RETURNING HOME IN NEW ORLEANS PEOPLE FLOCK TO WELCOME THE PRESIDENT. The Epidemic is About Ended and the Refugees are Returning—The The City 8choola are Opening Their Doors and Many Children Enter. Nejv Orleans, La., Oct. 17.—The rush of New Orleans people to their homes continues, induced by Iho fact that the fever has passed and by the anexiety to be hero during the visit of the President to show him how his services during the fever fight were appreciated. The influx from surrounding states and more instant sections is also in creasing. The school attendance has Increased more than five thousand since the schools were opened two weeks ago. Two more schools open ed this week, leaving only two more unopened. To noon today, there were two new cases of fever and no deaths, making tho totals 3,331 cases to date and 434 deaths. Dr. J. M. Ro nau. bacteriologist •f the Marine hotpial service, who was sent here by Surgion General Wyman to make Investigations at the Emergen- 07 hospital, has returned to Washing ton. In his work here be has co-op- trat#d with Dr. Goldberger, also of tho oervlce. Dr. Rosenau took with him n-umerous samples of blood, etc., bat btfor# ho left would not bo quoted 00 to any discoveries. Dr. Rosenau. tt la understood, however, found the type of disense so mild that ho had dif. Acuity In obtaining tho material he <1»*. alrod. When Dr. Rosenau arrived the disease had changed from a malignant to a rather mild tye of fever. General Improvement in state eondl. tlons continue Lake Providence considers that the disease there has practically been wiped out. It lias almost been over come at Tallulah, but PrcHldent Gaines, of tho Tallulah hoard, has Issued an appeal to Tallulah refugees not to re turn until there Is a heavy frost, sc that fresh material may not bo pro vided for tne disease. Only one death occurred in the state outside of New Orleans In the preceding 24 hour*. Tiie lifting of some of the quarnn tines is already bringing country peo pie Into New Orleans, and enabling other country people who have been refugee!tig her.- and elsewhere, turn to th.-lr homes. WHY ANGEL8 HAVE NO BEARD. In carving the faces of sculptured angels upon the new Episcopal Ca thedral of St. John the Dlvli* New York, forty of the angelic fig ures were represented as fenial This aroused the attention of t clergymen, who thought that some of the best established stances of angels, Raphael, A>rael, Michael and Gabriel were men, that some place should be glvei to men In the Cathedral’s ranks of angel3. It was finally (fetermlned that men angels should have a place, but Dr. Huntington pointed out that he had never seen a picture or sculpture of au angel with whiskers, and. there fore, all the angels were directed to be with smooth faces. This Is not a new question at all. It was long since settled by a dis tinguished divine, the Rt. Rev Rich ard H. Wllmer, late Bishop of Ala bama, who was remarkable at once for his piety and humor. When some one asked him why It was *hat tho pictures and figures of men an gels, as well as female ang.Ms, v represented without beards. Bishop replied promptly that soemed to be easy enough to make angels out of women, but that men could only get Into heavea by “close shave.”—Richmond Times- Dispatch. THE SEARCH FOR HER MURDERER!! Consul Guenther says in a report that German lawyers are liable in damages to their clients for evil -re sults consequent upon mlileadlng advice. The Supreme Court of Ger many has recently rendered a de cision that an attorney is liable to hu? c licnt to the full extent for care lessly giving Incorrect advice. The court held that the attorney who for pay gives his client In legal matters advice as to certain conduct and procedure Is liable for the legal consequences suffered by the client in acting thereon, provided that such advice Is not only faulty, but has been proved to have been given carelessly. An attorney tacitly assumes the position of debtor of the client, which obliges him to bo careful In giving advice, and he Is, therefore, liable for Its- consequences If he has failed through carelessness. suit of a lengthy conference last witn William Ellis, of Australia lies lu the hospital with a tracturd skull, indicted, it is alleged, by a Known as Brush, alias Curtis, ,u:. who.
