Cntored ot tho PootoRleo at Valdosta 6a., aa Second Claaa Mall Matter. VALDOSTA, OA.. APRIL 7, 1906 TWELVE PAGES Maybe It would be a stroke of wis dom on the part of the administra tion to call Gen. Wood home to serve a subpeona on Rockefeller. President Roofeevelt holds himself prepared to exhibit specimen blocks of the equare deal to all delegations that visit the White House. Gov. Cummins, of Iowa, has a knack of poltlng the fifth rib of the republican party Just whe n It Is do Ing Its best to look pleasant. Let nobody deceive himself with tho Idea that things will quiet down some day so there will be nothing left for Tom Lawson to write about. If we baj March weather In Jan uary, why should w'e not have Janu ary weather In March and April? Some people are so hard to please. Jf Hoke Smith wanted to know •whether there are any more Georgia brickbats In the place where Clark Howell got the last one. he found out. Supjmse that John D. Rockefeller III roaches man’s estate endowed with the business ability of his grandfather, and then do a little figuring. It Is proposed to make It unlawful for any person In the United States to use the flag for advertising pur poses—unless he Is a member ot congress. Some folks are astonished becaus® a man left $20,000 to a dog. but they do not wink an eyelash when told that some young puppy has inherit ed a fortune. COL. ESTILL’A DENIAL. j Col. J. H. Estlll, candidate governor, has issued the following vigorous statement denying that he Is running In the Interest of Hon. Clark Howell: “To the Democratic voters of Georgia: A report Is being per-., sonally and Industriously clrculat ed In the First, Second and Third.. congressional district*, by Hon... Hoke Smith and his friends that my canvass of the state Is In the Interest of Hon. Clark Howell. I have denied this report in the most positive way wiieneverlt has been brought to my attention, but It Is still being circulated, with the hope, no doubt, that tt will cause my friends to become lukewarm In my behalf. “I take this method of denying it again, and In the most posi tive manner. The Idea that would make such a canvass as I am making In the Interest of an other candidate is preposterous. “I nr making a canvass of the state for the purpose of beating Mr. Howell and Mr. Smith and every ocher candidate for the nomination for governor, anj with the help of God and the vot es of my fellow democrats I hope to be successful. “I am a candidate In my own Interest, not In that of another candidate. My platform, other than the constitution and laws of the state, Is enforcement of the laws the treatment of all peo-* pie and every Interest with Jus tice and fairness. It ask the support apd Influence of all who believe In a square deal for everybody and a business admin istration of the affairs of the state. J. h. Estlll.” It Is hardly necessary for Col.E a till to deny the report which has s< Industriously circulated, dent purpose of prejudicing voters against him. We hav© no special in terest In the matter, except to see fulriu ss done, but we do not object to saying that Col. If the Indianapolis -deadlock be not broken about 1 350,000 men wll 1 be Involved, while lu 1902 the strike was said to have affected 140,000. Then four years ago the operators were not prepared. They had no supply, while this year the surplus stock Is estimated at from 10.000,000 to 15.000.000 tons, while the sales in the average summer months aggre gate 3.000.000 tons. The large Iron plants of Western Pennsylvania have been storing up coal to prepare for such an Industrial disturbance as Is threatened, while t.ie steel trust Is rushing men to Its own mines. In 1902 the financial damage of the strikj was placed at $100,000,000. About $29,000,000 was lost la wages by the miners, while the loss to em ploye* of coal carrying railroads was nearly as great. A repetition ot this loss or an even greater loss this year will have a depressing effect upon business, while the loss to the consumer of coal will be hard to es timate. It may be set down as a fact however, that If the mines are closed that fact will be plainly shown in the Increased price of coal. But these conditions should not affect tile situation If the miners are unjustly treated. While the public will submit to Inconvenience ln the Interest of fair play, there will be a corresponding Indignation if a strike should be precipitated without Jus tification.
