The subscriber respectfully submits to the pub
lic the following
PROPOSALS,
For publishing at ATHENS, in the State of Ogor-
gin, a new weekly paper, to be entitled the
ATHENEUM.
I N a community it Freemen, and where a dis
position to patronize Literature und Science
is extensively marlifested, the importance ofa
well conducted newspaper, must, of necessity,
he generally understood ; and among a reading
people, such a paper can hardly fail of being ac
ceptable. That the Ajheneum will be a paper
ofthis description, it might perhaps be deemed
presumptuous to assert: but so far as the efforts
of the editor can render it useful—so fur us per*
severing industry ami attention can insure suc
cess to his undertaking- so fur, at least, the sub<
sciiber cun pledge himself, that he will endeavor
to render his paper worthy the attention of Us
supporters.
. The growing importance of Athens, where
the (lourising University of the State is located,
und surrounded, as it is, by an intelligent and
wealthy neighborhood, has induced a belief that
no place in the upper country presented a more
inviting opening for the establishing a new
weekly paper—and the influence of this opin
ion hub led to the present proposals, and the
subscriber flatters h inself, that, in the liberal
patronage of an enlightened community, his un
dertaking will receive an approving sanction.—
And while his own exertions Will be persever-
iugly employed to furnish a paper which shall
be useful to his supporters, he will venture to
hope that his columns may be diversified by the
occasional communications of such scientific and
literary friends as may be disposed, through
this medium, to aid him, and benefit the com-
nuinity.
To make his paper useful, will be the propri
dor's principal mm; and in the furtherance of
this object, he will endeavor to give the earliest
foreign and domestic intelligence, with such
portions of Congressional matter, when the Na
tional Legislature are m session, as his limits will
allow—together with such original or selected
political communications or moral eBSuys, as
have the public good-iq'view, and are free from
personalities, but t» articles intended merely to
gi atify revengeful feelings, and to provoke or
continue personal contests, no place will be giv
en. And though in judging of these the editor
mny occasional!) err, it is to be hoped that no
improper motives may be supposed to influence
his decision, inasmuch as the right of rejecting,
as well as of inserting communications, must be
reserved to himself.
As an editor, it will be his interest—as it will
be, under all circumstances, his inclination—to
give general satisfaction. From the line of im
partial luty, lie will endeavor pot to depart; and
none shall have cause to accuse him of volunta
rily giving a needless offence to a single indi
vidual.
It will scarcely be necessary to, say, t that the
political complexion of the Athepeum will be
Republican. In this age of light and know lege,
in this country, none other ought to ask, or
could be expected to receive, public patronage.
CONDITIONS.
The Atheneum will be published once a week
on a super-royal sheet, and delivered to subscri*
hers, or forwarded by mail, at Three Dollars a
year, payable in advance, or Four Dollars, if pay
ment is deferred to the end of the year.
All subscriptions will be for one year at least,
and till a discontinuance is directed. No paper
discontinued, except at the option of the editor,
until all dues are paid.
Advertisements will be inserted at the usual
rates.
(O’ Persons disposed to encourage the under
taking, are requested to signify the same by the
first of September, as it is contemplated to issue
the first number early in that month.
