■ Sir William Berkely, when
■overnor of Virginia, in 1671,
■ a letter to the lords of the
■oimfiittee of the colonies, af.
I, r itatitig that there Were
■ear fO,OOO perlons in the
■olony ; adds, “ I thank God
■ere are no free f'choois, nor
■rinting, and I hope we (hall
■ot have them these hundred
■ears,; for learning has brot’
■fabedience and heres., and
■ects into the world, and print,
■nr has divulged them and li
■eh against the government.
Kod keep us from both.”
| From the conduct of the a*
■illocrats of the present day,
In waging war against t e
Irefles friendly to liberty’, See.
Ire may fairly infer that the
■entiments of Berkley are ftiii
■nertfhe 1 by two many.
I (If we could believe in the
Inetempfycosis, we could find
la body which appears to po!.
less a spirit as well as that of
■erkely ; and in a governnatai
Ichair too.) Aurora.
un Englifk writer gives the
I following account of the drtfs
I of the ladies during the lajl
1 tentury.
I 1700-. All going masked
Ito the theatres nothing was
lleen.
1727--- —The malfe being
[aride--.the face appeared.
I 1760 —The peticoats were
shortened—and half the leg
appeared.
1795 —The handkerchief be
ing removed—the bread and
neck appeared.
1796-— The fleevea being
Ihortened— p -lhe elbow and
half the uper joint of the arm
appeared.
Now fuppoiing the super.
fices of the human body to be
ten square feet, the nakeu
parts will be nearly five feet
at this time ; consequently,
fliould they persevere in un
covering tn an equal ratio, tn
about ninety years they will
have left upon their bodies lit
tle more than a pair of /lock*
ings ; this will appear by the
rules of proportion. From the
above data it is evident, that
the ideas of delicacy entertain
ed byßritifh ladies is approxi
mating in a certain ratio to that
of ancient Sparta ; or, pernap>,
indeed, to their own ancestors,
the Britons . and from these
premiles it may be no unwar
rantable aflertion, that in nine
ty years there will be little
smuggling of Flanders lace 01
other (lippery, but their beau
tiful {kins may again be dyed
with wood, 8c have the fig ures
ofthe heavenly bodies cut or
tattooned upon them.
