Wireless Telegraphic Communication
With Warship West Virginia.
Norfolk, Va., Oct. 30.—According to
& wireless message received at ihe
Norfolk navy yard, the cruiser West
Virginia was at 10 a. m. 50 miles
i south of Cape Huttera6. A strong
northeast wind anil heavy seas pre
vail. She was not expected to make
the capes lor ten hours.
The weather off the coast yesterday
and last night was bad, and the wind
was very high. There was no weath
er bureau report this morning from
the Hatteras station, as the wires at.
went down in the storm, and no mes
sages could be transmitted to or from
Norfolk.
It was explained at the local weather
bureau that any wireless messages re
ceived at Hatteras from the preside^
would have been sent to Norfolk im
mediately, but for the prostration ol
the coast service. It was stated from
the office of the commandant of the
Norfolk navy yard this morning An
nothing had been heard there from the
president’s yacht Sylph having aboard
Mrs. Roosevelt and children, who le.
Washington on Saturday last. It is
thought here that the Sylph may be In
Lower Chesapeake bay awaiting the
arrival of the president on the West
Virginia.

OUR DIPLOMAT8 ABROAD
There will be an effort during the
coming session of congress to increase
the compensation of our amhassado
and other diplomatic representatives
abbrobad. Our country is the richest,
in the world but there are a number
of foreign countries with not half
our wealth / who pay their representa
tives at foreign courts much more
than we jay ours.
It is claimed by some and with
considerable plausibility that foreign
embassies should no longer be main
tained; that they are anachronisms In
this day oi prompt electric communi
cation between the chancelleries of
the world and in the new and direct
say-precisely-what-you-mean diploma
cy of which Bismark and Hay have
been great exemplars. We should
doiltless maintain our foreign
diplomatic establishments on a par
with those of Great Britain, France
and Germany or else abolish them al
together.
A third course Is open to us sug
gested by our embassy as at present
maintained In London by a multi-mil
lionaire ambassador of high literary
and diplomatic attainments. In short
we should abolish them or pay for
their proper maintenance or give
them to millionaires who are able
and willing to represent the greatness
and power of the United States.

“Jqnory Speer has declared
islon of the district federal
court at Macon Bhall be held until
May, 1906. The reasons for this un
usually long adjournment are recited
in an official utterance just received.
After reviewing the controversy which
has been waged over the disposition
of the old federal building, Judge
Speer states that no quarters have
been provided for the court and that
therefore it is adjourned until the
next regular session.
