EXTREME RETRENCHMENT
Increased Business in the Internal
Revenue Department.
| Washington, March 5—With the
.internal revenue receipts $9,000,000
in excess of what they were a year
i ago, Mr. Yerkes, the commissioner
j of internal revenue, has male an ur-
! gent appeal to Congress for $250,000
additional to carry on the work of
the bureau. In a letter transmitted
to Congress by Secretary Shaw, the
commissioner says that since prepar
ing his estimates for the fiscal yoar,
on October 22 of last year, when $4,-
200,000 was submitted as the amount
required, the volume of business in
the internal revenue service has in
creased so that this amount will not
be sufficient to cover all expenses.
“I am now declining to allow col
lectors to have their typewriters re
paired,” he says In his letter, “‘and
indispensable office expenses are not
possible. I find It virtually impossi
ble to conduct the portion of the
work of the bureau under the collec
tors 'during the next fiscal year for
less than $2,100,000. (
An additional $1,500,000 Is asked
for the expenses of the subordinate
officers, gaugers and storekeepers.

Remedy.
“I can heartily and conscientiously
recommend Chamberlain’s Cough
Remedy for affections of the throat
and lungs,” says Hon. John Shenlck,

ago during a political campaign
I caught cold after being overheated,
which irritated my throat and I was
flnnlly compelled to stop, as I could
not speak aloud. In my extremity a
friend advised me to use Chamber
lain’s Cough Remedy. I took two
doses that afternoon and could not
believe my senses when I found the
next morning the Inflammation had
largely subsided. I took several Jos
es that day, kept right on talking
through the campaign, and I thank
this medicine that I won my seat in
the council." This remedy is for sale
