PROPOSALS,
For publishing of .4 HIE ViY, in the State nf Geor
gia, a new itoektv paper, o he entitled the
ATHENE UM.
I N* commuiutv *»* !• n enm.-1, and w here a dis
position to patrouizi’ Literature and Science
is extensively manifested, the importance ofa
well conducted newspaper, must, of necessity,
be generully understood; and among a reading
people, such a paper cun hardly fail of being ac
ceptable. Tha| the Adieneuin will be a paper
of this description, it might perhaps be deemed
presumptuous to assert: but sn far as the efforts
ofthe editor can render it useful—so far as per
severing industry mid attention can insure sue-
cess, to his undertaking— so far, at least, the sub
scriber can pledge himself, that he will endeavor
to render his paper worthy the attention of its
supporters.
Tho growing importance of Aihens, where
the flourising University ofthe State is located,
and aurniunilcd, as it is, hy an intelligent at i
wealthy neighborhood, has induced a belief that
no pluce in the upper country presented a move
inviting opening for the establishing anew
weekly paper—and the influence of this opin
ion bus led to the present proposals, and tile
subscriber flutters h maelf, that# in the liberal
patronage of an enlightened community, his un
dertaking wilhoctive an approving sanction.—
And while his own exertions wdl be oersever-
ingly employed to furnish a paper which shall
be useful to his Kuppo ters, he will venture to
hope that his columns may be diversified by the
decisional communicators of such scientific and
literary friends as ma> be disposed, through
this medium, to aid him, and benefit the com
munity.
To make his paper useful, will be the propri
etor’s principal am; and in the furtherance of
this object, he will endeavor to give the earliest
foreign and domestic intelligence, with such
portions of Congressional matter, when the Nu-
tit nal Legislature are in session, as his limits will
allow—together with such original oi selected
political communications, or moral essays, as
have the public good in view, and are free from
peiaooaftiea, but t • tutides intended merely to
gratify revengeful feelings, and to provoke or
continue personal contests, no place will be giv
en. And though in judging ot these the editor
may occasionally en, it is to be hoped that no
improper motive* may be supposed to influence
his decision, inasmuch as the right of rejecting,
as well ns of insetting communications, must be
reserved to himself.
A* an editor, ir will be Ids interest—as it-will
he, under all circumstances, his inclination—to
give general satisfaction. From the line of im
partial duty, he will endeavor not to depart; and
none shall have cause to accuse him of volunta
rily giving a needless offence to a single indi
vidual.
It will scarcely be necessary to say, (hat the
political complexion of the Atheneum will be
Republican. In this age of light andknowlegc,
in this country, none other ought to ask, or
could be expected to receive, public patronage.
CONDITIONS.
The Atheneum will be published once a week
on a super nn al sheet, and delivered to subscri
bers, or forwarded by mail, at Three Dollars a
year, payable in advance, or Four Dollars, if pay
ment is deferred to the end ofthe year.
All subscriptions will be for one year at least,
and till a discontinuance is directed. No paper
discontinued, except al the option of the editor,.
until all dues are paid.
Advertisements will be inserted at the usual
rates.
(Xj* Persons disposed to encourage the under-
taking, are requested to signify the same by the
first of September, as it is contemplated to issue
the first number early in that month.
