While moral/‘ ts iti vain have told
How sordid is the love of gold
IVhich th-.y call fitly trash ;
Thou f ranger to these ey es of mine,
Tea thousand virtues f ill arc thine,
Thou all sufficient Cash !
Tho* thy intrinsic worth he small,
Tit, money, thou art all in ad —
Tho’ transient as r fnjh,
In passing juf from hand to hand,
The. earth is at thy sole ccmmanJ—
It gravitates to Cash.
■'Possess’d of the, we may defy
Hot death itself —but very nigh,
For when the tyrant’s lasi.,
Is felt ( and ah ’t-usas felt by me)
It did—it will the vassal free —.
Then who despises Cash ?
By nature void cf ev’ry grace,
If thou hast ( reader ! %>;i j thy face)
Bit this Cos tin. iIC ‘ll? CIS/) i
*Twill whiten and improve the Jkin —
Thy monkey-note, thy ehtehs, thy chin ,
Are beautified by Cash,
And tho’ your mertrd povdrs he We cl,
(To you who money heve I speak')
Ne'er fair to cut a dash e
■ For men of genius and of sense,
■Jf poor, will male a poor defence
Against the nan of Cash.
Or, should you for the basest crimes,
Become indiSedfifty times,
This settles all the hash ;
For bills which have the poor no hobs
2 escape the dungeon, or the rope,
Arc conceal'd ali by Cash.
- Nay ‘twill be found that money -art
Tbs graveling least transform to man,
Tho * dljf’rent natures clash ;
For ’tis a fad beyond dispute,
The miser's far beneath the orate—
A bump of living Cash.
And yet vclal crouds r found him wait—
. Behold him cloth'd in power and state —-
The garter, star and sash ;
Fools fly before the potent nod
Os him whose fiffb, whose soul, whose Cod,
Whose heaven itself is Cash-
But, sons cf Plains, lest you go
To those infernal mines below.
Where teeth are said to gnash,
(dive to the needy—zbribe the grave—
C, if you wish year souls to save,
Be gen’ reus of your Cash.
