It clearly appeared on the trial, that the pri
soner was born in London—was a volunteer in
the service—had been some years in h. ms.
I Leopard, but last in the Halifax. Tlifit, on the
i 7th oi March last, the ship being then in Karnp
: ton Roads, the prisoner was sent with four other
men, under a petty officer,- in a jolly boat, to
weigh a hedge anchor ; when, tailing advan
tage of the dusk of the evening, the men muti
nied upon the officer, and some of them threat
ened to murder him ; but the rest interfering,
they desisted—acd landing at ScwoU’s point,
the five made their escape, A few days after,
the deserters were seen parading the streets of
Norfolk, in triumph, under the American flag.

by Lord Townsend, asserted that ! e had no in
tention of deserting, but was compelled byl the

The British frigate Jason, and the brig Colum
bine, went to sen on Wednesday, hive seamen
deserted from the former on ’Tuesday evening. A
Swedish seaman , who also had deserted from the
Jason, teas picked up by the sloop Gazette, from
Charleston, and brought to tins port, after he had
swam two miles.
