The Depression In Cane Syrup.
The great depression in tho price
of cane syrup this ceason la very dis
couraging to tho farmers, who scarce
ly understand tho cause of the slump.
It is unreasonable to think that the
demand for it is lessened. It mu3t be
remembered that the South Georgia
syrup industry is y't undeveloped in
tho best methods of making and mar
keting. Tho farmers generally are
just beginning to Invest In Improved
machinery to make ayrnp recording
to scientific methods. Indoed, the
fact that many farmers have invested
expensive macnlmery this year
makes the slump In prloss all the
more discouraging. Also, tha market
ing medium doea not yst inset the re
quirements of tho situation. Whereas,
skillfully flavored and mors or less
spurious saccharine preparations are
liberally supplied to the market in
neat cans under fancy names, the pure
cane syrup is put up for market usu
ally in barrels. It does not keep
well thiB way and Is not attractive to
tho retail dealer. It Is raid that very
few people outside South Georgia ever
get the pure cane syrup.
It was sold to the wholesale mer
chants in barrels and passing into
tho hands of certain dealers, it was
liberally mixed with cheaper stuff—
glucoso presumably—one barrel of
cano syrup under this treatment moro
than doubling itself In quantity. It
was sold then as pure Georgia cano
syrup. Mr. Brinson, of Decatur coun
ty, got a bill passed by tho legislature
prohibiting this very thing, and many
pcoplo think tho slump in prices is
duo to this. Tho dealers no longer get
their former profits, and are unwil
ling to pay so much for tho syrup. It
would seem that tho remedy for this
would bo tho erection of several can
ning factories in the cane raising sec
tions, where the syrup could bo pre
pared for market In quart or half-gal
lon cans. Attractively labelled and
Introduced In the light way for what
It Is—pure oone syrup—II wauld soon
establish itself y a staple commod-
it,. All thla mult com* with time,
but It la quite as feasible at bringing
the cotton mills to the cotton fields.
In the meantime, while the farmer
can afford to produce sjrrup at thirty
cents a gallon, he cannot make any
thing out of It at seventeen cents.—

Olluts Merchandise,
A London grocer! was recently
caught selling a substance labelled
cocoa. 70 per cent of which consisted
of sugar and ssgo. He pleaded ex
emption from the penalties imposed
by the food and drug act because
there was a small label Inside the
wrapper, “no larger than a postngo
stamp," stating that tne package con
tained *a mixture.” The Judge dis
missed the complaint on the ra" - ir
remarkable ground that 70 per cent,
was not an indue percentage of for
eign matter.
It evidently doesn't much matter
how stringent a pure food law Is on
the statute books, unleu an honest
and Intelllgaat enforcement of It can
ha secured. As matters low stand
In this country, and evidently also In
Great Britain, desglta her special laws,
tha retail buyer has no security, short
of paying tha highest price, and pos
sibly if 3 ', even then, that be la getting
a genuine article. He cannot be ex
pected to take bis purchue to a lab
oratory for anlysls, and even If tho
adulterant* use/ are harmless, tho
fraud deserve* legislative correction.
In matters of this sort the lalsses fairo
policy of letting each man take caro
of himself leaves the Individual buyer
of tho poorer classes entirely helpless
In tho hand*-‘tit the merchant, and
while it by no means follows that he
Is always cheated, ho certainly may
bo with Impunity as matters now
stand.

Do Not Suppress a Cough.
When you have a cough do not try
to suppress It, but remove the cause.
The cough Is only a symptom of some
