THE WITHDRAWAL OF GRAVES.
It Created Some Interest Among the
Savannah People.
8avannah, Ga., April 20.—The an
nouncement made in the afternoon
papers of the state yesterday that
John Temple Graves had withdrawn
from the race for the United States
Senate excited interest In Savannah,
although it cannot be said that It
caused much surprise.
But little has been beard of Mr.
Graves’ race In this section of the
state. Senator Bacon hae many
friends In Savannah and the flrst
Congressional District and there has
never been any doubt as to how this
district would go In the Senatorial
race. '
There has heen much more Inter
est In the race for governor than In
that for senator. ' *
The fight that the various candi
dates arc ranking In this Congres
sional District has created the keen
est Interest In Savannah. The first
District being his home district It
has been looked upon as certain to
go for Estlll but the frequent vis
its paid It by Messrs. Smith and
Howell Indicate that they are trying
to take It away from him. The coun
ties In the district that do not go for
Estlll will go for Smith.
