Fourth of July.!
I learn that wp am to receive between
28 and 29 millions of francs, payable in six
annual instalments. But what percentage
on the claims will that, snm pay ? That is
thd question which so deeply interests the
claimants, and yet is so difficult to solve.

Gallatin estimated the total amount ut about
five millions of dollars;—two millions to bo
considered hopeless, because they were for
captures regularly tried and condemned un-
der Berlin and Milan Peeress. It is suppos.
ed that he would Imve been glad to com
promise fur only three million of dollars, be
ing about the amount of the property burnt
or destroyed at sea, or seized under oven
worse circumstances than the captures.—
Thus you see Mr. Rives has obtained nearly
double as much as Mr Gallatin would prob
ably have been willing to take.
This treaty will be one of the most impor
tant events to our country, that has happened
for many years. It is not merely the sum
to be received by our citizens, but the con
solidating of the friendship of the two coun
tries. Instead of the danger of .our being
forced to have recourse to measures of retal
iation against France, 'such ns non-interven
tion, non-intcreonrsc, or even War, we have
now the prospect of long rominued friend
ship, nnd increased commerce, the more
desirable from the danger of eventual collision
with England on the score of our maritime
rights.
This treaty, I confess, is ns unexpected to
me, as jA is fortunate for onr country ; l itttt
convinced it would never have been effected,
but for the uuparalled o.wrtions, the untiring
perseverance, the skill nnd address of Mr.

labors are not adequately rewarded, thfcy
will at least be duly appreciated.

TO THE CITIZENS OF SAVANNAH.
There jp nomn discussion at this moment
in .relation to the election of a Board of Al
dermen of the City of Savannah. It lias
been fqpsomc time toy opinion, that the pub
lic is.deeply indebted lo honest men, who
servA them. If n public man ho faithful and
understand tho duty of Ins office, lie ought to
he retained, especially in such an office, os
our city cnlls him to—rotation is a doubtful
■ advantage in sucli a case.
It is the general opinion that the finances
of the city have been well administered, (a
most important duly)—that, good police re
gulations have been established and contin
ued, and there is reason to believe that change
cannot,at this time, ho particularly desirable.
I would only ask any man of fair, unbiassed
judgment, to look at the list of the present
Board of Aldermen, and say if fye does not
think it a very advantageous representation of
tho feelings, interests, talent nnd respectabil
ity of the city. I ask the public why desire
a change ! What are the motives of those
who seek it 1 A CITIZEN.

TO Tim EDITORS OP THE GEORGIAN.
“ Market Square” is much mistaken if he
supposes the “ Growers” know him not. VVe
can assure you, Messrs. Editors, that although
living in Market Square, “Market Square”
lias as much to do with “ Grocers” as ono of
your own devils have about 11 A.M. “Mar
ket Square” we know procured a Grocei to
father the article, and we further know that the
pretended author lias neither the mind, lime
nor application to franiesuch a studied piece.
Honest John und Ins minions can work out
any thing give, them but the tools, and the
Squire has on this occasion proved himself to
be an easy although not a very sharp one. The
sponsor certainly deserves the warmest com
mendations of the community for loaning him
self at this day to those who would Imve spur
ned him on any former occasion; and as it is
well known that he feathered his nest in times
gone by, by what he would now cull a viola
tion of the Sabbath, it is nothing more t han
could be expected from his consistency, that
lie should now raise the cry against ull who
wish a repeal of the Sabbath Ordinance. We
wish to be expressly understood that we are
no advocates for the violation of the Sabbath
iu any way or form, but we must strenuously
insist that we have the right to express our-
selveff, and if assisted by friends, whether
Grocers or not, we deem ourselves entitled to
that respect which appertains to ull citizens
when they feed themselves aggrieved, and are
pursuing the course which they think will se
cure to them their right, nmLpluce them on
an equal fooling with the rest of the communi
ty. AIAN V GROCERS.
