some ride on
the road perhaps ten-fold more than othets.

The Dbouoht. —The Pittsburgh Gazette
snys, all over that part of the country the
drought prevails with an intensity seldom
witnessed. The rivers are unprecedentedly
low, and brooks, fountains ana springs are
dried up. The Marshall fVa.) Advocate
says that much suffering for the want of wa
ter is felt in that' region. The Washington
(Pa.) Commpnwelthof tho Uth ult-contains
the most gloomy nccoupt-of the prevalence
of the drought in thut county, and nlso of
ptevaling sickness and - mortality. The eas
tern .portion of tliis county has beun, for seve
ral weeks, too, visited with prevailing, sick
ness and mortality, over almost any other
period; attributed to the unwholesome stale
of the waters. The Cincinnati Commercial

more the appearance of Arabian deserts then

mount of damage appears to have been done
by the Hies n6w burning in the woods of
Maine, and on the frontiers of New Bruns
wick, A letter from Chcrryfield snys:—The
whole country is burning up. Scarcely an

The Steamship Mississippi—A letter from
on board the steamship Mississippi, when she
wsaagiound near Smyrna, in describing the
efforts to got her off. which .went finally suc
cessful on the 25th of August, sayst
“The scene around us was truly novel.—
Five large steamers, three English nnd two
Austrian, and a French .brig-of-war," were
tugging at us. The beach under our bows

of comfortably sealing. 44,374 persons. At
the usual rates of admission, if all are full,
the enormous sum of $21,010 is nightly

Business for the South.—Last week,
Messrs. Harlan & Hollingsworth shipped
two steam engines from Wilmington, Del,,

ate erecting a. large number of factories and
machine shops-, end appear determined to be

This gentleman, whose appointment as a

we recently noticed, after being confined to
to bis bed, at-Willnid’s Hotel, in this city,
for a couple of weeks, Irotn an inflamed hand
proceeding from nn accidental injury, was
on Alpndqy called upon to submit to the
amputation of his lelt arin, midway between
the wrist and elbow. The operation wns
performed iri an admirable manner hy Dr.
Frederick May, assisted by Brs. Miller and
Stone. The patient was tinder the influence
of chloric ether, arid awoke without having
experienced any pain. We ore gratified to
learn that he is now considered io a fair way
for speedy restoration to'health.

The Comforts of an Editor
If he does not fill his paper with news of
importance, whether there benny or not, it
is condemned for not being what it purpots
to be—a newspaper.
If he does not at least fill one column eve
ry week with something laughable, his folid
is pronounced uninteresting.
If a public nuisance should exist, notice of
it would offend; and not to notice, it would
be censured
If he does not publish all the marriages
and deaths that occur in the world (or twenty
miles around, whether he hears of them or
not, not fit for and editor.
If every paper does not contain a goodly
number of‘Suicides, Horrible Murders nnd
Melancholy Accidents,’it is a dull unwel
come sheet.
If half the glorious transactions which pc-
cur-aro recorded, it is spurned as a vehicle of
calamities.
If his paper contains advertisements, the
general reader murmurs; if not .the man of
business will not patronize it.
If a dozen friends calf on him while he is
correcting his proof sheet, and one error es
capes detection, he is the biggest blunder
head in the world.
If he Cannot decypher all hicroglyhics

obscure ideas of the authors, (consequently
having to omi t their communications,)—“stop

Very Fat —A field slave in the South,

He took him but alive, held him under bin

feast in his imagination, Itis arms relaxed,
when off hoppedthe rabbit, and squatted at a

cool composure.
