remarked In that city a few days since, that
Gen. Pierce would find more difficulty In
travelling through tho West nest fall than lias
riverbeen experienced by any other.inah.
"Ho will encounter,” said he, "nothing
but snags, shoals, narrows, and sawyers, In
bur rivers, and nothing but miry roads and
deep ravins on land. We claim the West,
the Northwest, tho Sonlhwcst and all the
fourt—In short, the Great West—to be in the
Unitod States, and thoreforo entitled to the
bam and paternal regard of the government j
and the man who Is opposed to our most vital
Interests can never receive our support."

Death of the Hon. Henry Clay—Public Hon
ors to his memory—Funeral Ceremonies—
Removal of tho body to Kentucky, 8to.
Washington, June 29.—At 17 minutes past
11 o’clock this morning tho ; venerublo patriot
and statesman, Henry Clay, of Kentucky,
breathed Ills last, at tho National Hotel in
this city, Hu had been for three days past
so extremely low ns to bo scarcely able to
converse with his son, or fats iiastur, the nev.
Dr, Butler, but no further visible change was
observed in hts condition until a few moments
before his duath. His physician, Dr. Hall,
was then summoned, but before he arrived
at his bed-sido he breathed his lost, no one
being present at the time except his son Titos.
It. Clay, Gov. Jones, of Teunessco, and Mr.
Calvert, tho proprietor of the hotel, who, with
his family, have been unremitting In their nt-
Hh last moments were calm nnd quiet, and
beseemed in full possession of all his fucul-
tim, apparently suffering but slightly. Ho
did not speak fur several hours faefure Ills
death, but his countenance indicated a happy
resignation and full knowledge of his condi
tion. He had long since made every prepa
ration for death, nnd given his son full in
structions ns to tha settlement of Ids worldly
affaire and the disposition of his body alter
death,
Ills last conversation on national affairs
took place somo days slnco, and will probably
bn made public by the few distinguished
friends that were present, alter his remains
have been consigned to the tomb. It will be
looked for with much Interest.
The announcement of the death of Mr. Clay
has thrown a gloom over the wholu city, and
the stores are clused nnd tho houses in the
principal streets are draped in mourning.

Ifr and the Departments and public offices were
i . 'instantly closed by order of the President.
j. ' The Cabinet held a meeting this afternoon,
and resulved upon the suspension ol all public
business until after the funeral. '
The funeral obsequies. I learn, will take
- placo In the Capitol on Friday, after which
the remains will be conveyed to the cars for
removal to Kentucky, according to the di
rections of thu deceased, by way of the Erie
Railroad.
Minute guns were fired by Cnpt. Bucklng-
I ham's Artillery Company, and also at thu
k- Navy Yard and Arsenal during thuafternonn.

Mayor Maury has summoned thu Councils

cents a bushel, but 46 to 60 may be consider

large holders do not seem anxious to suit.

A fine lot Is offered at 11 hog round, and will
bo taken by tradors. Wo quote 11 to 11*,

the Maine Law upon the public health is no
ticed by the Belfast (Me.) Journal, which
computes, from the books of the agent ap
pointed to sell liquor for medical purposes in
that town, that there are twenty-four thou
sand porsuns in the immediate vicinity who
are diseased.

Wo had in our city on Tuesday last a Troupe
h of Choctaw Indians, who for the amusement
P of the citizens, played a game of Ball in the

To those unacquainted with the Indian char-
-actor and amusements, there was something
novel and entertaining in the performance.—

OBITUARY.

Mrs. Marv A. Hill, consort of Mr. G. G.
Hill, and oldest daughter of Rev. J. E. Cook,
departed this life in Barbour county, Alabama,
on the 8th day of Juno, 1852, aged 22 years
and 5 months.
Her disease was dinrrhooca which termina
ted in inflftination of bowels.
For more than eight years she had been a
member of tho M. E. Church, nnd her father
is informed in a letter from her bereaved hus
band that sliu died as she had lived—that in
her last moments while many friends were
weeping around her, she bid thorn farewell
and told them she was going to heaven, and
that death had no terrors to her. Her little
infant daughter about 12 months old is ex
pected to die of tlic same disease. Mny our
Heavenly Father grant unto us grace to bear
our multiplied bureavements as wo should.

A RE now open, under the management
of Col. Joun N Young and Ladt, and
ready for the reception of visitors. There
hnvc been new improvements made to the
Springs—fire-places added to the Hotel, and
Cabins with fire-places, for Che accommoda
tion of families. The water of these Springs
have been recently analyzed by Professor
Means, of Oxford. So soon as he has time to
prepnre his analysis for publication, it wilt be
hifti 1 ** public. It may bo stated now, howev
er, that they contain Iron. Magnesia flnd Sul
phur in sufficient quantities for valuable medi
cinal purposes. They have already perform
ed some remarkable cur- s Judge Jambs M.
St'ULr.ouK. in the Spring of 1850, w'ns severe
ly attacked with Neuralgia. Every effort the
rno.-t skillful Physicians could make was made
to relieve him, but failed. Ills disease had
the typlicii symptoms, with ulcers on the
lungs, and every appearance of terminating
in the consumption. Ho was ndvised to Use
mineral waters, and in his feeble condition he
was taken to the Floyd Springs, where he re
mained but aeveu weeks and then left sound
and well. We refer to. Judge Spullock nnd
Drs. Douglas Sc Coleman, who will corrober-
ate the above statement of facts.
Another remarkuble cure was effected In
the cu.-e of Thomas Duke, a mechanic employ
ed to work at the Floyd Springs. He had
been afflicted for twenty yenrs with an erup
tion, or breaking out, nil over lti< body, lie
w'ns at work some two months, drank and
bathed in, the waters, nnd left the Springs en
tirely and radically cured. lie had applied
to n number of Physicians for relief, but he
found none from tny remedy until thrse wa
ters restored him to health*
The Waters of tlie Floyd Springs have
been found highly beneficial to children in
feeble health, deliente females and dyspeptic
persons. There is other pure nnd cool wutcr,
free from minerals nnd convenient for use.—
The mountain air iu salubrious and the see* e-
ry fine. And the Springs are only twelve
milea North of Rome nnd thirteen miles Sou’tty-
West of Calhoun. Passengers will be con
veyed Irom either place to the Springs for One
Dollar; from Rome, by Meters. Ramey &
Ransom.
