TJi£ MOTHER'S DIRGE .
B** WILLI AH CARSV.
■ FR OM luhlllngJtreame, or springs tbdi rise
[n moihtain grot, or willowy vale,
Jjjrirg water, while I close these eyes,
And kiss these tips so cold and pale,
From tufted grove and shadowy glen,
Untrodden by the feet of men,
From sedgy banks and fragrant fields,
Ering every flower that/ nature yields }
And scatter every breathing street,
On lov'd Maria's winding sheet .
■ £!;/; spirit, newly freedfrom pain,
While o'er thy faded cheek I bend,
fidov'd, and watch'd, and wept, in van’,
A moment more tly fight impend.
Sc sold, while hovering on thy wing,
With water from the bubbling spy dg
£ wtfh thy limit. I spread thy bier ;
And lay thee down, with many a tear,
CUd in thy fir and of spotifs white,
Jo slumber through thy weary night.
Jh- tender smile, ihy soothing voice ,
Thy playful innocence, no more
%hy fond, fond Mother, shall rejoice :
Jhy little dreams of joy are o'er.
Cf all the graces of thy mind,
IJo token wilt thou leave behind }
J-Jo trace of thee will soon remain,
Sut in this breast a Mother's pain ;
A mossy grave } an humble sine,
