in his opinion, may be dfceftil and important
to Congress in enacting regulations for tho
navigation of Bteum-bouts or st<>ain-vcssels,
, with a view to guard against ih«» dangers aris
ing from the bursting of their boilers.
Such measures were accordingly taken ns
wore thought best calculated to obtain tho
requisite information. But, altlumgb gomo-
highly interesting and valuable communica
tions have boon received, the Department
Inis not succeeded in collecting tho facts suf
ficient to enable it to fulfil tho directions of
the house.
In consideration, therefore, of tho difficulty
of obtaining tho requisite information, by any
means within tho power of the Department,
and ot the deep interest which tho communi
ty,and more especially those engaged in steam
navigation, have in the subject, it is thought
best to mako this public Application to all
who may be able, itnd aro disposed, to pro
mote tho benevolent object of tho Resolution.
Accidents, like those which it is the desire
of the House to prevent, havo, unfortunately
been so numerous that many persons wiL

rest? Wns the valve open! Ifao, hmv long
before the accident! \\ as it opened by tho
engineer, or by pressure ?
10. Wus the piston going at its usual
speed, or faster, or slower ?
11. Had tho firemen found any uniisunl dif

previously to the bursting oftlie boiler; and,
if ao, bow long before ?
12. Do tho iron boilers used in tho western
waters generally accumulate* calcareous in

or what means been used, with success, to
prevent it 1
13. Is it observed that when there is n se

14. Arc any means used for preventing in
crustation on the bottom of boilers ; und, it
so, what effect lias been observed!

to scald ? Was the current of steam from
the rent in the boiler instantaneous, or did it
continue for sonic iimo, und how long?
What number of persons wore wounded by
tho parts of the boiler or machinery, which
were driven off by the explosion, and what
position did each of such persohs occupy in
the bout ?
21. Have you over observed tho piston to
move irregularly for a few minutes, or for a
few strokes, alternately faster or slower than
its iihuuI speed, without pereoiving any chnngo
in the resitnneo lb the paddles, or any others
obvious cause for such irregularity ; und, if
so, bow it was accounted for ?
