At a Convention of Republican citizens
held at Portsmouth, New-Hampshtre, the

A letter from Laguira of the 26th Dec.

Capt Frisoie, of the Bchr. Lottery jttriv-

The Turks have lately pulled down a
part of the glorious Parthenon at Athens,
for the sake of the lead which is employed
in the junction of the stones. This new
dilapidation has strewed the ground with
/figments of both sculpture and architec
ture.
The society for the encouragement of
National Industry, at Paris, at its general
sitting of Oct. 30, decreed to Mr. Duval,
comer, the prize for the manufacture of
Russia leather. This discovery is repre
sented hs very important, as book-binders
may make use of this leather instead of
the Russian, which is generally badly dreg-

The New-York Eye Infirmary has existed
little more than two years j yet during that
period, no less than one thousand 'seven
hundred and sixty-six patients have been
prescribed for, and several of them born
blind, actually restored to sight.
The unpopularity of the new Marriage
Act in England, may be judged of from the
following circumstance“ As the Cler
gyman of the Savoy Church was reading
the new marriage act on Sunday morning
last, the congregation (with the exception
of one gentleman from Somerset House)
walked out of the Church, leaving the walls
Be. to hear, and dearly beloved Roger,
the clerk, to say amen.
By a statement in a late Paris paper, it
appears that the receipts of the twelve
theatres in that city, including the Cirque
Olymfique, may be valued, one year with
another, at 5.SOU,MU francs, of which they
give 500,00U for the use of the poor; 10,000
persons daily frequent the theatres, of
whom 6,0M pay and 3,000 have free ad
mission. The receipts fur minor theatres,
balls, gardens, colfee bouses for soirees,
amusantes, curiosities, Uc. Be. may be es
timated at 1,M0,000, of which 1M.0M
francs go to the poor. 8o that public a-
musemonts produce six hundred thousand
rjtiics fur charitable purpose*
Nearly one filth of the whole number of
deaths in the city or New-York, last year,
by the City Inspector’s Report, were of

The Weather For several days
past the weather has' been extremely
cpld ; the Thermometer, by Fahren
heit’s scale, varying between 20° and
28° until Sunday morning, when it
moderated, with a considerable fall
of snow, and on yesterday we were-
amused with the novel sight of sleighs,
sleds, end sledges, darting througli
our streets, tram the dignified coach
sleigh drawn by four fine horses, to
(he humble pecking box, turned up
side down, part of the ends broken a
way, and the sides shaped into a run
ner, baavily dragged along by a spa
vined, wind galled, wind , broken ro.

had, probably, been turned out to

Reported Piracy.—A. short time
since a person in a sailor’s habit, went
to the uflice, of the New Bedlunl
Mercury, and requested the editor to
report the loss ol bis vessel, by pi*
rates. He stated that his name is D.
W. Smith, and was supercargo uf the
brig Mary Ann, of Wilmington, Cap
tain Thurber ; and sailed from Ila-
vana on the 21st Nov. bound to New
York, with a cargo consisting of 150
nlids. molasses, ami 50 bags of coffee;
that on the I3th of Dec. on the Baha
ma Banks, they were boarded by a
piratical s'chr. of about 50 tons, and
about 40 men, who robbed them of
all their cabin stores, trunks of clo
thing, watches, and about 9000 dot
lars in specie, belonging to himself
and fin? 1 passengers uu board ; took
out about ten bags of coffee, then
drove the captain, crew and passen
gers (in all 15 persons) into their boat,
with about ten gallons of water, and
a small quantity of bread and beef,
and then burnt the brig with there-
mainder of the cargo. Tlmt on the
mb of Dec. they were taken up by
the ship Rob-Roy, Capt. Johnson, of
London, from Kingston, Jain, who
took them on board and carried them
to Halifax-. That he and Capt. Tliur-
ber look passage in the sloop Catha
rine, Capt. Jojin .Tripp, and arrived
at Harwich on Saturday last, Capt.
T. proceeded to Boston, and lie to
this town, on his way to New-York,
where his lather, who is a merchant,
resided. Mr. Smith particularly rfe-
qipstcd (he editor to mention, that he
bclives the pirate was the sclir. Mary,
Captain William Paul, of Baltimore.
. BOW STREET.
Might Charges—Henry Mediant),
Esq. a law student, was brought up
Irutn St. Clement’s watch liuuse, to
which place he had been consigned
between eleven end tweiveon the pre
ceding night, at the suit of an ancient
oyster-woman of the parish.
The venerable fishmongress deposed
that Mr. Medland was iu the practice
occasionally of taking oysters at Iter
shop ; and in general he conducted
nimself like a very nice sect of gen
tleman—so much so, that she had
more pleasure in npeniugfor him than
lur any oilier gentleman of her ac
quaintance i but on this unfortunate
night he came in very tipsy, and de
voured so many oysters that she was
quite alarmed at him. She opened,
and opened, and opened, till her
hands and arms ached ready to drop
off) and still he kept craving for more,
and he would have them in spite of
remonstrances. At last he took it in
his head to go out to look at the wea
ther, and she took that opportunity
of lucking him nut, thinking he would
be satisfied with what lie had, and
would guquieily home ; but instead
of this he commenced an assault and
battery on her door, and before she
could unlock it he had not only fore-
ed it off the the hinges, but had shiv
ered one of the panncls to pieces with
Ins foot.- She was now more alarm
ed than ever, and tearing he might
even attempt to serve her as he had
the oysters, she slcreek'd for the watch,
and he was takeu to the watch house,
Mr. Medland, who seemed to be
still under the influence of the Tus
can grape, heard all this with a quiet
cumiurtable simper, and then, making
a low lounging sort of bow tu the la
dy, he said, in a voice that seemed to
make its way with difficulty through
mass of oysters, “suppose, Mrs.
Jinkms, I reinstate your door, you
will be satisfied ?”
“Sir,” interrupted the magistrate,
“ you must satisfy me as well as Mrs.
Jiukius ; you have broken the public
peace ; let ine knuw what you have to
say to that ?”
*• Your Worship,” replied Mr. Med-
land, with an oysler oppressed sigh,
“ your Worship, 1 have nothing to lay
save and except that I’was rather—”
‘Drunk, you mean to aay,” said
his Worship. " >■
” Your Worship, I am sorry to say,
conjectures rightly,’’replied Mr. Med
land, with another very graceful bow,
and another sigh from the very bot
tom ul Ids oysler bed.
“ Then, Sir,” rejoined the
ntgts-
Irate, payAhe woman for the damage
you have (tone her door—pay one sliil
ling for your discharge fee, and five
shillings for being drunk; and then
gn abnut your business, and keep your-
eels sober for the future ”
Mr. Medland bowed ogaio, and
beckoned to a young man at the far
ther end of the office, who instantly
stepped.forward and paid the money ;
and then Mr. Medland making two
distinct bows—one to the magistrate,
and the other to his oyster woman,
slided genteelly out of the office.

