BOSTON, September 2.1.
Halifax Court-M'ar:ini. —The mock trial, but
aftual murder of John W ilfau, alias Jenkin Rat
joid, at Halifax, prefcnts circumstances mortify
ing to the hirelings of Britain, and the federal
party in this town. They have rcpitefented the
men takSn from the CSefapeakp to be the iden
tical deserters from the frigate Halifax, while
at Norfolk ; and that osfihmodqre Barron knew
them to be on hoaro, t,rough ho returnee. an c
vafive anfwe? to the enquiry of capt. Ham
pbries. They have also asserted, that t.'io Pre
sident cletigned'y slated, that the men claimed
bv the Britiih consul as deserters from the Hali
fax, Were native Americans, when in fail they
were Englilhnicn. Tliefe (T rtions are proved
to be erroneous, by the report of the trial.
The men mentioned m Adapt** Berkley’s or
ders to have been on board the Chcfnpeake, were
ailed-red to be deserters from the Beilona, Bell
id?, Triumph, CbichelUr, Halifax and Zenobi i.
The an fiver of cammcdore Barron was, that he
knew'cf no men of fuck deicriptions to be on
board tbs Chesapeake.
The men demanded by Lord Townfen J, thro’
the Britiih consul at Norfolk, as Alerters from
the Halifax, were named Aill, North Hubert
and Rat feed , those taken by capt. Humphries
from the Chesapeake, were named Story, Mar
t's War; and Wilson. The three firft are ac
knowledged by the Britiih to be deserters from
the Melarnpus ; and we know they were taken
by thatvefli.l from the American brig Neptune,
capt. Crafts, of New-York.
Retford, who is said to have deserted from;
the Hahfax, enteied under the name of Willfon.
Lord Townsend declares, that when he visited
the Chesapeake’s rendezvous at Norfolk he did
rot fee him, nor did any f the Leopard’s crew
fecogzie him, though it :r ibid he formerly be
longed to that !bip.
When a man therefore was not recognl -red by
his fbiprnates, how could it be expedit'd ov sup
poled, Com. Barron (hon'd Itaotv he was.a. deleft
<r; End v.'i.. ■; is.the evidence to tVkft tociats the
charge so often made againil him ?
It appears even from this document, that ti:;
ren claimed by the Britiih consul as defer, err,
fiom the Halifax, and who as the Prdldent or •
the Pasted Stales affirms, I! had been proved to
be native Americans/’ were not o:i board the
Chesapeake, except Ratforcl, who adorned ano
ther name; and it has not been fahsfaclorili
proved that he was an Englifhrnan. If clearly
appears, then, that Com. Barron avoided the en-
Lhnents offuch of the deserters from the Hali
fax, as had been either recognized or claimed by
their officers, and that there was no -cause for tin
£.ofs attack on our National Sovereignty.
Hence, then, the outrage mult be viewed by
*d’rue Americans as an unprovoked and wanton
ditplay of that arrogance and cupidity which is
so peculiar to'the Britiih nation; a chara&ei ‘
wtuch has had a tendency to deprive them <•{
tie confidence, friend (hip and refpeft cf the
gitatefl portion of Europe,- and is rapidly verging
tbero to tiie (hades of run and debasement, if
net of annihilation.

ON Tuelday next, the 20th instant,
yew will again be called upon to Elefl your
-COUNTY OFFICERS. This is nn event in
; which each individual ought to feel highly ir.te
refted, as its termination will be very important to j
the interest of the County—for, if we do not elefl 1
good, honed, uptight and sober men, who have t
we to blame but ourfclvcs ?
It is in our power, fellow-citizens, to place
in public trad men of unimpeachable integrity ;
m- 1 of found political principles. We observe !
among the candidates so- the OCdc* of County ‘
Sheriff, the name cf JOHN EPPINGER—
t’ais gentleman is well known to you ; his capa
bility to execute the duties of the office, his!
high {landing in this coummunity, the fonndnrfs
o( his political tenets, cannot be doubted by his
rr.oft inveterate fees.
Fellow-Citizens l Lei us not be deceived:
on the approaching event ; b'.icve not the many]
reports which have been set adrift to injure the
election of Eppinger—reports cunningly circu
lated tlirough private circles—-not publicly 1
brought forward, that he might have an oppor
tunity of refuting the base calumnies. Believe
them not, and as you value the bed interell of
your county, give John Eppinger your flip
port.

Fy tie arrival of the ship Artie, yesterday,

this report entitled to little credit.]
“ Upwards of eighty Danish, and a number of
Portuguese ties self, art now embargoed in this
port.
j “ Troops are daily marching through this place
. on their way to Portugal, which the French alrea

“ It is this day reported that the English troops
have FtiiFsned possession of Elsineur. The Em

French troops to assil the Danes.
<£ 1 have little to add, only that war is declar

The (hip Union, Smith, left Dublin on the
10th Sept. By this arrival we have been favor
ed with a Dutch paper of the 2d Sept, it con
i tains, however, but few articles of any interest.
J A lew days before capt. Smith failed he
( read in the papers, an account of the arrival of
the United States schooner Revenge, at Fa!-

but three days for its confideretion, An em
