Description of an Oriental Banquet..
An Ode in Arabic—-By a native of Damascus.
A literal translation of this Ode is given ly Sir
William Jones.
A paraphrastic translation.
Turn, generous youth, whom fecial joy delights,
A fcowr of bltfs our w indiring ft p invites;
Here mirth perpetual chirms the p'fling hour,
Aar! c;re erc'tukd flies our feftive bjiv r.
Here beauty {Lines, in varied charms cenfcfr,
Our ardent eyes proclaim to’ enraptur’d breast;
Cay, dofs thy mind to bliss supreme aspire ;
Enter, and r atiate every fond defrte.
JUfponfive to t!ie lyrift’s golden strain,
Our youthful hearts ail sordid thoughts disdain ;
Oh i !ift"n to the founds, how f.vect they flow,
Refine our j iys and banish cv’ry wts.
O’er tattling fla.vei here beauty’s daughters reign,
Each youth, enraptur'd wears love s easy chain ;
The devise wand’ring to this bleft abode,
Forgets religion, and refigis his God,
Behold a bower, with ticheft foilage Crown'd,
Whnfe dew-form’d brilliants dart their ray a around ;
Soft, panting zephyrs wliifper through the trees,
And tnuiky o lour* float upon the breeze.
Bright as the blazing wonder* of the sky,
Barth’s rival blc£T>nu fii the watld’ring eye ;
bVtrtft of fl iw’rs, the violet here appears ;
Hor languid eyes the while Narciffiis rears.
All hail ’ ye fragrant daughter of the spring !
Rouf’d by our charm; iny ravith'd foul takes wirg !
In cadi feft phut I trace fotne tender fair,
Scm; dear lov'd ebjetfl of my pouthful care.
Like IliuJa's checks, the purple violet bloom;,
TSte ref , like Mate, breathes divine perfumes ;
Oh I v/gri thou here to view this blifsfui fight,
Biw would thy bounding heart confefs delight ;
Pleas and wouidft tiou think my darling fair was nigh,
With her Lift, languishing, impafliou'd eye.
pair ny.nph, whole ebon trefles unconfi i'd
J[n wanton riog’ets waver to the wind ;
In the carnations hues nu-tliinks I trace
Refeatmcat mildly glow’ng iu her f„ce ;
Hers is each charm that ducks the blooming plaint,
And in her form divine perfection reigns.
In order rang'd the various vales lie,
Bright cs h:av‘n‘s orbi, with Ghin.'s richest dye ~
Haste to our banquet, fee the bowl's full brim,
Where frolic mirth end fmilng frieiidfhip farim ;
Quaff the pa c stream, the wide capacious bowl

ON this important fubjeft many books

The book now offered to the public has,
therefore, the great advantage c* having
befen written by a native American ol long

States, and who, for years pall, has turned
much ol his attention to this very intercO.
ing fubjeft. He is very fang nine that his
book wiil prove exceedingly ufeful to all
families, but more especially to thole liv
ing in frattered neighbcurbcods, where
regular medical a’tendance cannot eaiiiy be
ibtained. For the use oi families thus
unfortunately circnmflanced, the author
has prepared his Planter’s and Mariner’s
Medical Companion, which treats, in the
inert clear and concise manner, almost ev
e y disease to which the human body is li
bie, with its name ,symtoms, causes, regi
men, cure, and means of pretention To
which are subjoined, a treatise on the dis
eases peculiar to women and chrildren ;
and.a diflertstion on such cases as general
ly occur inSurgery ; with a Difpenfatory,
thewing how to prepare the tnoll ufefu!
family medicines, with their proper doses ;
and a Diftionary, explaining the technical
terms used in this work. With such a
guide as this, a country gentleman may be
enabled to m<et a difeale in the firft nto-’

Itcian cannot readily be had, may be made
