Military and Naval Officers of the Unit

Uritain, in the years 181 id, 13, 14, 15,
interspersed wito a few Letters of the
lintich Officers, aud some valuable of
ficial Documents elucidating the llisto
ry of that period.
QTpMKwork will commence with the Preai.

the Report of the Commit'ee of Foreign Rela
tion*, and the President's Proclamation an
nouncing the declaration of war. Then will
follow, in succession, the letter* of our officers,
from the commencement to the termination of
the war.
In gathering and collating those Letter* for
publication, tlie Jiditor** motive is, to preserve
them to the rising and to the future generations.
He has frequently regretted, with Ins cbtempo-
rurics, the impracticability of obtaining access
to the letters of the officers of our Revolution,
and few men now living, it is presumed, have
had the pleasure of perusing them all The
J imposed publication will preserve from ssimi-
ar late, the official letters of our officers during
the Ute wsr, and will furnish an opportunity
to the young men of America, now advanced
and advancing to manhood, of perusing them ;
they will there see tlicf(fathers, their brothers,
their relations, and their friends, in their true
colors.
The names of those valuable men who have
shed their blood In the genet si defence, in
whatsoever station, ought to be inscribed on
the roll of fume, held up to general inmation,
and handed down to posterity for their adiiura
tion. The highest honors are due to tlioae
whose bravery repelled the savage and the ci
vilised foe, both by sea and laud ; whoae mi.
daunted valour and heroism w as never excel
led in the proudest dsy* ol the h icient repub
lics. To the junior officer* of the uimy and
navy, this book will prove su excellent manual
and model for imitation.
It is presumed the head of each family in the,
country will be gratified in fioaseasing a copy of
th a work, n«t merely as a book of reference,
but a source of pleanure for recitation to their
children at their fire sides.
