1 IBImANCBJOL r AND DISTRESSING.
On Monday, at 12 o’clock, the house ft).mer-
Iy belonging to Mrs Carter, in this town, was
difeovered to be on fire. The ccrpfe of Mr.
William Stak rr.D, the more recent proprie
tor, had not been sent to its earthy home, when
a lick .id mourning family were driven by a
.new cakmkv, with the remains of a parent and
a huiband, from the solitude .of their furrows, to
weep under the next hospitable roof, over their
complicated misfortunes.
The’home vvasjan an and aft rong
wind, from the north-weft blew the flames into
.tilebody of the town In the cowife of a few
hours three of the belt improved fqnares, with
parts of two others, were ft ripped of-‘all their
improvements. The rapidity of the fire, in the
horrors of its dc-vaftntion through homes highly
(ir.-.bufTiole from the operation of the late drou’t
the te alternation that prevailed deilroymg con
cert and pirfence of mind, in mod cf those who]
were Lborioufty aßivc, the incompetency of the
engines to perform their offices with full efteß,
prevented many of the fufferers from saving a
great.proportion of their moveable property. —
The upper Tobacco’ Ware-houses, with all the
Tobacco stored, were consumed. A flake cf
burning matter was thrown on the roof of the
Bank-hcinfe, which flood at the dßanee of two
Freds from the general conflagration, and so
furious was the progress of the flame that all the
books, papers, and money in the vaults were, oi
necessity, exposed, during the whole of the fire,’
to its aft ion. but have fi nee been recovered en
tire. Hsopiiy no human life was left.
i iiis awfully atth&mg event has bereft many
families, feme in disease, at the entrance of win
ter, of their only flicker, and of their all. The
woes of the comfortlefs and of the fufferingy
which pervades a great part of Fredericksburg,
calls aloud for contribution from the opulent.
