THE VALDOSTA TIMES, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 12,1905. - FLORIDA DEPUTY Deputy Sheriff Johns of ] Fernan- dina Lured to His Death His Body Found in the Woods by a Searching Party—Was Called Out on a Bogus Warrant to Make an Arrest and Foully Dealt With. Fernandina, Dec. . 9.—Considerable excitement prevails here tonight over the mysterious disappearance of Dep uty Sheriff E. E, Johns, for it is fear ed that he has been murdered, or has At least met with foul play. Wednesday morning, a man claim* ing to be a fisherman, and giving the name of Abe Brown, came into the city and swore out a warrant for a party named Doty, charging Doty with stealing his fishing nets. The warrant was given to Deputy Sheriff ‘Johns to serve, and the deputy left town in his buggy, accompanied by the man, Abe Brown. Nothing has been seen of Deputy Johns since leaving here with Brown and what causes the apprehension of foul play is the fact that this morn ing the horse driven by the Deputy Sheriff was found at Davis Crossing, with the harness broken. The horse was found between 9 and 10 a. m., ljut there is absolutely no clew as to what has become of Mr. Johns. Parties are out tonight searching the hammock between the city and the beach, and a thorough search will he kept up until some clew to the mysterious disappearance Is found. No one knows anything about the man Brown. He is a young man, ap parently not more than 22 or 23 years of age, has a light moustache, yfc, but no beard. Being a stranger here, *" It is feared that he may have been sent here to lure the deputy away from town and that some harm has been done him. Sheriff Johns Body Found. Andrew Carnegie said today that if he owned America, he would give a premium to immigration to come here Mr. Carnegie said: p “Our country has more than one serious problem ,but immigration is not among them. We have solved the question In the present by the somewhat too drastic law that we have enacted. It is not a problem for us. It is the problem of the poor un fortunate countries from which we are drawing the best blood. “Now, I hold that the prime and only test we should exact is this: Has a man the ambition to enjoy the rights of an American citizen, and has he the habits of sobriety and frugal- ity to save the sum necessary for him to reach this port? and is he skill ful enough to earn that want no better testimony than Not Purity of Blood.
