ing the stream into Auburn, nr# successfully
'prosecuting their labors. We hear that up-
\vards of 500 men are employed in the con-
etruction of this work, which will be com
pleted in the Course of six weeks. The in
calculable advantages to be derived from - a
Copious supply.of water in this flourishing

Earth is now being carted tothe North Fork,
C Mile distant, and although transportation
down the precipitous hills which skirt the
river is tremendously expensive, still the

the State which so imperatively demands n
bounteous supply of water as Auburn, nnd
we are assured that the company which has
Invested its capital in this enterprise will be
abundantly remunerated for their outlay.
We learn from packers nnd miners from
the mining districts, that on all the bnrs of
the Ynba river, the yield is large, very large,
even upon such bars as were abandoned last

The Nevada Journal says—A correspon

.-says he found many of the mining companies
•doing well, tho Canal Compnny in pnrticuinr
'had averaged 35 lbs, of dust per day the
week before. The Ohio and Squad Coin
panics were also doing well. The Park’s
Bay Company will not be able to do much
until another year. At Long Bar, Parlon|p
Bar, Rose’s Bar, &c., miners were nil doing
■well. The Banks were good, paying fiotr:
$6 to $40 per day. There is much excite
ment now in that section respecting n rich

been taken many fine specimens of quartz,
I have not had time to visit the vein.
Tbe Affliction of Drafncii,
Of “ all the ills that human flesh is heir
to,” deafness stands pre eminent. At what
disadvantage is the unforlunnte suflerei pla
ced, when duly, business, oi pleasure, calls
him forth into the busy w< r d! H.,- f els him
self shut out from the full enjoyment ot life’s
pleasures, and as a wrecked nnd desolate
mariner on, the great sea of life. Allhough
alibis other faculties are unimpaired,—he
may enjoy glorious, rosy health, and may ho
possessed of a large share of this world’s
goods, yet for aJI this, he feels lonely’, sad
• end dispirited. The pleasant chit chat of the
’ social circle hath no charms for him; the
(friendly greeting, or the warm nnd cordial
welcome he hears not, the most bewitching
, strains of music fail to awaken one throb of
ipleasure; the most glorious martial strains,
•one throb of patriotic ardor. Amidst the
•glories and beauties of nature he hears not
ithe warblings of tbe feathered songsters, the
rsighing of the balmy zephyr as it plays among
the green leaves, or the music of the babbling
brooks as they run murmuring on tho great
.ocean. The ploughman’s whistle, the milk
maid’s song, the herdsman’s call, tbe lowing
•of the “ milky mothers,” the droning bum of
■the bee, fail alike to reach the dull, impervi
ous ear. From the concert nnd lecture
ruoms he is banished, and the thousand
means of enjoyment in this life are far be
yond his reach. He may witness nature in
■wildest and most terrific grandeur, stnnd
•■midst the hub-bub and din of city life, or

worlds,” still he feels ns if tho great globe

It is out of ihe question, at this stage of
