Winter appear* to have reserved hi*

into something like a smile. On Saturday
night, the wind catne •round to the N. W

more intense than any we have felt till*
winter, or indeed, we believe, titan has
been experienced for several years. ’(he
thermometer, at half past seven o’olock,
yesterdayratorning, in the Open air, was
fifteendegrees below the freezing point!—
anintensity of cold which renders a cheer-

A letter from General Gtasscpck, one of
the Commissioners appointed to form a
-treaty with the Cherokee Indians, to the
editor of the Augusta Chronicle, dated at
the Cherokee Agency, Jan 22, states, that
having remained until the 20th-to obtain a
meeting with the- Chiefs and Hoad men,
without hearing from them, the commis
sioners had prepared and furwarded a spi
riled address, urging the necessity of an
immediate assemblage, which had been
forwarded by express, The commission-
era wero at that time waiting an answer.
In addition to the above, we find the
following in the Milledgeville Recorder of
Tuesday last.from which it appeara that
the hope of forming a treaty, had been en
tirely relinquished" The Commission-
ora appointed to form a treaty with the!
Cherokee Indians, have returned home wcv
understand without effecting their object-
'These Indians are aaid to be decidedly a.
verse to making any cession of'their ter

their Chiefs not, on the peril of their lives,
to cede a foot of land.”
In the House of Representatives, on the
8th inst. a report was made from the com-
lUittee to which the subject had been re
ferred , accompanied by a bill, making the
gold coins of Great Britain, France, Portu
gal ;nd Spain, receivable in payment on
nccount of public lands, A resolution re-
questing information ns to the appropria

Secretary of the Treasury wus erased,
and relative to the deposits of public mo

States, after considerable debate, waa a

On the 7th inst, nothing of importance
was transacted—tlie tariff kill was under
discussion;
The weather at New-York was very se

ofN. W. winds there had been no arrivals'
On the morning ol the 7th inot. the mei-j

aero. At Norfolk, the Weather on the 7th
was the most severe experienced during
the winter, the mercury at 7 o’clock in the
evening at 27, wind N. W. And at Balti
more on the 6th, the weather was intense
ly cold, and the harbor obstructed by ica.
The Norfolk Herald of the 7th Instant
states, that Gom. Porter’s squadron had
.dropped down to the anchorage, between
the forts, and joined the Peacock (flag
ship); and-that the whole were to sail in
-the beginning of the last week.
Spain.—A letter from Malaga, of tile
‘7th December, states that in consequence
of a decree of the Cortes for raising
30,000 men for the army, the authorities
have been drafting by ballot, the number
which Malaga has to furnish, which is 120;
from 18 to 36 years. The Bishop of that
place had been baniBhed die ccuntry, and
resides at Gibraltar, where he keeps up his
Apostolic Convention of course in favor
of the former system. Orders had been
received and communicated to a dozen of
the Canons of the Carhedral of Malaga, to
prepare to leave, in ten days, for the inte
rior Prov-nces destined for them, being ac
cused of being servile*.

THE PRIZE TO THE SPARK.
A’oij'otk, Feb. 7.—Yesterday morn
ing anchored under Sewell’s Point, a
Spanish sfcltr. called the Infanta Ca
talina, sent in by the U. S. brig Spark,
Captain Wilkihaofi, charged with
having committed piracy in plunder
ing the sclir. N/ihcy Eleanor, Cspt,
Huwel 1 , of Baltimore. From Mid
shipman John Saunders, of the Spark,
who has charge ofthe I, C. we learn
that abiiut the middle of [January,
while the Spark was ill Havana, Capt.
Howell, nl the above schooner Nan
cy Eleanor.' culled un Captan Wilk
inson, and informed him, thAl a schr.
which Imd robbed his vessel about two-
mouths hr fore, was then in the port of
Havana, and that qftor coalmining
ihe robbery, her captain had threat
ened hiih, (Captain Howell,) that if
he krnw ol his giving information of
the robbery to any of onr cruiser*, he
wuu'd cut him to pieces, if he should
ever fall into his hands again. As a
repr.-s.-n alien of the facts to the ci
vil authority would probably have
been to no pu-pose, but might have
been attended with ill consequences
lo Capt. Howell, none waa made—
But on the 26th Of January, the re
gular day fur the Sfilrk. to Bail tilth
convoy, the Inlanta Cuialina also got
under way and slbitu to sod, bound to
O'inpeachy The Spark, with the
Nsuiy Eleanor under convoy, weigh
ed and stood out after her, which she
perceiving attempted to run b.ck in
to port, but was.Cut off by Ihe Spark
who brought her too and sent* boat
on board with capt. Howell and his
mate to ascertain if they could iden
tify any of tier people as having been
concerned in the robbery. Tbe cap
i&io, the boatswain, and several of (he
crew of (lie Infanta Catalini were im
mediately recognised by them lobe
the same who had boarded and i-ob-
hed the Nancy Eleanor, aa before
dated ; and Upon their testimony,
Captain Wilkinson considered it his
duty to order the vessel and crew to
the United States for trial. She is
destined lor Baltimore, (for the con
venience of the wiineB-cs, who belong
to that port,) and put into Hainnlon
Roads on account of head wind-.—
Midshipman Whittle has also arrived
in 'lie prize.
The I-danta Catalina is s large
clipper built schooner, of about 16(1
tons has one long gun a-midships, with
u number of small arms, and 20 men,
15 of Whom are brought in, and the
reitiamdor detained on board the
Spaik.
The officers and crew of the Spark
were all well.
