SONNET TO E....
YE lips, my theme of endless praise,
Soft as the velvet that arravs
Her (lender waist—adieu !
Keav'n’s fine ft work, and purest mould,
Like op’ning roses to be hold,
And hung with fweer dew.
Oh ! could I taste the ne&ar there,
And after live, ’twould heal the care
Her dtrt : ng eye have giv’n ;
As Persians, on the barren plain,
Scorch’d by their fun, ador’d in vain,
Are cheer’d by showers from heav’n.

*’ The lateattrocious and piratical decree
ol Bonaparte is a complete comment on
the writings ol Duane, for fotne time palt,
particularly on those accursed pieces enti
tled “ Politics for Farmers.” The Ame
rican that would now presume to deny
that ibis man is an agent of the tyrant of
France, ought to be held up as an objeft of
general lulpicion.-—The finking coinci
dence between this outrageous attack upon
the very vitals of our country, and the
poisonous doftrines of the Aurora in pre-,
paring the preponderating interest, (the a
griculiuralifts) of the United States, for
their servile reception, is too obvious to
c cape the mol unthinking. It cannot
now be denied that there was a preconcert,
ed plan between Duane and bis Galtc m 4S .
ters to prepare the public mind of this
country to swallow without a murmer.this
deleterous pill ; this direst stab at our high,
est interest. It Congress does not show a
becoming spirit on tt is occasion, then in.
deed have the execrable agents of Napoleon
but too fatally fucceedcd, in fcatteiing tk e
fire brands ol diflention and luring us into
their fell snares. It would leem that th
Aurora forefaw, or rather was foretold of
these present alarming measures of the
Emperor of France against this country,
a puto keep down our spirit, and lay pros,
trate, our energies, he has lor fome time
pall been sedulously and wickedly employ,
and in making tbe farmers feel hoftiliiy tu
their brethren of tbe cities ; driving to
persuade them that their interests were dis.
linft from these of the merchants; as if
what deeply affefted the one, did not di.
rcftlv injury the other.”
