Poetry.
The poet's eye in a line frenzy rolling,
Doth glance from Heaven to earth, from earth to
Heaven ;
And a imagination bodies torth
The form-’ o’ ige unknown, me poet’s pen
Turns t n ■ pe. and gives to airy nothing
A local habitat. . ! n -me.— Shakspeare.
(FOR THE JOURNAL.]
Mate he —A nK pi g i*ain.
Matches they 3ay in Heaven are made ;
But those who think the maxim true,
Need only draw one ’cross the wall,
To doubt, and change their opinion too—
So strong smell they ol brimstone’s fumes,
So much of sulphur’s in them found,
It were far easier to believe
Matches are made beneath the ground !
An Old Story*
The snow falls fast in the silent street,
And the wi"ds an; laden with cutting sleet ;
And there is a pitiless glare in the sky,
Asafaintiug woman goes wondering by.
The rags that wrapt her wasted form,
Are frozen stiffin the perishing storm ;
And she is no cold, that the snow ilakes rest
Unmelted, upon her marble breast.
Ah ! who could believe that those rayless eyes,
Were once as sunny as April skies !
And the dowers she plucked iu the early spring,
Loved to be touched by 60 pure a thing !
Tis past—and the fierce wind shrieking by,
Drowns thefaintgasp of her parting sigh—
And lifeless she tails at the outer gate
Os him who has left her desolate !
Silently falls the snow on her face,
Clothing her form in its stainless grace ;
As though God in his mercy, had willed that she
Should die in a garment of purity.
