*Wk following Ticket for
Members uf the legislature y recommended to
tho support uf the voters of Chatham county.—
In lit formation, no reference has been made to
the mere aooidents of birth t no illiberal feeling
has been indulged, hnd no eoctional jealousy hat
bad h.fttience. Tho single notice which
prompted tu it, which has been an honest re
gard to the common good of all i and the only
object, looked to, was the selection of those
whose integrity, whose talents, devotedneaa to
country, und liberality of feeling would ensure
us vigilapt Kuurdixna and efficient promoters of
our interests. On it Is the name of no one
who, consc ous of inferiority, meanly dreads, on
his "own toil," to be towered above by the un
friended stranger. Such a one brands himaelf
with inciiparity for the duties fie would pre-
aumpluoiuly assume, and by his own distrust,
forbids the confidence of Ins fellow citizens.—
Nor ia there one who, entertaining prejudices
at vanenoe with the approved institutions of
* te, or the fixed circumstances or our
nit), would inconsiderately and unwisely
kem, or madly outrage the interests ami
rights of the people. Such a one wo)lld be false
o his constituents, and unfaithful to the trust
committed to him i and motives as well of rec>
titude as of interest, would enjoin its to pro
scribe h m from our councils, Nor is there tol
crated on it, him who **111*1# 11fltr popularity,"
who seeking office hy abase siihs-j vieucy, in
violation of Ilia judgment, and at the sacrifice
fins conscience, to the wll of the few—or no
mattorhow many, may g*v.» a false reputation
of "obedience to the will of the people.” This one
tramples n,i<fn the constitution lie swears to
ma ntiun j violates the pledge by which he binds
himself by all the sob monies of religion, severs
the tie which connects the institutions of min
with the seat of unerring wisdom and justice—
and Mir enders the judgment which his God
has given to direct him, and winch that consti
tution and that oath have made the guide of Ins
conduct. Thus forswearing both Ids reason
and his conscience—bartering away his head
and his heart, and disregarding the moral sense
which should influence him as an accountable
being, and tho pride which should actuate him
as a man A proud people who respect them*
selves, will not present themselves among the
collected wisdom and dignity uf the state in the
pevHOn of a representative thus vile and despioa-
cuble j a thinking peoplu must distrust him who
thus renounces his reason and his m nd» and u
virtuous people must loath the wretch thus con*
soienceless.
The following ticket is deformed hy none of
these ; It is approved by ronsiderations which
sage experience in the puron of one of the pat
riarchs of our country has prescribed for our
guidance in t^e selection of public agents j and
the enquiries and the only enquiries made in
relation to those whose names compose It were,
