Gainesville, Oct. 30—Notwithstand ing the fact that the production of cotton in Alachua county will fall short about 33 per cent this year, it Is a fact also that prices are running lower than for several seasons. It Is natural to Infer that the scarcity of the staple would have a tendency to increase rather.than decrease pi-tee. t s It has been Intimated that the buy* | ers in this territory have combine^ in an agreement on prices. One party from Alachua which is the most im-». j portant cotton center In the coiinty, if not tho entire oe& Island belt/in Florida, states that a great deal the cotton In that section is bell held for more encouraging prices and, as a rule, those holding the same are financially enabled to do so, eventual ly forcing the buyers to pay better prices. In .the majority of cases those growers selling cotton are disposing of the staple In the seed .under vanced contract. ' yjfli There has been ginned at Alachua far this season about'1,000 bales, against about 1,400 tor the same per iod last year. The highest price paid so far this season was 18 cents and' the buyers it is said have offered low as 15 cents a pound. The sea island growers of Florida and Georgia will hold a meeting at Alachua on Thursday November 2, for the purpose of forming a growers’ protective association realizing that the time has come when they must combine, If they expect to continue the cultivation of cotton to any finan cial advantage.
