IT rul'd be pleasing to every American to j
I learn, that an union of sentiment now prevails!
I. * 1
; throughout these United States, but with few i
exceptions. We are of opinion, that many i
have heretofore contended merely for the fakej
!of contention, and thereby proilituted talents
, calculated for more nobler acts, When the j
call to arms was re-echoed around these (bores, |
j many of these chara&ers difearded all those j
! trifling differences, occafioncd by the heat of l
’ party, and Leccaie the general advocates for
the Rights of the American Nation.
The affair of the Chesapeake, has been
! viewed by all good Americans, as an outrage not
equaled in the annals of history—as an insult
. offered to their Flag—an insult, for which,
they are determined, at all hazards, that the
aggressors (hall make the necessary concessions to
1 our Government ; therefore, they have united
themselves into one common phalanx, for the
purpose of supporting any measures which Con
ga:-fs may adopt towards Grcat-Britaia.
i’ * 1
The condufl of Great-Brkain, towards
| this country, has been for years pad, nothing
1 more than a (cries cf insults—many of which,
of the blacked dye. Scarcely had the blood of a
fellow-citizen grown cold on the deck of an Ame
rican vessel, when we heard of the attack on the
Chesapeake—the engine of death was levelled at
| thebofoms of American citizens; ar. I alas! that
i engine was not levelled in vain ; it again can fed
the deck of an American (hip to be (uiud with
innocent blood.
i
If, Fellow-Citizens, after these repeated
oatrarcs, we can eradicate the (lain, and treat
the authors cf them with lenity, bccaufi Mr.
| Erfltin, the Bvitiih minister in this country, fays
they are unauthorised, we merit uot the Inde
pendence which we have to often beaded of.—
J If these Officers L tv? been adding without the
authority of the Bi itifh Government; it is high
| time that aflbp was put to their murderous career.
If the attack ca the Chesapeake had been the
Aft offence, we should have a icaitlsmce of -ex
!feufe in accrediting the declaration of Mr.
; Erfltin. If th'q repeated depredations, upon our
! rights, by the Bnt i'h- have not been authorised
| by the. British ‘Government, why have they not
! displaced the offenders, and rendered fatisfadlion
I to the Government of this country? If this
had been done, then the American People
would be juftifted in ring that the outrage
was unauthorised ; but, as it now (lands, were
are j'i(lifted in believing that it was author:Ld.
We cannot conclude these obfc:.‘va;.o::s,
without noticing the condiuff of our juvenile
countrymen—lt rauft be- grateful tg the feel
ings of a father, to obfenie his foil, but yet, as
it were an infant, convcrihnt with the princi
ples of ’7O. When the information of the at
tack on the Chesapeake, v.-as spread throughout
the land of Columbia, we are informed, that the
young men in different fedtions of the union, from
1C to 1S fleped forward with that eteulation, which
ought evei to diitiugirilh a Free and Indepen
dent People, and offered their services to pro
te-fl the Liberties of their Country.
We daily peruse the Resolutions which
have erneuated from the people in different parts
of these United States—all of which breathe *
the spirit of Freemen—all of which, are ealcula- ,
ted to evince the feelings of an injured People.
May Go.l grant a just People faccefs—may
He ever have a watchful eye over the deftiuies
of this, AMERICAN NATION.
AN appeal to the records of time, will (
convince every one who has-thrown off the iiabili- .
meats of that the Auiertcaa Govern-,
meat is the moft just one on earth—that it is 3
government which administers equal and exaS
justice to ad Nations —that it is a government,
which is calculated to afford to the oppressed or
other climes, that protection which never fails
to gladden their hearts. Contrail this picture
with the other exiiling governments of the
earth—how great will be the contrail ?
Although the -American Government so
‘juftly boalls of so many virtues, it has been
treated by that of Britain, as one of the moft
abandoned, as to the justness of this remark every
American bosom will tellify- We wi(h not to
criminate the Englilh Government, unjustly ;
but, so long as (lie tramples upon our rights, so
tong ought every America a deleft her cur fid
fyftetn of Government.
THE NAVY 1
MUCH clamor has been raised, by the
oppoiitioTi, ’about our Navy—many of the fid
lerai prints have, for fome time pail, teemed
; with abuse again ft our National Executive on
j account of the difpofirion of a part of the A
j mcrican Ndvy. We have often endeavored to
I refute the calumnies which have been levelled at
: the rulers cf our government; but, not having
j the law before us, passed the 3d March, 1801,
j which relates to the Navy, it would appear that
| .ve have been in fome mcafure, unfuccefiful in
the attempt; yet, We seize the follow idg with
avidity, as a further proof of the correctoefs of
our former assertions on this fubjeft—we throw
it into the balance, being conscious that every
man wlidfe mind i3 not (hackled by prejudice,
will give it its due weight.
The following will tend tc convince the
candid politician that the Executive, instead of
; depreciating the Navy have rendered it more
| refpe&able. If this be the fail, the authors of
; such base calumnies mu ft be covered with ftiatne