Cotton in Alabama.—In exhibiting,
on Mumlay last, the increase of cut-
ton, as having been seven hundred
per cent, in the vicinity of the waters
leading to this bay, in the space of five
years, it would have been well, per
haps, to have added snnte further re
marks, lest the circumstance should
create suspicions that the extension
of the culture of cotton exceeds reali
ty-
It is to be recollected that tho cut
tivaturs of this article, in this new
country, must have conic from some
where, and it ia scarcely necessary
*o add, that they came, generally,
from cotton planting stales; therefore,-
it is fair to presume, that a considers
bio purtion of this increase in the ag
gregate would have been realized,
even if none had been plauted in this
state.
A diminution, however, in older
states, may in a few yoara be expect
ed, as it is generally acknowledged
that a very large portion of their for
mer fertile lands have become cum -
parilively barren from cuntinu.d cul
tivation, Therefore, these is very lit
tle reason to apprehend that the fu
ture increase will very iar exceed the
increase of consumption, parliculurly
if the planter will be cautious nut in
over plant—that js, tn avoid planting
more than he can do justice I<>. The
proper distinctions in quality have
not heretofore been genes.illy ob.-ur
ved, particularly in Georgia and Al
abama ; but'each quality is now ac
quiring it proper rank among the dea
lers. Colton has of late engrossed su
much of the attention of the commer
cial world, ’hat almost every retailer
uf merchandize is becoming nearly as
good a judge nfitas the foreign ma
nufacturer. Planters,, therefore, will
reulize the importance ol making none
ofau iuferiur quality. The bagging
and freight down the river on inferior,
are equully as expensive to him as on
prime, to the foreign shipper (he
freight, duty, &c. arc the same. But
the manufacturer who regu.ates these
matters, has the best means of ascer
taining the real difference between
good and bad cotton, after calculat
ing the loss ef weight and time in se
parating the trash from that which is
manufactured.—Mobile Comm. Reg.
Extract of a letter tluted Antigua, Jan. S.
“Corn and Corn Meal here arc a
perfect drug, in consequence of the
planters having commenced reaping
their crop of ground provisions, which
are very abundant. . This island, for
the last ten years, has not had such
a prospect for a provision crop, as al
this moment. I have not the smallest
doubt but there are yams and eddnes
sufficient to feed the whole island for
seven months at least. An Amciican
brig ia here from Milford, with meal
& corn; (he. supercargois retailing the
meal at g25 per puncheon; payable iu
sugar of an indifferent quality, at 86}
ana the corn al 85 cts, same payment.
This is really a ruinous business,—
Some small sales of flour have been
made at 811. but 200 barrels would
stock our island.
Mobile, Jan. 20‘—The demand for
Cotton during the past week, was
fully equal to the quantity in market;
towards the last the finer qualities
were much in demand, and for a lot
uf very superior 11} cts was obtained.
Inferior and lower qualities rather
dull at 7 to 8}.

We hope the very respectable and full

of an increased audience this evening. The
play of Mian and Orilla, is without doubt,
one of much interest, and we are cer-

the judicious encouragement of the public
which can enable the managers to bring
