The Morse School of Telegraph; Cincinnati, Ohio Buffalo, N. Y. Last week I promised to write some thing about Portland, Oregon, and the Lewis and Clark exposition which was held at that place and which was brought to a close just a week ago. The World’s Fair at St. IxHito was in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase, while the exposition at Portland was In celebra- bration of the 100th anniversary of the exploring expedition of Lewis and Clark to the Pacific coast the next year. Their trip was a perilous one, full of romance and exciting scenes, and It was nearly two and a half years before they retarded to the east to report upon what they had seen. The news of the wonderful oppor tunities of the new region fired the hearts of many adventurous spirits and new explorations, planned by such ! men as John Jacob Astor soon opened up the region, securing to the United States an extension of frontier on i the Pacific ocean and a vast terrl-, tory watered by the mighty Colum-j bia river. The object of the exposition was to celebrate-the anniversary of this ex- '•ETITION FOR CHARTER. * GEO 1GIA.. Lowndes County. ; ♦ Tty the Superior Court of Said * County: j + Thp petition of G. A. The buildings were erected close togeth er, most of them on one side of the lake, while the “trail,” as the midway was called, was built on piles that ex tended out in the lake, the britbre run ning on across to the government ullding. The grounds were beautifully park ed, flower beds, shrubbery and roses being in profusion, with a great flight of stairs leading frttp the main build ings to the “trail. On the crest of the hill were the exposition buildings, arranged In a group and making them easy to rog^h. The principal build ings were the forestry, agricultural, mines and metallurgy, machinery, transportation and electrical, fine arts, liberal arts and manufactures, and the government building.
