The London Courier of the 90th June,
complains heavily of the application of the
East India Cempany Directors, to the
British Ministry, fur a reduction of the
duties on the East India Sugars. « The
measure,” says tho Courier, •< has ex
pressly in view the ruin of our West In
dia Islands. Mr. P. Moore mentioned
that sugar could be raised in the East
by/refilleu at "tie half-penny per pound,
which in the West produced by slaves,
cost five pence half penny. The measure
is utged by two parties ; one, those who
desire the abolition of slavery in the W.
Indies; the other, the fteo traders to the
East Indies, whuse object is to take from
the Well, a great commodity in which
they may deal.”
The Courier contends that the Weat
Indies are to be considered us a more cer
tain and valuable possession for Great
Britain than tho East. “India maybe
lost by a war with France and other Eu
ropean powera, or by an attack from Rus-
liu, and it is still more iu danger from an
explosion among the natives ; whereas
the West Indies are in no such danger
while the Britlt navy prevails. Suppose
Jamaica Inst, either by an attack of a fo.
reign enemy, or an insurrection of the
negroes, E .gland could speedily recover
it it her navy predominates on the ocean.
Thus a great source of revenue (about 8
millions per annum,) and a great market
far her manufactures are secured to her."
These views are not without interest for

“I huve to inform you of the partial failure of
the crop of Uaw Silk, which has caused an ad
vance of 12 to 15 per cent. In Languedoc the
crop will be 5-8, in Piedmont 2-3ds, and in ma
ny parts ol Italy the failure has been pretty ex
tensive. Reports of this kind are frequently
circulated, but you may rely on the above state
ment.
Silk is now held at advance of from 12 to 15
J ier cent and every prospect of a fu thcr rise,
t haa made considerable stir in the inarketn,
There are, however, but few manufacturers ut
present who have ready made articles of silk in
their warehouses that pretend to an advance on
them i but they cannot be mude at their form
er prices.
Some few orders have been given in antici
pation of the accustomed demand s but few pur

afow days past, and the European orders for
the season being nearly settled, we may look
for a further decline in price. The coming
crop has every appearance of abundance, and
is in a great state of forwardness.
Pork, Mackerel and Codfish are in good de

is dull, owing to the large quantities of native
provisions, which supercedes the consumption
of it, but increases the demand for salted provi
sions, with which they are used.
