THE TIME AND I'LACE.
Editor Gazette:
We invite the Summerville boys to
meet us in Trion on the evening of2Stb
of this month. There will be three to
represent Trion in the discussion.
One of the Trion Boys.
John W. Starling, the mail carrier,
got out of the hack about two miles from
town last Thursday. The horses dashed
off, jerked the lines from his hands, and
struck out for town. The mail and his
load were soon scattered, but almost
everything was picked up. Coming
across the causeway on the east side of
town the hack was upset, but was not
injured much. One of the horses was
badly crippled.
One morning a widower drove up to
the house of a widow, and called out,
“Hello." She came to the door. “The
Lord has sent me to ask you to marry
me," was his first remark. She delib
erated for half a minute, and replied,
“The will of the Lord be done! Light
and come in.” We have read this, and
always suspectwf it to he a fabrication;
bnt we are told it actually happened in
this eounty not many years ago.

A dozen persons met at the church last
Friday night. Judge Hawkins was called

in which all agreed that the condition of
the cemrtery was the worst thing visible
around Summerville, J. A. Branner, J.
W. Maddox, and J. S. Cleghorn, were
appointed a committee to negotiate for
the purchase of two more acres of laud,
and to ask the town council to raise by
taxation the balance needed to buy the
land and enclose the whole; if this fails,
to try to raise it by subscription.

SUGGESTING A CONVENTION.
Editor Gazette:
Allow me to suggest to the people of
Chattooga county, and the chairman of
the Democratic executive committee, the
importance of holding a mass meeting at
the court house on the first Saturday in
July, for the purpose of nominating a
candidate for the senate, and other im
portant business. On that day the road
commissioners meet, and will have a
delegation from each district. Also allow
me to add a word of warning. The Re
publican party is vigilantly watching our
movements, hoping that we will become
divided among ourse'ves. 1 berefore it
behooves us to see to it that we nominate
a mao tha‘ is not only acceptable with
u -selves, but will be equally so with
Bartow and Floyd counties. While we
have many good men qualified to make
us a -enator. we have very few that will
carry and control the vote oi the
district
Permit me to indorse Hon L N.
Trammell's views, with three cheers for
H >n. Jud*on C Clements for congress
again, as the only man who had the nerve
and courage to carrv the party so
gloriously and triumphantly through the
last two races. A VOTER.

BOV SMOKERS.
We want all the boys who aro in the
habit of enuring cigarettes, or who are
beginning to learn to smoke them, to pay
attention while we toll them of a sad
event that recently took place in one of
our eastern cities.
Among the number of bright boys who
had set out to become budness men was a
lad fifteen years of age, employed in a
lawyer's offioe. During his leisure hours
and on Sundays ha was in the habit of
smoking cigarettes,, the smoke of which
he inhaled. From this he passed to
chewing, and it is said that when he was
not smoking a cigarette, bo always had
tobacco in his mouth, and occa-ionally
oombined the two. His parents en
deavored to break him of the habit, but
all they could say and do had no effect.
His health soon began to fail rapidly,
and his family, who were not aware that
tobacco would havo such injurious effects,
fancied that his weakness was caused by
tha close confinement which he ’had to
undergo at his place of businoss.
He soon became so ill that he could
not sleep at i ight, and his appetite began
to fail. Hie countenance was very sallow,
and he had severe headaches. Finally his
mother took him to see a physician who,
on examining him, thought that he was
suffering for the want of the right kind
of food, and prescribed tcnics and things
that aro nourishing and strengthening.
But instead of improving in health, the
poor lad constantly grew worse, and was
soon confined to his bed. The doctor
then learned that the boy had been
addicted to the excessive use of tobacco
in every form, aud he came to tho con
clusion that his patient was suffering from
niootinc poisoning. Nothing that could
be done had any effect iu restoring the
suffering boy. Ho lingered for about a
week, when congestion of the lungs set
in, and the heart began to fail in its
functions. This was the beginning of the
end. Within twenty-four hours he was
dead, killed by the foolish habit he had
formed ol'smoking cigurettesjand chewing
tobaooo. — Harper's Young People.

Peterson’s Magazine for June is already
on our table; ahead as usual, of all com
petitors, and getting better, as it seems
to us, every month. The principal en
graving is a steel one, ‘‘Waiting for a
bite,” and is graphic and humorous be
yond words. The leading fashionplate is
double in size, printed from steel, and
colored by hand. Peterson is now the
only magazine that goes to the expense
of these beautiful affairs. There arc also
several patterns in the popular cross
stitch, printed in colors, besidos nearly
fifty wood cuts of fashions, embroideries,
etc. The literary contents are even better
than usual. In the humorous line we
have a story by “Josiah Allen's Wife,”
and another, "A Rolling Stone,” a Vir
ginia dialect one, by Mrs. Shoffey Peters.
Mrs. Ann 8. Stephens continues her
oapital novelet, ’’Her season in Washing
ton," and other love stories are con
tributed by Frank Lee Benedict, etc.
Really, it is a problem how so good a
magazine can be published at so low a
price, which is only $2 a year, with
deductions to clubs. Anew volume
begins with the next number, so that
now is an especially good time to sub
scribe. Specimens are sent gratis, if
written for, to persons wishing to get up
clubs. It appears to us that every lady
of refinement ought to take this maga
zine. Address, Charlps J. Peterson, 306

A backwoodsman promised to send the
minister 50 pounds of maple sugar for
marrying him. Time pussed in, and no
maple sugar arrived to sweeten the
minister’s household. Some months
later he saw the newly married husband
in town, and ventured to remind him.
“My friend, you did not send the maple
sugar you promised.” With a saddened
countenance the man looked up and re
plied: “To tell you the truth, she ain’t
worth it.”
