I.d Gunyrn, we have received from our
nMMitive correspondent at that place the
following important jltitelliiter.ee, Our
papers supplied by the same arrival con
tain nothing of general interest, being
principally filled with details of the war
rot of sufficient importance to be noticed.
Among the ucts of the Colombian Cong, ess
we reinork with gratification an act ex
empting the Indians from the degrading
f tribute and disqualifications to which they
were subjected under the Spanish Go
vernment, and proclaiming their equal
pur'icipatinn in all the riglita of tha other
citizen* of the republic.
La (iunyra, July 23.—“ Sir, ! wrote
you pur the American biig Georgetown
Packet, accompanying my letter with a
file ol newspapers; but since the sailing nf
that vessel, we have received certain tnfor-
tnntion here of her cuplure by some of the
Spanish privateers which are cruising near
Puerto Hico, that being the course taken
l by vessels going from hence to the Unit-
’ ed States, is it possible that the govern
ment ot the United States ore so little
aware of the importance of the great and
daily growing commerce carried on by
its citizens with this country, as nut to
take some efficient mensuccs for its pro
tection? One or two of the vessels which
have long been, I may say uselessly em-
i ployed on the Coast of Africa, would com
pletely secure American vessels from
capture. 1 really think this is a subject
calling for immediate attention, aa the
•vil is growing every dny, there tjeing
now fifed uut at Puerto Rico, no leas than
five, privateers, and many others are soon
expected to make their appearance.
"Knim Mtfi’ncaiho we have no very late
intelligence ; the last we had assures us
of the speedy prospect of the annihilation
of the Spanish force in the province of
Coro.
» Puerto Cahcllo is still closely block
aded and besieged—the outer town is tuid
in ruins by our artillery, and the inner
town has not shored a much better fate,
lave the almost impregnable fortress of
fian Philipe, to which all the Spanish
troops ami a lew remaining individuals
have retired. The Spaniuriia have occa-

FROM oliittALTAR.
By the ship Ulenthnrii, from Gibraltar,
We have received papers uf tlmt place to
the 2!)'Ii June. Their contents, however,
ai e mn'very important.
The Gibraltar Chronicle o n ;,-ns h i
t wee of the King of Spain to the ad-
an ot the Cories, in which his Majesty
»ays, he “ trusts tranquillity will be re
stored by the natural means at the dispo*
gal ol government, without resorting to
ex raoidtnary measures, which are but
Seldom necessary, -often dangerous, and
at all times demonstrate the inefficiency
and impotence of the established laws.”
Ills Majesty says “ all his rights and du
ties arc comprehended in this general ba
sis ; anil, true to the discharge of an su-
cred an obligation, he will Omit nn effiirt,
no sacrifice,in order that the Constitution
al Throne may appear, in the eyes of the
mf ion, a point uf re union for all good
Spaniards. In vain it will be attempted
to confound the standard of loyalty • with
fbe banners of rebellion: the Spaniard*,
his Majesty is confidant, will distinguish
i tlm voice of their monarch, and inexorable
j justice will bring hack to the pnth ot duty
’those who persist in their criminal abera-
lions. Ills Majesty, iu conclusion, con
gratulates himself, that when the spirit of
sedition is so busv among the simple and
credulous, the address should have afford*
etl him so public and so solemn an occa
sion to renew tho expression bf his wish,
that the nation may consider the rights of
the throne us the pledge uf her own lib
«rty and glory.”
The Hpanish Cortes have approved
most of the measures proposed by their
special committee, on the political state
of the kingdom. The committee recom
mended the accelerating, for the purpose
of promoting public enthusiasm, dramatic
perlormances, songs, Ike.; to multiply
primary schools; to construct public
\wmks; to find employ for the laboring
class; to punish bishops and other eccle
aiastical superiors who oppose the consol
idation of the new system, and even to
banish them from their kingdom, and to
seize their temporalities, if they do not
publish pastoral letters, showing the con
fomiity ot the constitution with the Cath
•lie religion.
A motion for suppressing all the reli
gious orders in the monarchy, was read a
first time in the silling of the 19th June.
Ii was decreed two days before, that the
Monks of the Convent of Guadeloupe,
which was looked upon as the cradle ot
rebellion in Catalonia, should be transfer
red toother convents.
The Cortes have recommended to gov
eminent a memorial ol a physician ol Ma
drill, who offers to prove, that the yellow
fever it not contagious.—-Yut Mv.
The Dandies complain much of the hot
weather; they say it prevents the irAis-
leers sticking to their cheeks. They com
plain al-o that it makes their stays uocom-
»r table.

This establishment of the United Nutea
which cannot be separated from the ge
neral principle* of engineering it'd the
art of defence, has already produced a
number ol tho most valuable surveys. The
corps of topographical engineers ate in
constant employment—in the smith and
in thu east, uniter the general direction of
the engineer’s department; and embraces
a perfect recotinoisance from Passamip
quuddy to the Sabine, or a general cm
niinalion and particular survey of all tho
harbours and inlets, between those points;
at tho same time uniting the determina
tion! uf land positions, and the deptlia of
water, aa well fur military as for commer
ciuI purposes. -
We ure not certain that we canenume-
rote all that has been performed already,
but we cun give a sufficient sketch tu
shew the value, though it is not easy to
convey an idea of the ’about nnr the pa
tience nnd skill required to execute them;
nsr is the execution inferior to such
wurks in any country, as those who have
had the satisfaction of visiting the topo-
griptiical department of Washington, un
der the superintendance of that ingenious
and imletatigable officer, Major Ruber
dcau, can testify.
Surveys hsve been made of the harbour
