For Publishing by Subscription,
The Official Letters
or TMR
Military and Naval Officers of the Unit
ed States, during the l*'ar with Great
Britain, in the years 1812. 13, J4. 15,
interspersed unto a few Letters of the
Pritich Officers,,and some valuable of
ficial Documents elucidating the Hislo-
ry of that period.
OTTIHK work will commence with the Presi
wJL dent's Message to Congress, June 1, 1812,
the Report of the Committee of Foreign Rela
tions, and the President's Proclamation an.
nounring the declaration of war. Then will
follow, in succession, the letter* of our officers,
from the comnienctrneut to the termination of
the war.
In gathering and collating those letters for
publication, the Editor's motive is, to preserve
them to the rising and to the future generations.
He lias frequently regret’ed, with his Cirtehipo-
rariea, the impracticability of obtaining access
to the letters of the officers of our Involution,
Pud few men "how living, it is preatitned, have
had the pU-asura of perusing them all The
proposed publication will preserve from a simi
lar fate, the official letters of our officers during
the late war, ;uid will furnish an opportunity
to the young men of America, now advanced
and a Ivancing to manhood, of perusing them }
they will there see their fathem, ih. \ brutheis,
their relations, and their friends, iu their true
colors. •
The names of those valuable men who have
shed their bfood in the gene al d-fence, in
whatsoever station, ought to'be inscribed on
the roll .of fame, held up to general imitation,
and bam It d down to posterity for their. Admira
tion. The highest honors are due to those
whose bravery repelled the sax age and the ci-
vihaed foe, both by sea ami land j whose un-
daunted valour and heroism was never excel
led iu the proudest days ot the ancient repub
lics. To tiie junior officers of tin- army and
navy, this book will prove an excellent manual
and model fur imitation.
It is presumed tbe head of each family in the
country will be gratified in pt'a-essing a copy of
this'work, m t merely as a book ot reference,
but a source of pleasure for recitation to their
children at their fire sides.
