DORRIS &, THIGPEN, Six Were Killed in an Explosion in New York This Morning. New York, Dec. 19.—Six men were killed and more than a dozen were injured in an explosion of dynamite in excavating for a new building opposite the Waldorf Astoria hotel this morn- ing f The explosion was caused hy the workmen who started to Irill a partially drilled hole in which dynamite sticks had been eft overnight. Some of the men were blown to atoms. Fragments of bodies were scattered over hundreds of feet, md hours passed before the exact number of victims could be iscertalned. The explosion was caused by a workman uninten- ionally striking a heavy charge of dynamite placed in a drill ioIc in the rock several days ago and which defied attempts o explode it then. Intense excitement was caused in the Wald- ■rf Astoria hotel, which is almost directly across the street. 9he scene of the explosion was the fashionable hotel and resi lence section of Fifth avenue and Thirty-fourth street, in the xeavation for the new Altman building. Mobs Killed Every Soldier and Cut up Legs, Arms and Bodies. SCHOOLS TO CLOSE FRIDAY, -f The County Schools Will Take One Tucum, Courtland, Dec. 19—Spe-cial correspondent of the Associated press just arrived, learns that mobs of Lithuanians and Esthonians yes terday attacked one hundred Cossacks and dragoons, the only military ; ho mad force at Tucum. Revolting tales are told of barbarities on German land lords, who are more detested by the Letts than are the Russians. In a fight near Tucum fourteen dragoons were killed and many wounded. It is estimated that the insurgents lost three hundred killed. <5,975,520 Bales Reported to Dec. 13—94 Per Cent of Crop Ginned. Dallas, Tex., Deci 19.—The National Ginners’ report was not completed at noon today, but President Taylor authorized the statement that the total bales ginned to Dec. 13th, amounted to 8,975,520. He says the cropis 94 per cent ginned. Chinese Riots at Shanghai. Shanghai, China, Dec guards and patrols are maintained here to cope with a possible renewal of disturbances. The streets are fill ed with rowdies. The shops are open but looting is greatly feared.
