The following resolution for appointing
and instructing a permanent committee was
road by the President, with the excep

was afterwards inerted, on motion of Judga
Shorter.

ple in Southampton, a number of families of
free negroes, about 100 persons in all, hav~

and offshore,has this season been unprofita
ble, in consequence oftho innumerable dog
fish which infest the grounds. Both tho mar
ket fishermen from ibis quarter and those who
cure fish, make loud complnints of their dep:
redations ; they can scarcely get their hooks
into tho water before tho bait is seized hy the
dog-fish, which also drive off’the cod und had
dock. The dog-fish are killed hi vast num
bers, yet they seem scarcely to bo diminished.
At this season, they nre so small tlmFtheir
rough skins, used to polish furniture, &c. are
not worth taking off. Late in the Fall they
are of some value.
